Gem of the Day: "You Americans need to learn the
difference between inconvenience and catastrophe."
~ As told to me by an Auschwitz concentration
camp survivor when I was 21 years old. I
called into a radio talk show hoping to be
chosen to get to speak to her. I asked her
what advice she had for young people.
Her answer has been
etched in my memory
for
all these years.~

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.
Catastrophe has hit the heartland of our
country.
I would have written to you sooner, but the
tornadoes caused me to be delayed in Chicago
for two days, unable to fly home from the
CT. Bichon Bash and unable to write a newsletter
to you all.
I finally got home late Tuesday evening.
I wanted to give
you this update on
the recent
storms.
I'll send a regular newsletter after this.
Vicious tornadoes
have destroyed lives
and
properties in the
last several days
in both
Joplin MO., and in
central Oklahoma.
We are fine, We are
in the Tulsa area,
which
is in Northeastern
OK.
I am 90 miles from
Joplin, MO.
The tornado that
hit Joplin, MO. went
straight
up the center of
the town, in the
most urban
of areas.
I've spent many hours
in Joplin, MO., as
it is a meeting place
for rescuers, who
are
doing mill rescue
in MO.

Many of you have asked and the storm did
NOT hit the
outskirts of Joplin,
where the commercial
kennels are located.
It hit city neighborhoods, houses, apartments,
churches, and shopping centers. Densely populated
areas.
"Roughly 1,500
people have been
reported
missing in Joplin,
Missouri, following
Sunday’s
deadly tornado, a
fire department official
said Tuesday. The
city of Joplin has
about
49,000 inhabitants.
While the number
of missing
is alarming, it is
possible that some
of
them survived or
fled ahead of the
tornado,
but have been unable
to notify authorities.
On Monday, rescuers
pulled seven people
out
of buildings that
had collapsed, but
no additional
survivors had been
found on Tuesday.
At least
122 people have been
confirmed dead following
the country’s deadliest
tornado in 60 years.
The tornado, which
cut a three-quarter-mile-wide
path through the
town, also injured
500 people
and damaged 30 percent
of the town’s buildings.
Read it at The New
York Times "
Many pets are missing
as well.
Please pray for the people of Joplin, MO.
and for their animals.
The Joplin animal shelter knows SPR well
and will call us if there are any Bichonly
dogs in need of rescue.
The Joplin animal shelter was not in the
path of the storm, thank God. It is located
on the north side of town, not in the center.
The storms that hit Oklahoma were in the
central part. Nine lives were lost and a
three year old little boy is still missing.
Tuesday night, our Bichons, Chipper, Spunky
Monkey, Reagan and I went into our safe room,
located in our garage which is located in
a basement.
Dale and Sally Ann
Pressnall, chose
to stand
outside on the deck,
"watching".
Watching what I ask? STEP AWAY FROM THE DECK
AND INTO THE SAFE ROOM NOW.
Men. They can't help it. They were born this
way.
They have to see
it coming before
THEY are
going to take cover.
They have to hear
THEIR name called
by the
weathermen on TV
before they think
the warning
is meant for THEM.
It was a good dry run for the boys and I
since we now have a third Bichon, Reagan.
I tried to make it a game for them, but the
Monkey Man 'TWEREN'T buying it.
Remember, Spunky Monkey was tied outside
to a boat, in a driveway in Joplin MO, when
he was 8 months old. His former owner abandoned
him and moved away. Neighbors fed him until
they took him to the shelter, where SPR rescued
him 11 years ago. He REMEMBERS storms and
being outside, living though them.
If you are ever needing to evacuate in case
of a tornado, GET LEASHES ON YOUR DOGS IN
CASE YOU HAVE TO PULL THEM WITH YOU TO SAFETY.
You may THINK your
dog would never leave
your side and that
they would always
follow
you.
Not so.
Barometric drops in pressure, and the loud
sounds of a freight train that come with
tornadoes, can cause an otherwise obedient
dog to lose their ability to think normally
and to follow you.
Keep a leash on them
and keep it attached
to you.
Have a bag ready
to go with their
vet records
and medications,
first aid kit, their
food
and bottled water
in case the unthinkable
happens, as it did
to thousands over
the
past few days.
I wanted to give
you an update of these horrible
storms, since they
are so close to our home
office of Tulsa,
Oklahoma.
Thank you for being
concerned about us.
We are fine but so
many are not.

If you want to help
the animals, this

APSCA Mounts Temporary
Shelter in Devastated
Joplin.
Ok, that's the latest info that we have on
the storms.
All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
