Many of our members are heading out to higher
ground with the approach of Hurricane Irene. One of our members in Virginia told me
that this is billed as "The storm of
a lifetime " the Perfect Storm that
occurs every 100 years."
Please pray for their safety, the safety
of their four legged family members, and
that their homes will be there when they
return. If you are in the path of this storm,
all of Small Paws Rescue is praying for you!
The governors of North Carolina, Virginia,
Maryland, Delaware, New York and New Jersey
declared emergencies to free up resources,
and authorities all the way to New England
urged residents in low-lying areas to gather
supplies and learn the way to a safe location.

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about
the Bichons and the people who love them!
If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.
We have a monster
storm heading for
the east
coast.
Many of our supporters
are busy packing
up
and getting out of
Dodge.
We also have EIGHT Bichons, all from various
kill shelters in the Chicago IL. area, falling
from the skies at the very same time.
Yesterday, we THOUGHT the unthinkable had happened.
We got word yesterday that there was a young,
healthy Bichon in an IL. shelter needing
rescue and not one hour after they told us
about it and asked us to come, we were told
that it had been euthanized along with the
Saint Bernard that came in with it, as owner
surrenders.
We were all just
sick.
First we got this
from Sara Pace, our
Team
Leader for IL. and
IN.
>One of the bichons we won't be getting.
I am just sick, the facility euthed him and
the St. Bernard he came in with. This place
is awful and I am just sick.
Sent via BlackBerry
by AT&T>
Then, we got this from Sara: (Wait for it.
Stay with me now.)
"One of the volunteers at the other
shelter called me to let me know they put
the bichon and St. Bernard down. They were
young. The volunteer is actually a family
practice doc that donates her time. This
facility is not rescue friendly and they
euth all the time. I will be writing the
mayor!"
So I asked Sara Pace to call them and speak
to someone else to
make SURE that he
was
gone. That maybe
there was a mistake. I just had this "feeling" there
was a mistake.
She checked and the family practice human
doc went back down there personally to check.
The good news is that he is alive and we
are getting him! The bad news is that there
are five other Bichons there and that the
Saint Bernard WAS put down. God bless that
Saint Bernard. You know my heart has a place
for St. Bernards. This makes EIGHT Bichons
in line for euthanasia, needing rescue in
the last two days, coming in from the Chicago
area.

Hi Everyone,
I spoke with XXXX, who went to the animal
shelter and the bichon was not put down.
She put a hold on him for us and I am getting
him! The St. Bernard was put down, reason
unknown. XXXX also told me that they have a total of 5
bichons there, that are at risk for being
put down, so we may be pulling all five.
(I spoke to Robin tonight). We also got in
3 today that would have been PTS. (put to
sleep) I am sending pics and estimates for
them in the next emails.
Have a good evening!
Sara>
When we get a Bichon
in from a shelter in
this area, we can
count on a vet bill of
at least $500-600.00
and that's if nothing
else is wrong. This
also includes a 30% discount.
Multiply that times EIGHT and we would be
looking at nearly $5000.00 if we can raise
enough for their vet bills.
But wait. THERE'S MORE. (You don't need some
Ginsu Knives , do ya?)
One of them is heartworm
positive and his
bill will be more.
These are the pictures that we have so far.
Sara is picking five Bichons today and we
will get their pictures to you as soon as
we have them. Many thanks to one of Sara's
helpers, our volunteer, Kathy Macpherson!

From Sara: This is the 1 year old that we
are getting today that is heart worm positive.
He also came in with fly bites. I will get
a name and estimate to you tomorrow.
Sara

Here are the first pics of our new rescues
today. This is Jonnie (cut like a goat!)
Jonnie is estimated to be 4-5 yrs old. He
was an owner surrender, very matted. This
facility neutered, did his rabies and heartworm
test. He will need to be quarantined. His
estimate is $500-600.
Thanks
Sara
This is Gino. He was taken to the shelter
by his owners. I guess the shelter said his
owners said they never wanted him in the
first place. The shelter did neuter, do his
rabies and heartworm test for us. Gino had
fly bites and is HEARTWORM POSITIVE. They would like to start the heartworm treatment
tomorrow. Dr Fitzgerald is also going to do an xray
before starting treatment. Gino's estimate
at this time is $700.00 That is for quarantine,
xray, heartworm treatment, and vaccinations
that he was not given. (the heartworm treatment
and xray is approx $300)
Will keep you posted on his status.
Thanks
Sara>

Robin,
This is Sydnie. She came into rescue last
week. Her estimate was $500.
Sara>
So, while many of our folks are out there
trying to dodge a
massive hurricane, these
little ones haven't
been watching the weather
forecast.
We are looking at over $5000.00 in vet bills
for these eight Bichons.
The "Indiana
Eight" inducted into
rescue during "Irene"
need your
help.
I am here and will issue all matching donation
challenges for these little ones as the rains
come down and the wind begins to moan.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
