If you missed our last newsletter, here it is
This is as serious of a newsletter as I've
ever written in the last thirteen years.
I've been asking God to give our Board the
strength to make hard decisions, in order
to preserve the organization as a whole.
Last night, I spoke
with our Board of
Trustees
by phone, and with
Vicki Furstenburg,
one
of our North Texas
Team Leaders, and
with
Sindy Parsons, one
of our South Texas
Team
Leaders.
Dr. Cindy Leigh,
the other North Texas
Team
Leader is one of
our Board members,
and I
had already spoken
to her earlier in
the
evening.
Christina Waterman, our other South Texas
Team Leader, is out for a while due to the
sudden loss of a relative, whose funeral
is today. Please keep her in your prayers.
The problem I'm about to share with has been
heavy on the minds of our board members,
for weeks now.
We are all in 100% agreement that without
immediate help, this decision needs to be
made, but we are also in 100% agreement that
it is breaking our hearts.
We have 19 Bichons in the large state of
Texas, both north and south Texas, who are
either currently waiting for foster homes
now or will be in the next few days,
I've tried and I can't seem to raise funds
for even three of them to have treatment
for heartworms and they are hard positives.
The cost for Heartworm Treatment, just for
these three, is $1500.00.
I don't even know what else to do for those
three Bichons.
The other 16 are either being vetted or in
quarantine, sometimes at the rate of up to
$24.00 per night.
WE SIMPLY CAN'T CONTINUE
TO TAKE BICHONS
IN, IN TEXAS, WITHOUT
PLACES FOR THEM TO
GO.
We have many volunteers listed, who for one
reason or another, aren't able to help foster.
I understand that. Really I do.
It's summer and there are lots of things
going on for people to be doing.
Vacations, ball games, golf.
Of course we understand that and that people
need to have time with their families.
Summer is also the time we are being slammed
hard with Bichons on the euthanasia list,
all throughout Texas and other parts of the
country, and folks, WE HAVE NO WHERE FOR
THEM TO GO.
Our vets give us only a certain number of
spaces for rescue. They are full.
Paying boarding takes away from the amount
of funds we can spend on actual vetting.
This morning, there is a little two year
old female who was found hiding under a car.
Her time is up today and she is on the list
to be euthanized at the shelter TODAY.
If we take "Emma", that makes 20
with no place to go and that makes nights
when we are lying in bed, counting Bichons
instead of sheep.
You know me by now.
You know that I will do anything and everything
in my power to save the lives of Bichons
who are about to be killed in a shelter,
usually not due to dog issues, but because
of "people" issues.
It's summer. The move is on for people to
move and to abandon Bichons and other dogs
that have given love and comfort for 10 years
or more.
I know that some people think, "Leave
them at the shelter. Small Paws will take
the Bichons because they always have."
I know this because
they have told me
this.
We can't take in
more Bichons in Texas until
we have places for
the ones we have now.
I'm putting together some pictures and bios
to tell you about the Bichons we have now,
a few at a time over the next few newsletters.
If we fly these dogs to other foster homes
in other states, we will still need funds
to do that.
It runs an average
of $220.00 per dog to
fly one.
Times 20, and you
can see the problem.
After we paid our last vet bills, last Monday
night, our bookkeeper Dave Hagadorn told
me this balance:
"-$3,772 not
left over."
We have raised $1150.00
since then, which
is not keeping up
with what it costs to operate
for even a day.
We are still -$2720.00
in the red.
We are going to have
to be on hold in Texas,
while we try with
everything we have to move
some of the dogs
we already have now, in
Texas, into foster
care.
We have got to find a way to have more foster
homes.
If you are in Texas
and can offer to help
with fostering one
of these dogs please let
please let Susan Harbor know at slharbur@iowatelecom.net.
She is keeping track
of dogs needing foster
care and of you who
are willing to take one
of these precious
lives into your home.
Was your adopted
dog from a shelter?
If so, please think about giving life to
another one just like yours.
If you are not in
Texas and can take in a
foster dog, please
let Susie know.

Foster Parent!
If you can help with
an airfare, please let
me know.
We need help to be
able to save lives.
I think so many folks have thought that others
will step up, so they aren't needed.
This couldn't be
farther from the
truth.
We need you. They
need you.
Please pray for the shelter dogs in Texas,
and for the Team Leaders who are exhausted
and don't know where to turn next.
This is critical.
Thanks for reading this. You can probably
tell I'm beside myself over this.
This is hard for everyone, I know.
All My Love, Robin

Two year old Gucci needs either a permanent
home or another foster home.
He is currently in South Texas. He was brought
into the shelter with a broken back and leg.
He is all well, now.

Cooper is about 2 years old. He finished
his heartworm treatment at the end of April.
Our vet wants to wait 3 months after treatment
before he is neutered, because his heartworms
were so bad. He wears a Belly Band, and most
of time it is not used. He is in San Antonio.

12 year old Samson is heartworm positive.

Two year old Zeke is heartworm positive.
He was found as a stray and was rescued from
a shelter.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue for
the last week of May and the first 20 days
of June of 2011, totalling $33, 739.51.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
