Gem of the Day: "I am joy in a wooly coat, come to
dance into your life, to make you laugh!"

~Julie Church~

Introducing "Pipper Piglet Pinktoes" Pressnall
(Try saying THAT real fast!)

Dale and I have an announcement. We have a new baby. His name is "Pipper". (Yes, it rhymes with "Chipper" but at the time that I named him, I wasn't planning on adopting him.) Life is what happens when you're making other plans, you know!

Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to our newest members of our Small Paws® Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who may have seen us on October 24, 2011 on Fox and Friends in New York City, or on Animal Planet on "Dogs 101.", or you may have recently read about us in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness, 101 Stories about Finding Your Purpose, Passion and Joy , or you may have seen us on "Inside Edition" with Deborah Norville.

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, click here to read it.

You already know about our other three Bichons, all rescued by Small Paws. And of course. Sally Anne Pressnall, Dale's Kansas Highway Rescue Dog.

First, there was Chipper the Tall, the one who started it all, for me. The one who introduced me to the underground world of puppy mills, and the nightmares, therein.

Chipper turned 14 on February 19, and is doing well. He has a collapsing trachea and he takes meds for that, but otherwise, he is good! He still throws AND catches the ball and plays with his brothers. Here he is at last fall's Okie Bash.
(Fastest tail in the West)

Then there is 12 year old Spunky the Monkey, who is just my heart.
He is doing well, too! Scroll down to see him wrestle Reagan and Pipper!

Then. last year we added Baby Reagan to our family. He has dry eye in his left eye but you really can't tell it now! He takes eye drops daily.

And now, Bichon number four has made his way through our doors.

I've asked our Florida Team Leader, Susan Garrison, to help me explain.

Sometimes God calls upon you for reasons you don't understand. Back in April after losing my Bart, God said open your heart and home. So Robin asked if I could take her foster dog in. I said yes (or so I thought I did). Plans were made for a little bit of fluff to fly from Tulsa to Dallas and then on to Ft Lauderdale. Or so everyone thought.

Sometimes God has other plans and you are just a instrument in the event. Now I invite you to read the story of my God Son Pipper Pressnall. Enjoy and God Bless.

Dale and I rescued Pipper from a kill shelter about an hour away from Tulsa.

After his vetting, we picked him up to FOSTER him. He is about six months old.

I knew that Susan would be a wonderful home for him and we made all of the arrangements for him to fly to her.

When he first came here, Reagan would not EVEN acknowledge his lowly presence.

When I told Reagan that Pipper had a new home and would be leaving us in a few days, he began to wrestle him. 24 hours a day wrestle him. I mean REALLY wrestle him.

Then Spunky joined in.

See all four in this short video.

But I knew that he would have a great home, so Dale took him to get his health certificate to get ready to fly to Susan on a Saturday morning.

It was sad on Friday night, and we told him that we would always love him, but that he would have a great home in Florida, and we all went to sleep.

Then, about five in the morning we were all waked up by a huge storm.

The Weather Channel said that there were tornado warnings in Tulsa. Ruh-Roh.

And his layover city, Dallas, was expecting 70 mile an hour straight winds at the time he would have been landing there, AND Ft. Lauderdale, his destination airport city had Gale Force wind warnings for aircraft, there.

ALL THREE CITIES HAD MAJOR STORMS HAPPENING ALL ON THE SAME DAY.

Susan had been watching the weather, too.

I called her about 7:00 A.M. and told her about the weather in all three cities.

We agreed he could not fly that day.

Then Susan sent the most incredible e-mail to me.

She said that maybe this was a God thing for him to stay with us. I mean what would the chances of sever weather in all three cities, on the same day, and on the day he was to fly?

I called and asked Susan if she was sure, and she said that she was.

So, now, Susan is little Pipper's God-Mama.

We all love him so much and we owe it all to Susan.

(I'm now on the lookout for the perfect pup to send to Susan, and I am highly motivated, too. HA!)

Here are some more pictures of our newest child, Pipper Pressnall, who has amazing abilities to arrange weather in at least three states. Hmm.

A Rescue Poem

"Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
