Gem of the Day: "The fidelity of a dog
is a precious gift demanding no less binding
moral responsibilities than the friendship
of a human being. The bond with a dog is
as lasting as the ties of this earth can
ever be."

After paying our vet bills this past Monday
night we were left with only enough to operate
less than one day, which means we are out
of funds and we need your help to keep going.

We have had several emergency room visits
and emergency surgeries and emergency procedures
happening as of late.
These things run
in spurts and it is spurting
down on us, as I
type.
First, we have an emergency situation with
little 11 year old Cuddles.

No wonder she has this look on her little
face.
She was in pain when
this was taken!
11 year old Cuddles,
was abandoned at
a vet's
office near Kansas
City. We transported
her
to Wichita KS., on
Friday and on Monday,
she was at the vets
office for a bladder
full of stones. Cost
for bladder stone
removal
surgery is $600.00.
HELP.
9 year old Sparkles, came into rescue with
Cuddles. They are
a bonded pair and have
been for the last
nine years.
Then, last Saturday, 15 year old "Whisper"
had to go to the
ER in South Texas.
They sent him home with pain pills and an
appointment with his regular vet.
The regular vet wanted
to do an abdominal
ultrasound.
The combined total
for the Saturday evening
ER and the Monday
ultrasound is about $600.00.
This may be an end of life issue but we don't
make that decision until the vet tells us
that it is recommended.
They need this test
to tell us if it
is time
or not.

Lucy
Then, in Ohio, we took in a little seven
year old female, Lucy, who was sick and having
seizures at a shelter. They were going to
euthanize her this morning.
We got this from another rescuer who told
us about the situation.
"I was just
at the Shelter and talked
with XXXX, who works
there in the office.
She said someone
was interested in #266 but
she hasn't heard
back from them. She also
told me the dog had
a seizure this morning.
Would you still want
the dog if no one is
pulling it? It may
be the stress of the shelter
causing the seizure.
Let me know ASAP, as
I don't want them
to euthanize it if we can
save it."
So we have Lucy at the vets office. Blood
work revealed a very high white count. They
believe a raging infection is what was causing
the seizures.
They have her on
IV antibiotics. Just
through
last night the bill
was at $200.00.
It, like the mighty Mississippi river, is
expected to go higher.
Then, we have gotten the five mill dogs from
the shelter in MO, to our vet's office in
Illinois, thanks to the Team Leaders from
both states, Deb Fahey, and Sara Pace.
MANY thanks to Bob James for driving to get
them all and for getting them to our vet's
office. Thank you Bob!
Here they are. They
are beautiful.

Cookie 3 yrs old, 14 lbs.

Benji 6 yrs old 12 lbs

Ziggy 3 yrs and 8 lbs

Jiffy 3 yrs and 16 lbs

Angie 5 yrs and 11 lbs.

Hi Robin,
Here are the Missouri five! Thank you to
Bob James who made the 6 hour plus round
trip to get them and Linda Dunmoyer, who
got them set up with her vet in Yorktown,IN.
Her vet is wonderful. I spoke with him today.
They will give a 25% discount. All the fluffs
were neutered and had some of their shots.
He will complete what is needed and quarantine
them. The estimated cost for each is around
$350.00. Sara Pace>
So that's where we
are. Help is needed for
these unexpected
emergencies. I guess that's
why they call them
"emergencies."
I will issue matching challenges as they
come in.
This is most urgent.
Lastly, many thanks from Dale and I, to so
many of you who wrote with congratulations
about our newest family member, Reagan Pressnall.

We are delighted to have this little "Mash
Burger" join our family.
All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.

Every time I see
Humphrey's picture,
I think
of this -
I have it framed
and hanging in my office
here at home now;
a very very dear friend
gave it to me when
I took over the shelter
here 25+ years ago
- and it hung in the hall
at the new shelter
since 1991 when we moved
into the new building
- been reframed a couple
of times, and looks
a little the worse for
wear - but I still
treasure it. Kathryn Smith,

Carolinas

I gain the grace

That I was God, might
see
Me face to face."
