Gem of the Day:
"This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult
days,
Smiles when sadness intrudes, Rainbows to
follow the clouds,
Laughter to kiss your lips, Sunsets to warm
your heart,
Hugs when spirits sag, Beauty for your eyes
to see,
Friendships to brighten your being, Faith
so that you can believe,
Confidence for when you doubt, Courage to
know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth, Love to complete
your life."

Lastly, I want to share a bittersweet story
with you.
This is from Cate
Cross, one of our
volunteers
in Northern California.
Cate, we are so very sorry to hear about
your Mom, but so happy that little Ross could
help her.
Aren't you glad that
God made Bichons?

Editor's Note: Bonnie Ferguson and I first
rescued Ross from a kill shelter near Stillwater,
OK. he was a puppymill rescue. We placed
him in California a couple of years ago.
Ross was recently returned to us due to personal
family issues of the adopter. Cate picked
Ross up for us and kept him until he went
to his new foster home!
Hi Robin,
I'm sure you've heard these stories a thousand
times, but I want to share this one w/you
since it's special to me. Carrie e-mailed
me Friday asking if I could take in (very
shy former puppy mill) Ross until he could
fly to his foster family in WA. I knew that
it would be difficult to find someone Memorial
Day weekend so Michael and I immediately
agreed. Little did I know this shy little
guy would bring so much comfort to my family.
My 82 year mom was
diagnosed with Stage
IV
pancreatic cancer
last week. Her brother
died of pancreatic
cancer three years
ago
- no one else on
her side of the family
has
ever had cancer so
it's been a complete
shock
- her mom lived until
94 - mom's been thinking
all week that she's
going to beat this
thing
even though her oncologist
told her they
wouldn't do a biopsy
because they're afraid
she wouldn't survive
that procedure.
We met w/hospice
today. When I opened
the
door to my mom's
apartment, Ross immediately
headed toward my
mom, sniffed her
and jumped
up next to her on
the couch. The hospice
worker couldn't believe
that this was the
first time Ross met
my mom - she thought
for sure he was a
therapy dog! He sat
next
to my mom while the
hospice worker explained
what they do. Ross
let mom pet him over
and
over while she finally
took in the fact
that
she's going to die.
This little guy who
was
treated so cruelly
in the past gave
her so
much comfort - he
gave us all comfort
while
we sobbed together.
He sat by her side
until
we left.
Once again, if I
were in a position to adopt,
I'd keep him and
train him for a therapy
dog. He loves Michael
and follows me every
where. He loves to
walk and snuggle. Doesn't
bark - doesn't pee
or poop in the house!
These little boys
sure are sweet! I guess
we're just meant
to quarantine or foster
for now :-)
I can only imagine
how difficult your
job
is, but I want you
to know that saving
this
one little guy's
life a few years
ago changed
the life of my entire
family today.
Love, Cate

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
