Gem of the Day: "Old dogs care about you even when you make
mistakes."
Tom T. Hall

Kodi is almost 14 years old and is being
surrendered by his owner in Pearland TX.
Kodi is in pain from needing rotten teeth
pulled. We need a foster home for him, as
well as around $1000.00 to remove two benign
tumors and to do his dental with several
extractions. See his story below.
He is about to lose the only home he has
ever had.

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is
Guys, I'm just going to tell you all about
it.
Sometimes, I just
need to come and
tell you
all about it.
This is a hard day.
I just gave the euthanasia order for our
little Baby Colby, in AZ., who has been fighting
distemper.
Baby Colby
Derek Phelps, our Team Leader, called a while
ago and said Baby
Colby was going downhill.
I called the vet
and Spoke to Dr. Florez.
Out precious Baby
Colby was showing
neurological
signs from the distemper.
He began biting the
air this morning,
then
turned aggressive
this afternoon, trying
to bite the staff.
He didn't even know
what
he was doing.
Dr. Florez told me
that after it goes
to
the neurological
system, euthanasia
is pretty certain,
it's just a matter
of
when.
Baby Colby started vomiting today, and his
white count was dropping.
He recommended euthanasia and said if Colby
was his, that's what he would do.
I gave the order
to let him go on
Home to
God.
I am so very sorry. My heart is hurting as
I know yours will be, but I didn't want to
not tell you.
God Speed baby Colby. You were loved by thousands
and I know that you are ok now, in the arms
of Love.
We do have some good news.
The good news is that little Miracle, is
coming home this weekend after successfully
fighting distemper.

Click here to see pictures of her injuries,
after Miracle was seen being thrown from
a car, by a Good Samaritan, who took her
to the animal shelter. They would not release
her to us for medical treatment until their
stray hold days were up.
Today is just a hard day.
We got a report of
an abuse case with a picture
of what appears to
be a dead dog, possibly
a Bichon.
I am all over it and can't seem to get any
info from this small Oklahoma town's Sheriff's
office.
I have some folks,
(lawyers, Animal Alliances)
who are assisting
me in trying to get information,
but I may need to
drive down there and show
up in person, in
order to find out what in
the world is going
on right here in my home
state.
Then, as if all of that wasn't enough, we
got this owner surrender ( see below) for
for a Bichon who is almost 14 years old.
This is in Pearland
TX., South Texas.
We need both someone
to foster him and we
need to raise funds
to get his vet care.
Is there anyone in the area of South Texas
who can foster this poor little guy?
I called the owner
and there is no way
for
her to keep him.
He is in pain from
needing
several rotten teeth
pulled.

Your City and State?:
Pearland, Texas
Name of Bichon/BichonMix

Kodiak (Kodi for
short)
Is this dog a Bichon
or Bichon Mix?: Yes
Dog's age:: 13
Sex of dog:: Male
Has this dog been
Spayed or Neutered?:
Yes
Can you tell us why
this dogs needs to
be
rehomed?: We took
him to the vet to
get some
cysts checked out
and ended up finding
out
that his teeth are
in bad shape. He
needs
to have them cleaned
and have several
of
them extracted. We
were able to get
the cysts
biopsied and they
are benign, but the
vet
recommends having
them removed anyway.
The
quote for all of
this was about $1,000.
We
just simply do not
have the money for
this.
We have tried to
save up the money
over the
past several months,
but haven't been
able
to do so. We have
looked into CARE
credit
and we simply can't
take on another bill
or credit card right
now. My husband and
I have a 2 year old
daughter and we are
currently
having to live with
my parents to make
ends
meet as it is. Since
we can't pay for
the
procedures it is
in Kodi's best interest
for us to try and
find someone who
can help
him out. He's a great
dog and I have had
him since I was 15,
so this is really
the
last thing I ever
wanted to have happen
but
that's the situation
nonetheless.
Your phone number
and the best times
to reach
you?: XXXXX
I am home with my
daughter during the
day
so you can reach
me anytime. However,
she
is only 2 so I may
not be able to get
to
the phone right away,
but just leave a
message
and I will get back
to you ASAP.
Your relationship
to the dog?: Owner
Housetrained?: Yes
Has this dog ever
bitten?: No
Is this Bichon good
with children?: Yes
I Since I cannot
afford his medical
treatment
I am trying to get
him placed in a rescue
rather than having
to take him to the
Humane
Society. They Humane
Society will not
guarantee
that he will not
be euthanized, so
I am really
trying to get him
into a rescue to
avoid
that. If I can't
get him into a rescue
then
I really don't have
any other choice
then
to take him to the
shelter.>
So we have this little one in pain and in
need of medical care.
It's just been a
hard day.
It's hard to raise funds for older dogs but
I am here to try.
I love my 13 1/2
year old Chipper and my
12 1/2 year old Spunky
Monkey with all of
my heart.
I pray God allows me to be able to take care
of them for as long as he lets me have them.
Each precious day
with them is a gift from
God.
I love them so very
much.
And this little guy
loves his Mom too.
She just can't help him right now.
We are really his
only hope.
I just needed to come and tell you all about
it.
All My Love, Robin

Old Dogs and Children
and Watermelon Wine.
Lyrics by Tom T.
Hall
How old do you think I am? he said.
I said, well, I didn't
know.
He said, I turned
65 about 11 months
ago.
I was sittin in Miami
pourin blended whiskey
down
When this old gray
black gentleman was
cleanin
up the lounge
There wasn't anyone around 'cept this old
man and me
The guy who ran the bar was watchin Ironsides
on tv
Uninvited, he sat
down and opened up
his
mind
On old dogs and children
and watermelon wine
"Ever had a drink of watermelon wine?"
he asked
He told me all about
it, though I didn't
answer back
Ain't but three things in this world that's
worth a solitary dime,
But old dogs and
children and watermelon
wine.
He said, women think about they-selves, when
menfolk ain't around.
And friends are hard
to find when they
discover
that you're down.
He said, I tried
it all when I was
young
and in my natural
prime;
Now it's old dogs
and children and
watermelon
wine.
Old dogs care about you even when you make
mistakes;
God bless little
children while they're
still
too young to hate.
When he moved away
I found my pen and
copied
down that line
Bout old dogs and
children and watermelon
wine.
I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that
next day
As I left for my
room I saw him pickin
up
my change
That night I dreamed
in peaceful sleep
of
shady summertime
Of old dogs and children
and watermelon wine.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
