Gem of the Day: "Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."

~ Harriet Tubman ~

7 Year old "Bella" came into rescue with four large bladder stones. Her owner couldn't afford to have them removed. She needs our help, urgently. Please see below.

We have a darling little female Bichon who has four large bladder stones and needs surgery.

Her vet records indicate she is 7 years old.

She was an owner surrender because they were on a fixed income and could not afford this surgery to remove her bladder stones.

If we can raise the needed $800.00 for her bladder stone surgery and her dental, (she REALLY needs a dental), it would be done by:

Dr. Jeffrey Phillips (859-734-2245)
Commonwealth Animal Hospital
1058 North College St.
Harrodsburg, KY 40330

This is from her Foster Mom, Kay Myers at kaymyers40@yahoo.com:

"I am not a medical person in any sense of the word, but when he put the X-rays up, I immediately saw 4 rather large stones and he pointed out 2 smaller ones also. I would like to schedule her as soon as we can for surgery to give her relief."

You all know me by now. If we don't need help, we don't ask.

We need help!

We have one matching challenge donation for $250.00 from Jeanne Montross! Thank you Jeanne! We are praying for you!

That picture of you on the tax form is great. Don't know if Louie told you or not that I was in an accident fractured avulsed thumb and a TBI. Memory still is not swift but definitely improved. I go for next set of testing for TBI in two weeks.

So, my friend who catches all the falling bichons from the sky, I have not been too near the computer, the one handed stuff gets tiring. But please issue a $250.00 matching challenge for whatever you need it for.

Hope all is well with you, Robin

We also have had some losses.

Bonnie Ferguson, our Director of Adoptions, and one of our Board Members, lost her precious Bear, a Small Paws Rescue.

We let Bear go to the bridge today.

Bear was born June 1, 2000 and would have been 15 this year. He’d been going downhill slowly and had kidney disease. He was sometimes very unstable in the back end, stumbling and falling over.

Friday night he had a grand mal seizure and then several cluster seizures throughout the night. It left him in really bad shape. We kept him sedated all of yesterday but after our vet came to the house today (on a Sunday, I love my vet), we decided that the kindest thing we could do for Bear was to let him go so he could join his brother and sister at the bridge.

One of the hardest things about loving our fur children is that you are always burying them.

Bear joins his brother Fuzzy who passed a mere eight months ago.

I have no doubt that Fuzzy and Maggie were waiting at the Bridge for Bear. God speed little buddy. You are sorely missed.>

And another of our Board members, on the same day, had a loss.

Joanne Raus lot heir little Lhasa Apso, "Sailor".

Alicia found Sailor online at the Bowie MD Humane Society website. The year was 2000. Alicia was looking for a companion and planned on keeping a dog at the apartment we had just rented for her off the Mary Washington campus. It was February 19, 2000. It was a cold February afternoon and Alicia and I drove in dense traffic from Fredericksburg VA to Bowie MD. It took us about 2 hours to get there and three hours to get back! Sailor was featured at a PetCo or Pet Smart adoption day event. She was a mere puppy at a year old or perhaps slightly younger or older. We were told Sailor was somewhat disagreeable by nature, but when I got down on the carpet to greet her, all I could see was a playful and friendly puppy. She even kissed my face! Alicia paid the adoption fee and we went back to Fredericksburg.

We picked up dinner at a local restaurant and took Sailor and our dinner back to my hotel room. It was a cold and blistery night and I was tired after driving in from Stamford Ct the night before and the drive up to Bowie and back to the hotel. We all fell asleep only to awaken during the night to Alicia's cries from being very sick. She was very sick and we needed to get to to the emergency room but Sailor had to wait in the car. I was frantic about leaving a new pup in the car with my daughter in the ER but managed to check on her very often. Alicia had food poisoning from the Chicken pot pie she had eaten earlier! She was released the next morning and we all went back to the hotel. Sailor slept on Alicia's bed and never got off! And as the story goes, Sailor never got off Alicia's bed from that night forward. She became Alicia's companion and a loyal, best friend.

We lost Sailor this afternoon and with sadness in our hearts, we realize that we lost one of the most dedicated companions we have ever brought to our home. She was our daughter's best and devoted friends. She was not perfect but was she very loyal to Alicia. She tolerated everyone else! A true Lhasa by nature! At times, Sailor thought she was as big as a tiger and at only 14 lbs, she always thought she was much larger! She feared no human nor other dog! She loved to play with our bichons! As she grew into old age, she mellowed and became a very sweet girl. She lost her eyesight last year and her hearing was not good. She managed to get around and we helped her along. A few months ago, she developed a problem with her pancreas. Yet another medication and we hoped she would get better and have more time with us. After many sleepless nights and early morning cleanups, Alicia, John and I wondered when the end was near but each time we fell upon the possibility of her demise, Sailor would rally and go on! Last night was different. She lasted through this afternoon but never rallied back. She told us it was her time. Tearfully we said our goodbyes!

I will never forget Sailor! She was a special and interesting gal! Although she was a happy, independent, mischievous, and playful little dog at times, she could be disagreeable as well. We had to remind ourselves that she was a true Lhasa by nature and we could never change her! This was Alicia's Sailorboat! And we all shall miss her!

And I just got a text from Stephanie Hunter on Long Island, tht she was having to put her beloved J.J. to sleep at an emergency hospital, this afternoon.

He had just been diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and his gums were white. He was suffering.

Stephanie lost another Bichon, Marley, to this same terrible cancer.

She is hurting. Please pray for Stephanie at DANCINBLVD@aol.com.

So that where we are. Some of us are hurting. And one little dog named Bella, really needs your help.

I will issue all matching challenges.

All My Love, Robin

Prayer Requests and Reports

<Subject: Prayers please for Robin Faith

Please keep our baby girl Robin Faith in your prayers. She just hasn't been herself lately. Both her acupuncturist and groomer noticed she was a lot quieter than usual , and Robin Faith is a very quiet girl to begin with!

Earlier in the week we noticed someone had a urinary tract infection; we assumed it was Sparkles because she had already been on a round of antibiotics for a UTI. But her urinalysis was clear. Good news for her but somebody still had a problem. Since Robin Faith wasn't acting herself I took her in. The bloodwork and urinalysis results were like a kick in the gut. Her liver numbers are totally out of whack and she does have a raging UTI. All labs were dramatically different than what we had just in August. We've added in some new meds for liver support and of course antibiotics for the UTI and will recheck bloodwork and urinalysis in 3 weeks. My baby girl just isn't herself and of course I'm worried. She's a mama's girl who right now doesn't want anything to do with me. Poor Sparkles can't figure out why her new friend and guide doesn't want anything to do with her either.

So please keep our girl in your prayers that this is something that we can manage with diet and medication. It just breaks my heart to see her so sad. And of course she has no appetite which is totally new for her too.

My vet did say that I am the only one of his clients who refers to a 12-1/2 year old dog as "just a baby." But she is my baby.

Love and thanks!

Robin, may I ask for the Mighty Prayer Warriors to remember my Dixie?

Dixie is my 13 year old Lab mix, She has been there for the many SPR fosters I’ve taken in over the years, and has welcomed each and every one into our home.

She is an Honorary Bichon!

She is currently suffering from an inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) and Cushing’s disease.

She just doesn’t feel good at all, and is getting tired of all the meds I have to force on her. She needs some prayers and Divine Intervention.

Thank you so much!!

Hugs, Norma>

We had him for the last five years, He is very obedient normally when we say "stay" he will stop wherever he is, so some times we are used to play with him in the yard for he loves to run around the yard in circles, during that time we did not put him on the leash, this particular day he was not on leash and did not yield to the command when he saw some dog across the road. It took off so suddenly the on coming driver did not have time to stop the car. That is how it happened.>

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
