You also may have seen us on "Inside Edition" with Deborah Norville!

If you missed our previous newsletter, here it is.

If you would like to share today's newsletter, this is the link!.

I have been waiting to give you an update until we knew for sure that he was going to be alright, and he is!

You remember that he had probably been hit by a car and needed surgery to repair his broken leg.

Three year old "Paddington" was in pain and needed surgery.
This is a short video of him walking, prior to surgery, holding up his broken leg.

When the surgeon got in there, she discovered that the break was probably 5-6 weeks old. Much of the tissue was dead, so she had to amputate the leg.

Then he got an infected scrotum from where they had neutered him and he had to go back to the E.R. for five additional days (and dollars) for IV pain meds.

Now, he is back at the regular vet and doing great!

Do you want to see him run without that broken dead leg in his way?

Click here to see Paddington run!

They tell me he is VERY active and will be great for a family!

Thank you for helping us to help him. His bill hasn't come in yet but we have funds saved back to pay it.

Speaking of funds, as you know August and January are the slowest months for non profits, and we are no different.

August has back to school and college expenses, as well as last minute vacations, and January is when people are paying for the Holidays of December.

We had been doing pretty well until but ten days ago when Bichons just started being hurled at us at the speed of light, IN PAIRS, and no I am not kidding.

I don't want to overwhelm you, so I'll just tell you about a few of them, and we are starting out in the hole as it is.

After we paid our bills last Monday night, Dave Hagadorn told me, "$2,156 not left over."

So we are staring out in the hole. I just do not like the hole.

First from Sara Pace, one of our our Energizer Bunny Team Leaders, we got two more Bichons out from the worst shelter there is, near Chicago, on Monday.

Nikki is an owner surrender to a Chicago shelter. He is 4 years old. Needs the works! ($600-800.00) Is at Naperville Animal Hospital He weighed 14.4 lbs.

Charlotte was a stray that went unclaimed and we pulled her from the same shelter. Super matted but so happy to be free! The shelter estimated her at 3 but will have our vet check . She also needs "the works" and she is also is at NAH. She weighed 10 lbs.

Click here. You HAVE to see Charlotte's freedom ride and her doing the wave to Bon Jovi!

So those two alone will cost us about $1500.00.

Then here in Tulsa, a senior owner was going into a nursing home.

She had two Bichons, both ages 8 years and four months. Siblings.

Well, come to find out, they have several medical issues that are going to run another $1500.00.

They are at the Small Animal Clinic of Tulsa.

Bubba in Tulsa

Sugar in Tulsa

Dr. David Russell says: They are both 8 yrs old. Bubba is overweight, has small cataracts in both eyes and needs some dental extractions. Sugar is overweight, has mature cataracts, KCS in left eye with severe conjunctivitis, several small skin growths, large SQ mass (probable lipoma), and also requires some extractions. Attached are their pics. The dental evaluation, cleaning, x-rays, and lab work will be about $239.00 each. That does not include any extractions. I won’t know how many are needed until we start. That may add another $150-400. The 4 mass removals will add another 500-600 to Sugar's bill.

And then this morning, I got THIS lovely news from him.

"Bubba has an ALP ( liver values) of 1012. I would suggest an ultrasound by Dr. Hodges." (Dr. Hodges is the Internist)

The other one, Sugar, is high too. It’s only 500, but she has been on some steroid eye drops which could elevate it.
"

So, it appears we have rescued a pair of darling little train wrecks, but they are OUR train wrecks now, and we are going to do right by them.

Doing that is going to cost at least $1500.00-$2000.00 depending on how many extractions they have and on what they find on the Ultrasound.

Are you tired yet?

Then, this morning, here in Tulsa, OK., we got in another one.

This precious two year old female has a huge bladder stone and needs surgery as she is urinating blood and as you can tell by her face, she is in pain.

Her name is Cupcake. Her owner is in Florida and has a son with an illness that is causing her to be with him for an extended time in a children's hospital.

She can't care for both little Cupcake and for her child.

A relative brought Cupcake to the clinic this morning.

The estimate for her bladder surgery is for $700-900.00, which includes a 30% rescue discount.

So all in all, to bring us back up to zero, and to pay for just these five new Bichons, we need to raise right at $6056.00.

And there are other Bichons who are owner surrenders and shelter Bichons coming in DAILY since about week ago.

We had a matching challenge that came in later, for Paddington, so I'm going to go ahead and issue it now. I'll issue any others that come in as well.

From Dawn Bove, we have this challenge for $100.00. Is there anyone who can match Dawn? Thank you Dawn!

Hello Robin and Louie: I will match Louie's challenge of $100.00 and make my own challenge of $100.00.
We have to get Paddington's leg fixed asap!
Louie, I am so sorry for your loss. I know she had a wonderful home for her last few months.
Sent with love,
Dawn>

So that's where we are now.

Help is needed. Really. Seriously. Absolutely not kidding.

All My Love, Robin

Thanks for doing this. I try to make everyone aware.
Right now I need a stop drop pray for my Cooper.
I am in Tampa with my granddaughter who is singing in Florida All State Elementary Chorus. Hubby just called and Cooper was attached
In our doorway at 10 as he went out for last walk of night.
Off leash pit bull type ran to our door, latched on and shook him good.
Two women new neighbors couldn't control their dog.
Coopie is at vet sedated. Prayers please.

>When these folks applied to adopt, and we asked how their Bichon was killed by a car, this was their response. We hear this on an average of once a week.

(These are NOT Bichons adopted from Small Paws.)

PLEASE don't take a chance with the life of your Bichon!
We do not adopt to people who allow their dogs to run loose.

We had him for the last five years, He is very obedient normally when we say "stay" he will stop wherever he is, so some times we are used to play with him in the yard for he loves to run around the yard in circles, during that time we did not put him on the leash, this particular day he was not on leash and did not yield to the command when he saw some dog across the road. It took off so suddenly the on coming driver did not have time to stop the car. That is how it happened.>

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
