Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to our newest members of our Small Paws® Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who have seen us on Fox and Friends in New York City, or on Animal Planet on "Dogs 101."

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is

Folks, many of you must still be out as we are still getting many "Away from the office" replies.

Hello?? ((Robin turns laptop upside down and shakes it)) Is anyone out there? Hello?? Earth to Small Paws. Respond Small Paws!

We have all sorts of emergencies happening right now.

Bichons needing surgery, Bichons who had to go to the ER on Thanksgiving Day, Bichons with bladder stones, Bichons needing allergy testing, you name it we have it.

And we desperately need help soon if we are going to be able to continue to take in Bichons in need.

As you know, we started out LAST Monday night, after paying our vet bills, with only $885 .00 left over.

It's costing us an average of $1308.00 for medical bills.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws® Rescue in
November of 2010 totalling $28, 783.57
This is for the first 22 days of November,
which is an average of $1,308.34 per day.

We are the LAST RESORT for Bichons that we take in.

How do we know?

When people want to surrender bichons for reasons of "I'm moving to a new home and don't want the dog on the new wood floor." or "The dog needs someone with more time to spend", we send them a letter with other resources available, letting them know that if it becomes a situation where their dog is in danger of being euthanized, we will take the dog.

If an owner is ill, or is going into a nursing home and can't take care of the Bichon anymore, we take them.

If the Bichon is ill and the owner has tried to find financial help and they are at the point of having to make a decision about euthanasia, we take them.

If a good samaritan finds a Bichon and the owner can't be found, we take them,

We aren't out there taking in every Bichon from every shelter and owner as we once were able to do.

We have had to become selective in who we are able to take in, due to the tremendous rise in owner surrenders and shelter Bichons.

If a dog is in a shelter and safe, we leave them to be adopted with the info that if they become ill to call us and we will come immediately.

We are only taking in shelter dogs whose time is up.

I just wanted you to know this so that you know that we are trying to triage, to take in only the Bichons in real danger of assuming room temperature, and to stretch every penny that comes in for their medical bills.

And of course if one of the Bichons that we placed needs to come back into rescue for any reason, for the rest of their lives, we take those back.

And if any of you know me, you know I will fight tooth and toenail with a vet or an ER in order to get the prices down, to eliminate non-essential testing procedures, (And yes, over the years I've learned what is and what isn't needed in many of these cases.) and to beg for a rescue discount, etc.

I never dreamed I would grow up to be a professional begger, but when it comes to these precious Bichons, who are helpless without us, I guess, beg, I will.

Right now, it is not looking good for Chester's eye surgery which the eye surgeon fells is urgent and needs to be done now in order to keep the retinae from detaching. This is painful and we really need to do this surgery for this baby. He is only three years old.

Robin –

Here is a photo of Chester. Dr. Gwin checked his eyes and found a mature cataract in the right eye and an immature cataract in the left eye. His recommendation is to leave the left eye alone for now because it may take months to years for that one to develop fully. But he recommends immediate surgery on the right eye since these little Bichons are prone to retinal detachment. His estimate for the surgery (Including a nice discount) is $1,900. This includes the surgery and 3 months of post-op visits. I went ahead and scheduled him for surgery in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, 11/30 with a follow-up in Tulsa the next day, 12/1. These appointments may be cancelled or changed depending on what you advise. At this point, I’m planning to take him to OKC and will keep him at my house

We have this matching donation challenge from our friend Sue Hodges. This is the first Holiday season she is without her husband, who passed away recently after a very brief illness.

And yet, she still thinks about these Bichons in need. Thank you Sue, again. I hope there is someone who can match your challenge!

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
