Gem Of The Day: "We all have ability.
The difference is how we use it."
~ Stevie Wonder ~
We need either a foster home or an adoptive
home for little Stevie, a five year old Bichon
who is blind, although he doesn't seem to
know this. He has mature cataracts, lens
induced uveitis, and retinal degeneration
in both eyes. He is not a candidate for surgery.
He may be able to see some light and movement.
If you can provide a place for little Stevie
to hang his little hat, please email me at
pup3@aol.com.
Stevie is currently located in San Antonio,
Texas. We can fly him to foster care if you
can provide a foster home.
"My name is Stevie Wonderful. I'm a
very sweet, little (10.5 #'s) boy who is
about 5-6 years old. And, unfortunately,
like my namesake I'm blind. I have cataracts,
but I also have degeneration of my retinas
so removing the cataracts won't help. But
also like my namesake, I don't let it get
me down--I still enjoy life. I was found
as a stray in a big city and spent a week
at the shelter hoping my family would come
get me. That didn't happen, but a nice Small
Paws volunteer came and got me. I spent 2
week at a doggy hospital to make sure that
I didn't have any diseases that I could give
them other pups in my foster home. I bump
into stuff, but I quickly correct my error
and go the other direction. I learned to
go up and down the deck steps into the back
yard. I like going outside even though it
is very hot these days. I get along well
with other dogs and with people.
If you want a sweet,
cuddly ball of fur
to
love you unconditionally,
then I'm the one
for you. Love, Stevie"

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about
the Bichons and the people who love them!
If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.
As you know, we have eight Bichons coming
in from the Chicago IL. area. (Not Indiana
as I told you in the last newsletter. Ignore
me. They don't call me the Geography Queen
for nothing. It's the Illinois Eight. Not
Indiana. Hello. )
They are all Bichons
that were to be euthanized
at various shelters
in the Chicago area.
All were either strays
or owner surrenders.
One should be named "Will Rogers"
as the report of his death was greatly exaggerated
yesterday, thank God.
This group of eight will cost us over $5000.00
in vetting care. One of them is heartworm
positive and he will need treatment.
The Naperville Vet
Clinic gives SPR
a 30%
rescue discount so
you can see how much
it
would have been without
this discount.
So far, about $800.00 has come in for them.
We are being bombarded with "out of
office" replies. So many of us are away
right now.
We have a long way to go to be able to provide
for the care of these eight, who narrowly
escaped assuming room temperature, if you
get my drift.
We have the following
matching donation challenges
for the Illinois
Eight!
These challenges come from IL., N.Y., CA.,
AZ., and WA.!
First, this challenge from Deb Swarze, will be called
"The Kissing Challenge!" I'm hoping
that someone is home who can match this great
challenge! WOW! Feel better Deb!

Hello Robin,
I am the proud parent
of two Small Paws
Rescue
bichons.
I was scheduled to
have knee replacement
surgery on August
24. But (you know what
they say about best
laid plans) on August
19, I was diagnosed
with mononucleosis. I
know that they call
this the kissing disease
but since the only
thing I've been kissing
is my dogs, I think
it might be mis-named.
Also, as a 50 something
person, I thought
I was well past the
age of getting such a
thing. Anyway, my
new knee will have to wait.
I participated in a rescue dog rally in May
on behalf of Small Paws and raised $512.00.
The rally was sponsored by a dog grooming/day-care/boarding
facility in small town Illinois that successfully
raised over $5,000.00 that was divided among
the rescue groups that participated.
I would like to challenge
anyone with a knee
replacement to think
of donating to Small
Paws in honor of
the mobility enjoyed with
their new knee.
Thank you.

And from our friend
Sue Hodges in Southern
California, we have
this challenge for
$100.00.
Thank you again,
Sue! Is there anyone
who
can match Sue?

Some good news at
our house. My two
SPR fluffs
marched in the Multnomah
Days parade! Tia,
who had the first
walk of her life
a mere
6 months ago was
a trooper. The parade
starts
with a doggie parade
(Portland is a VERY
dog friendly place)
and there were dogs
of
all kinds, but of
course Tia and Sachi
were
the most beautiful!
:) We would like
to issue
two $50 challenges
for the fluffs from
the
high kill shelter
in honor of Tia and
Sachi's
accomplishment.
Shelley, Sachi, Tia,
and Benedict (the bunny)>
And from Janet and Beaude and Katie, in Arizona,
we have this challenge for $50.00. Thank
you again Janet

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
