Wednesday Evening March 30, 2011
Gem of the Day: "We are so thankful to those of you
who have been able to help. It has been really
slow raising funds for these two little ones.
I don't know if it's because it's the end
of the month or what. So far, we have raised
only a third of what is needed for the two
surgeries, for Munchkin and Macy.
We truly need help here, folks. I woke up
at 3:00 A.M. staring at the ceiling and tried
counting Bichons to get back to sleep.
All I could count
was mounting vet
bills.
I'm truly concerned here.
If you can't help, we really do understand
that.
Please pray there is someone who can help.
~ Robin ~

"Macy" will be our 77th Heart Murmur
Surgery
7 month old "Macy" has a grade
SIX out of a possible SIX heart murmur.
Discounted cost to repair her heart murmur will run right at $2000.00 at MedVet in
Worthington, Ohio, if we can get her there
and raise funds for her.
World renown cardiologist, Dr. Thaibinh Nguyenba, would be doing her surgery.

Munchkin.
Three year old "Munchkin"
has both
a torn ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) AND a Grade 5 out of 5 Luxating Patella. He is in pain. He needs surgery in OKC ,
where he is being fostered. The surgery would
be done by Dr. Skip Tangner at the Veterinary Surgical Center in OKC, as soon as we can raise the funding.
Discounted cost of
torn ACL surgery,
which
is the most crucial
of his two surgeries
and is the one needing
to be done first,
is $1087.00.

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about
the Bichons and the people who love them!
If you missed our last newsletter, here it
is.
I can tell you this.
You know me.
Some of you have
seen me in my nightgown
and robe. You know
me. I can tell you
this.
Sometimes I don't
think I can do this
even
one more time.
Come and ask you
for money, yet again.
It's the one part
of my job that just
isn't
my favorite.
I feel like you all must think, "Oh
no. Here she is again. Good Grief. Does she
ever do anything but ask for money?"
That's probably what
I would think if
I were
you.
We really do try so hard to cut every cost
we can.
I argue with vets all day. Ask my husband.
Ha.
He'll walk in to see me saying, "yes,
I know you are about to close. He wants HOW
MUCH for WHAT? No no. That's higher than
anyone has ever charged us. These are rescue
dogs. Yes, that sounds much better and yes,
we can swing that. THANK YOU. Please thank
that DOG-tor and hug his neck for me."
(I assume they don't want a strange blonde
woman from Oklahoma coming in and hugging
any necks in person.)
I can do THAT in
my sleep.
Dale says that sometimes
I DO that in my
sleep. Argue with
vets over costs.
I always ask him
if I won or not.
THAT I can do in my sleep.
It's coming to you
all and trying to
think
of something more
clever. Something
more
touching. Something
more moving.
The reality is that
I'm just me.
I'm not any more
clever than the average
bear, and I'm praying
these messages aren't
ending up in the
recycle bin.
I should have written
to you early this
morning.
But the response was so slow after the first
newsletter I guess I didn't want to bother
you so soon.
So I worked on updating The Heart Murmur Bichons web page.
Wow. Macy will be our 77th Heart Murmur survivor.
I looked at the pictures of the others, and
I remembered each one.
I remember the six
who didn't make it. Some
of those I held in
my arms.
Baby Stetson was one of those. He was so
tiny and so sick that I wanted him to have
a BIG name.

"Stetson"
Dale and I stopped, dropped and ran down
to Texas A&M
on a Thanksgiving weekend.
We'd stop so I could
find Internet access
so I could try to
raise funds for him,
Then we'd drive some
more.
They had to try to stabilize him over the
weekend and would do surgery on the following
Monday morning.
We were really new
at this back then.
He weighed less than
a pound.
I was driving back from MO. the next Monday
around noon, when the call came in on my
cell phone that he had died on the table.
I remember stopping at a Drury Inn in Joplin,
MO. to set up the laptop and through my tears,
I came to tell you all that Baby Stetson
was in heaven now.
We have come so far
with our Heart Murmur
program.
No one has done more
heart murmur repairs
for their breed,
anywhere in the world.
I am so very proud of the work we have done
in this area of repairing congenital defects,
these dreaded heart murmurs caused by poor
breeding practices, usually in commercial
kennels.
I guess I'm a little weepy remembering all
of the Bichons we have saved, and the lives
of the human beings that have been touched
by these Bichons, for almost 13 years now.
When fundraising is going through a slow
patch, it's just hard.
Knowing they are sick or in pain and knowing
we need to raise funds for them, well, this
is the challenging part of rescue work that
hundreds of rescuers do each and every day.
We do have three new matching challenge donations
for Munchkin and Macy.
I'm here and I will
issue all matching
challenges
if they come in for
these two, our two
recent,
greatest needs.

"Macy"
will be our 76th
Heart Murmur
Surgery
She has a grade 6 out of a possible 6 heart
murmur. This means it can be heard without
the aid of a stethoscope. The discounted
cost to repair her heart murmur will run right at $2000.00 at MedVet in
Worthington, Ohio.
Dr. Thaibinh Nguyenba, would be doing her surgery.

Ok. We have this matching challenge from
our friend Sue Hodges in Southern California
for $100.00. Is there anyone who can match
her? If so, that gets us $200.00 closer to
our goal. Thank you again Sue!

Hi Robin,
On April 20th our Hannah will be 16. So,
Dennis and I would like to issue a matching
challenge for $100.00 as her birthday wish.
Thank you,

And we have this
challenge from the adoptive
Mom of one of our
first heart murmur kidlets,
a darling Bichon
named "Bungee".

Dear Robin,
Please send out a
$25 challenge each
on both
Macy (who should
be called Miracle
for still
being alive) and
Munchkin. I'm sure
you'll
have much bigger
challenges but it's
the
best I can do right
now. Bungee is coming
along with his ACL
repair and is in
the second
week of rehab (water
treadmill and cold
laser
treatment plus some
stuff called Ligaplex
on top of all the
other stuff he gets
to
take). He's happier
today than he was
a month
ago and the rehab
is helping. Thanks
so much
for letting me know
about the cold laser.
Love you, S
Well, I guess that's about it. I'm praying.
I'm asking you to pray too. Funds are out
there. There are people who want to help.
I just know it.
We just need to let
them know how very real
this need is, at
this time.
I may not be a clever
bear, but I'm persistent.
I have to be for
them,
All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
