Gem of the Day: "Dogs do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have and how to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value they have to bequeath except their love and their faith.

~Eugene O'Neill~

FOSTER HOME STILL NEEDED. THIS IS BECOMING URGENT.

Nellie and Hubble are both nine years old. They came in from an owner who lost her home in Harper's Ferry West Virginia. It's about an hour and twenty minutes outside of Washington DC. and about the same from Baltimore MD. We desperately need a foster home for them either within driving distance or we may be able to fly then to you for foster care. Foster help needed!
These are very nice, laid back dogs with no behavioral issues.
They love each other very much.

This has been an upsetting day . Everyone is alive and ok now, but we had a close call this morning.

I'll tell you about it a little further down in the newsletter. It's the reason your support is so crucial.

First we want to give you all an update on the little pair we took in last week, whose owner lost her home and had to surrender Hubble and Nellie to Small Paws. They are littler mates and have been together all of their lives from birth.

Oh dear. This is upsetting to see, but please know that they are both doing well, now. But man, what the physical pain they have had to endure is really hard to grasp.

We knew that Nellie had "bladder issues", but we did NOT know that THIS was lurking inside of her body.

You are looking at a bladder stone that was the size of a LEMON according to the vet. It was the largest one they have ever seen. It was removed yesterday.

This is little Nellie after that rock was removed.

And we knew that Hubble had bad teeth. But we weren't prepared for this.

He only had nine teeth left when we got him. Eight of those were rotten and had to come out. The only tooth he was left with was this one and no I am not kidding. Bless his little heart.

I don't know if you have ever had a toothache, but imagine that times eight.

And imagine carrying a rock the size of your foot in your bladder. That's what Nellie was living with day after day.

So thanks to you we got them in and took care of their pain.

Now, they need a foster home. Extended boarding for two dogs is not going to be financially feasible.

They lost their Mom. They lost their home and everything that was familiar to them.

Now they are living in a cage.

Is there anyone out there who can help them, please?

Next, I need to let you know why YOU are so very important to this rescue effort.

This morning, we got the following owner surrender form.

The owner was going to euthanize his 8 year old Bichon BECAUSE OF A DIVORCE AND THE APPOINTMENT WAS MADE FOR 11:30 A.M. TODAY. HE HAD ALREADY PAID FOR IT OVER THE PHONE!

we have recently separated. the wife took the 2 boy's because they're inseparable. she couldn't take all 3 because the apartment is so small as it is. my apartment allows for the cat. I've been staying at the house the last 2 week's, while moving my stuff slowly to the new place. I feel Hailey still has a couple year's left in her, she's been going on walks every night and really enjoys them. her only problem has been her teeth when we got her. we had her put under at Steamboat animal hospital and they pulled some, but we didn't like how she was and the danger's of the procedure. so we haven't had any more pulled. She's set to be put down this morning, so if someone can help give this girl a reprieve would be wonderful.

Small Paws has 200 Bichons in rescue right now across the country and we are only accepting Bichons that are in danger of being euthanized.

Is this Bichon or Bichon Mix safe for the time being?

no, due to go down this morning

We are trying to save our resources for Bichons that are in danger of being euthanized or of being taken to a kill shelter. Thank you for your understanding. Robin Pressnall Executive Director Small Paws Rescue Inc. <

Carrie Rogers, our Team Leader to the Pacific Northwest was all over this.

I called the vet and said, " DON'T DO IT. WE WILL TAKE THE DOG."

So one of our volunteers is picking this little one up. SHE WAS ALREADY AT THE VET WITH THE APPOINTMENT SET FOR THIS MORNING.

After paying our vet bills on Monday night of this last week, our balance was down to $4066.00.

It is costing us an average of $1218.79 per day for our vet bills across the country. That gave us enough for 3 1/3 days.

It's 3 1/3 days later now.

Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue For The First 24 Days of September, 2012,
Totalling $29, 250.95, An Average of $1,218.79 Per Day.

I don't come to you with every Bichon that comes into rescue.

Your E-mail boxes would be full and you would be as overwhelmed as we are. Trust me on this one.

But they are coming in and they need help.

They can't help the situation they have found themselves in.

Sometimes it's the economy. MANY times it's that the owner has dies or gone into a nursing home.

And sometimes it, I don't even know what to call it, LIKE THE SITUATION ABOVE WITH HAILEY.

I try to put myself in your places.

Would I want to see one more e-mail asking for money from Robin?

Sometimes, I start to write something to you and I just feel like it's asking too much, and I delete. Thinking that better words will come. A better picture will come. A unique and interesting situation will come.

The truth is that by now, after almost 14 1/2 years, there isn't too much we haven't seen.

Most of it involves pain and it all involves money to alleviate it.

We are being painfully aware of who we are able to take in. If we had taken every Bichon that we hear about, we wouldn't have been here to interfere with Hailey's fate and that 11:30 A.M. appointment.

Please don't misunderstand.

I love what I do.

I hate the financial situation we are put in, when it comes to caring for these precious little white lambs, who would never hurt anyone. Whose empathy for us, their caretakers, is oh so evident by just looking into their eyes.

My four, Chipper, Spunky Monkey, Reagan and Pipper, don't have a clue what a vet bill or a dollar is.

And I never want them to know.

I'll gladly take that burden for them, and I know that you would take it for your babies.

Oh man. I'm doing it again, I'm rambling.

I guess I just need to tell you that sometimes, we don't have time to come to you and raise funds before a life is going to be lost.

We just have to do it and pray that funds will come in to support the work we are doing.

We are giving it our all.

Our Board of Trustees is in contact, sometimes, 30 times a day.

We are trying to do the most that we can for the most Bichons that we can.

We need your help.

We also need a foster home for Hubble Snaggletooth and Nellie.

I need you.

All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
