Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to our newest members of our Small Paws® Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who may have seen us on October 24, 2011 on Fox and Friends in New York City, or on Animal Planet on "Dogs 101.", or you may have recently read about us in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness, 101 Stories about Finding Your Purpose, Passion and Joy , or you may have seen us on "Inside Edition" with Deborah Norville.

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, click here to read it.

This is a very difficult newsletter to write.

We want to let you all know about something tragic that has happened in Stamford, CT., that involves three of our Bichons that we placed back in 2003 and 2004.

These three Bichons who were rescued and placed by Small Paws, and a fourth Bichon, "Kiwi" who was adopted from a local shelter, are all safe and sound, as of this morning, in SPR's custody.

These are some of the news stories about the tragic loss of their Mom, Susan Beran, and her mother.

Police confirm IDs in Murder-Suicide

Names of Stamford murder-suicide victims released

Mother-daughter die in murder-suicide

This is indeed a horrific situation and I know it is difficult to read the news stories.

According to news reports, there had been no electricity or utilities at the home for the past year, and it had recently been sold at auction by the city for non- payment of back taxes.

Four Bichons were found at the home.

Jenny, Cassidy and Skipper were all found in their crates and little Kiwi was found down in the basement. All were wearing diapers.

They were taken directly to a veterinary hospital by the Stamford Animal Control.

Due to their Mom's dire financial situation, they had not received veterinary care in several years.

The three boys have all tested positive for Lyme disease, and all four dogs were in extreme need of dentals.

Jenny, was bleeding and needed bladder stone removal surgery.

Upon learning of this terribly sad chain of events, Joanne Raus, our Team Leader for CT., contacted The City of Stamford Animal Control and has been in constant contact with them regarding these little ones.

Thankfully, the four dogs were never taken to the shelter, but instead have been receiving excellent care at a local veterinarian's office.

We felt that we needed to wait until today, to see if relatives were going to claim them or not, before coming to ask you for foster homes and donations for their vet care.

If we were not going to be needed, we wanted to leave this painful, private matter to the family.

But relatives have declined to take these little ones and today was the first day that the dogs were able to be declared the "property" of the City of Stamford so they could then be released to Small Paws Rescue. They were released to us first thing this morning.

See notes about the release from the shelter as well as vet bills to date and estimates for much needed dentals.

This is from Joanne Raus, our Team Leader for CT.

Subject: Susan Beran dog's information and documents

From: joanneraus@hotmail.com
To: pup3@aol.com

Robin,

The City of Stamford released Susan Beran's four Bichons to us this morning at 8:30 a.m. The Animal Control officer, Lori Hollywood was not able to release the dogs prior to this date because of the State of CT. requirements for impounded dogs. She was also awaiting a release from the next of kin. According to the AC officer, the family members refused to sign any release documents and they did not want to take the dogs. Since it was a moot point to contact them any further, she released the dogs to us, knowing they will be well cared for and adopted through their original home, Small Paws Rescue.

I gave her the adoption contracts signed by Susan when she adopted them from Small Paws during 2003 and 2004 showing her signature stating that if anything were to happen she would agree to return the dogs to us. The AC officer asked us to also take another one of the male dogs, "Kiwi" who was not adopted through Small Paws, because he is bonded with one of the other male dogs, Cassidy.
She asked that these two Bichons remain together and not separated.

These are the names of the dogs found at the home. The dogs were all found in their crates with the exception of one who was found in the basement of the home.

Jenny 11 years 1 month
Cassidy 7 years 9 months
Skipper 9 years 9 months
Kiwi 13 years 4 months

The vet bill from the Animal Hospital for all four dogs basic vetting and for Jenny's dental and bladder stone surgery was $1118.00 to date. This sum represents the city bill allowing for a discount of 60% given to the city.

Small Paws paid the current vet bill for the Stamford Ct. Bichons in the amount of $1118.00 today, May 29, 2012.

This doesn't include what they still need in the way of vetting.

The estimate for Dentals for the other three dogs range between $278 and $527.00 per dog, depending on the number of extractions. This includes the rescue discount.

As I mentioned to you earlier, the animal hospital has agreed to extend the same 60% discount, extended to the City of Stamford, for distemper vaccinations, heart worm testing, dentals, etc., to us as what would have been given to the City of Stamford.

The total estimates with a 60% discount for dentals are:

Skipper: between $278 and $527.00 depending on the number of extractions.

Cassidy: between $278 and $527.00 per dog, depending on the number of extractions.

Kiwi: between $322.00-$598.00 depending on the number of extractions.

So the estimate for dentals for the remaining three are for between $878.00 and $1652.00. Today, we paid $1118.00.

Foster or adoptive homes are needed.

Without foster homes, we are going to be paying about $72.00 per night to board all four, at a discounted boarding rate.

They really need to get out of a cage and into a home so they can begin the healing of their broken hearts.

In a perfect world, this horrific thing would never have happened.

In a perfect world, we would be able to keep all four together in a forever home.

I'm praying that someone out there can find it in their heart to adopt all four.

We will pay for air transportation if there is anyone who can give this family of four, a home, together. Online Adoption Application

I know that's asking a lot, but they have lost so much already.

We may not be able to find someone to adopt all four.

If not, we will need foster homes.

We do at the very least need to keep little Cassidy and Kiwi together.

You know how I feel about Bichons being attached to each other. I've seen it for myself, so many times.

I'd like to be able to keep everyone together, but reality is sinking in here.

Jenny is 11 years old. She was first rescued by Small Paws in December of 2003. Jenny was bleeding and had to have bladder stones removed, as well as several teeth pulled.

From the vet's office:
Subject: FW: Jenny's picture
Date: Tue, 29 May 2012 14:49:36 -0400

Jenny is almost 12 years old. She is small at 11 lbs, and is currently taking antibiotics for post surgical urinary issues. She had a cystotomy on Friday, May 18th where numerous bladder stones were removed from her bladder. At the same time, she had a dental cleaning with numerous extractions done. Currently she should be maintained on a specific urinary food to keep her urine pH above 6 to keep her urinary crystals forming stones again.

The stones that were removed from Jenny's bladder.

She still has urination mistakes in cage, but can still have a weird sensation from post surgery but will continue with her antibiotics to keep her bladder infection under control, she should also have her urine rechecked in 2-3 weeks to make sure the bacterial count and crystals are taken care of.

Jenny also has been brought current on her rabies and bordetella vaccine. She gets along well with the 3 boy bichons as well.

"Skipper was "Cool Cat" from the Doo-Wop Babies. He was rescued by Small Paws and placed back in June of 2003.

From the vet's office:Subject: Skipper Bichon
Date: Fri, 25 May 2012 11:26:42 -0400

Skipper is nine and the only one that did not get groomed. Fur in good condition, still a little urine staining on his abdomen. Also in need of a dental cleaning +/- extractions. Has been brought current on Rabies and Bordetella, was given a dose of Comfortis as well for fleas. Also appears to be house broken, but has more cage anxiety than the other 3, is very social as well.

"Cassidy" was first rescued by Small Paws and placed in October of 2004.

From the vet's office: Subject: Cassidy Bichon
Date: Fri, 25 May 2012 11:24:21 -0400

Cassidy is the class clown of the 4, very social and wants to run and play. Appears to be housebroken, and keeps his cage clean. He is the youngest of the 4 at seven years old. Has been brought current on Rabies and Bordetella, recently groomed (very easy to work with). Needs his teeth cleaned sooner than later. Has had a dose of Comfortis for flea treatment. Gets along with all 4, but would do well with Kiwi as a partner.

"Kiwi" before grooming. Kiwi was adopted from a shelter. He didn't come from Small Paws but he is bonded to little Cassidy and he is a part of our family now.

From the vet's office: Subject: Kiwi Bichon
Date: Fri, 25 May 2012 11:00:01 -0400

Kiwi is 13 years old. He is the shyest of the 4, but is very loving. Housebroken and keeps his cage meticulous. Eats Iams Dry crunchies, softened. Up to date on Rabies and Bordetella. Needs Dental cleaning +/- extractions as soon as possible. Very easy to groom as well!

"Kiwi" after grooming.

"Kiwi" is friendly and around 18 lbs.
He is bonded with Cassidy, so they must be fostered or adopted together.

When I first got the news about this, it was late on a Saturday night, May 12.

First I cried. Then I notified our Board of Trustees.

We've never seen anything happen like this in our 14 years.

I began to look through my Outlook account and found that our last correspondence with Susan had been back in 2006.

None of us had any idea that she was living in this nightmare than none of us can even imagine.

Now that the dogs have come back to us, and have not gone to relatives, the one thing we can do for Susan is to take care of her beloved babies. Her Bichons.

I don't know how she even afforded to feed them.

But she did feed them.

I have no doubt that she did her absolute best to take care of them with what very little she had.

If you can help these four little ones with a home, this is an online adoption application.

If you would like to assist with vet bills for these four, instructions are below on how to do that.

Thank you in advance for being there for Jenny, Skipper, Cassidy and Kiwi.

All My Love, Robin

Prayer Reports and Requests

Subject: Prayers for Resi
Date: 5/27/2012 11:17:18 A.M. Central Daylight Time
From: hmorrill2@tampabay.rr.com
To: Pup3@aol.com

Please pray for Resi. He was doing great with the Itherm treatments and we were hopeful that he was well on his way to recovery from the injuries he sustained from the pit bull attack. However, he has injured himself jumping off of the bed before I could get to him. He jumped at an angle and the pain was excruciating. I was so scared for him. He is having orthopedic surgery on the cruciate ligament on Wednesday, which has now torn more. ` Please pray for his surgeon, ,Dr. Scribano, the medical team and for his healing. Also my strength to continue as I am still carrying him most everywhere. His doctor ha assured me that if we do everything he tells us and give him the right kind of after surgery care, he will be good as new again and the old Resi-that is the good news. He is such an extraordinary boy, does such exceptional work in ministry, and so loving, please pray for his total recovery. We are in the process, Resi, Rascal and me of getting credentialed to work with Canines for Christ-we can only do this if God answers are prayers, which I totally believe He will do.

The good news it that his entire episode helped them to put the pieces together to make a clear diagnosis of his problem.

We are forever blessed and forever grateful to God for your friendship!!

Helen and Resi-Rascal too

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
