Gem of the Day: "Hope means believing in spite of the evidence,
and then watching the evidence change."
~Jim Wallis ~
(From the "Speaking of Faith" interview, Nov. 29, 2007)

Small Pawser, Kathy Fritz, and 9 year old "Lady".
She was rescued from a certain death in a shelter in Florida.
(Lady, not Kathy)

I imagine Lady was left at the shelter because she has this golf ball sized mass on her hip/leg area. The vet wants to remove it and to biopsy it.
It is NOT a lipoma. (fatty tumor)
It is hard and immovable.
Help is needed and soon, if we are to save this little girl.

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.

Ok. Here's the deal.

We have Bichons dropping from the skies, needing surgeries AND needing foster homes, and the record high vet bills for the month of May, are starting to take their toll, as we try to keep Bichons from being killed in shelters across the country.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue in May of 2011 totalling $31, 089.95 for the first 16 days of May, which is an average of $1, 943.12 per day.S

This is also short week for me as I will be flying on Friday, to Derby CT., thanks to Small Pawser, Terri Irwin, for the CT. Small Paws Rescue Bichon Bash, which takes place this Saturday.

We still have space and meals available at the CT. Bash, so let me know if you would like to come and join us at Osborne State Park, with your Bichons or with your honorary Bichons!

You don't even need to have a Bichon to join us. Come. We will find a Bichon for you!

After paying our vet bills last night, we were left with a balance of only $589.00 left over.

I feel like the meter is running in NYC and I just learned that don't have my wallet with me.

And when I told the cab driver this lovely news, the meter just started spinning faster.

We have already postponed this surgery once, and folks, this tumor is growing.

Lady's foster mom, Kathy Fritz, at cfritz3@tampabay.rr.com, has offered a $100.00 matching challenge for this little girl, whom she saved from death at a Florida shelter.

Is there anyone who can match Kathy?

The estimate to vet Lady, to remove the mass and to do a much needed dental, at the Polk County Animal Hospital is for between $709.05 and $983.00.

We do NOT have funds at this time to do this surgery and time is of the essence.

At this writing, this is still a condition that we can try to treat by removing this mass and by getting good margins.

I don't remember a single May, in our 13 year history, with vet bills this high.

Then, if that isn't enough, we have at least four Bichons needing foster homes.

How to Become a Much Needed Small Paws® Rescue Foster Parent!

Let us know if you can foster one of these Bichons, and we will try to raise air fare for them, to be able to fly them to you if you aren't in driving distance.

When responding about fostering, please respond to Small Pawser Susie Harbor, at slharbur@iowatelecom.net.

Susie is keeping our list of available foster homes and of Bichons who need a place to hang their little hats while permanent and forever homes can be found.

In Sara Pace's Team in IL, we have these two needing foster care.

Meet Sara Pace, Small Paws Rescue Team Leader for IL. and IN.

"Ziggy" is small. He is 3 yrs old and weighs 8 lbs.
Someone chopped off his tail!
(This is just wrong on so many levels.)

Sara Says: "Here is the other rescue that is coming in today. He was turned in to Anti-cruelty and is at risk of being euthanized because of his age. He is 8 yrs old. Very sweet boy. Passed the temperament test. They did do his vaccinations for us. He will need dental, quarantine, lab work and grooming.
Estimated cost $550.00-$600.00 "

Then, We need two foster homes for Ziggy and Angie. We rescued both from IL. kill shelters where they were about to be euthanized due to a lack of space.

They are sweet and slowly coming out of their shells. Linda and Bob have been spending time with them while quarantined at the animal hospital.

Angie is 5 yrs old and weighs 11 lbs.

They are both from puppy mills, so they will need a fenced in yard and a socialized dog in residence.

Both will be ready Friday and need foster homes desperately."

And we still have this matching donation challenge for $1000.00 that has thus far gone un-met.

Is anyone out there just waiting for a challenge to meet?

I know I sound stressed.

Dale just told me I look stressed.

Gee, thanks, I needed that.,

I only know what I know.

They can't come to you for help.

I believe that you all want us to keep helping them, even if they are older or even if they have tumors.

They can't help it that a human being left them in this condition, on their own, as it were.

It may be that the reasons were beyond their owner's control.

If something happened to you, and your Bichon were to end up in a facility where they would lose their life without rescue, wouldn't you pray that someone who loves Bichons would come through for them?

They are Bichons, so they are family.

All I know to do is to come and show you their pictures, to tell you their stories, and to ask you, if there is anyone out there who can help them?

I will issue all matching challenges for these Bichons in need.

Thanks for listening to the blonde woman from Oklahoma, yet again, All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
