We want to let you all know about a sad situation
that has happened in San Antonio, Texas.
Postings are rampant on Facebook, and Internet
message boards, and we wanted you to hear
the true story from us.
A man died, leaving over 30 Bichons and Havanese
inside of his home.
First, you need to know that all of these
dogs are now safe with rescue, as of about
an hour ago.
An Anesthesiologist, living in San Antonio,
passed away at his home a little over two
weeks ago.
He had applied to both foster and to adopt
from Small Paws Rescue, several times, beginning
back in December of 2010.
He was denied every time because at the time he had 24
Bichons living in his home.
He would write and ask for ten Bichons to
foster at a time. :(
While his vet reference was excellent, and
all of his 24 Bichons were spayed, neutered,
and up to date on vaccinations, we felt like
this was way too many dogs to be inside of
one home and we didn't want to add any more
to that number.
Last week we learned that Animal Control
was called to the home after his body was
discovered, and he had been deceased for
a week.:(
Animal Control removed over 30 dogs from
his home.
Our understanding
is that the family has
spoken for five of
these, and signed over
the others over to
Animal Control of San
Antonio.
As per the family's request, Animal Control
has in turn arranged for these dogs to go
to to one of their local rescue partners,
the Animal Welfare Society of Bandera County. (The mother of the deceased owner has a friend
who is a volunteer with this rescue group,
and they have asked that the dogs go to them.)
This is a no-kill rescue and all of these
dogs will be placed locally, which is what
the family has requested and of course we
are going to honor that.
Our Board of Trustees
feels that since these
dogs do have rescue
available to them, that
we need to save our
spots for Bichons who
are about to be euthanized
without us, nationwide.
The Animal Welfare Society of Bandera County is a 501C3 Organization and has been operating
for 16 years.
According to their veterinarian, each of
these Bichons is already spayed/neutered.
current on vaccinations, and current on heartworm
preventative.
We are sending a 3000.00 donation to the Animal Welfare Society of Bandera County
to help support these dogs until they are
adopted.
We have received this from their President,
Sandee Bowman. Sandee was able to visit the
dogs on Tuesday at the shelter, where they
were being kept separately form the general
population. Sandee said they were all safe,
in good condition, and receiving good care
while at the shelter. Sandee has them now.
They were just now picked up and are all
seeing the veterinarian, today.

Please consider having a will that provides for your Bichons in case,
God forbid, something were to happen to you.
Our sincere condolences

In the last two days we have had five Bichons
come into rescue with Small Paws.
These are their pictures and a little about
them.

"Sugar" is heartworm positive,
rescued from the
Edmond OK. shelter.
From Edmond OK. Volunteer,
Randi Rice;
"Robin called me just as I was getting
in from work and I went and got him. His
name is Sugar. He is very quiet and shy.
His fur is badly matted. I took him to a
local groomer but they wouldn't touch him
without shot records. I just got a call from
Mike at the Edmond Shelter and he said he
forgot to give me the dog's registration
papers (he's AKC registered). He is mailing
them to me. They said he was current on rabies,
but from the condition he is in, I have my
doubts. The shelter gave him Bordatella when
he came in. Sugar weighs about eleven pounds.

These two, Ernie and Maggie, were from an
owner surrender in PA, last night.

Hi, Robin, Will you
give the Small Paws Rescue Online E-Store a big announcement next letter, just asking
people to look to
see what is there. I have
lots of requests
to get things in for them,
then there are no
sales. So the new items inventory is great, beautiful and we need customers.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
