Gem Of The Day: No time for a Gem. I can't believe this is happening.

We're headed into Labor Day weekend and we've just been hit hard again.
Our IL./IN. Team Leader Sara Pace was placed in a really stressful situation today. She went to get ONE Bichon and there were FOUR MORE Bichons in danger of being killed at a shelter.
Sara was transporting FIVE more Bichons to the vet's office.
This will take about another $3500.00-4000.00 to quarantine and vet them all and one of them really has problems.
I don't know what else to do but to come and tell you.

Bijoux (above) is a six year old female and the others are all
under two years old and they are Bichons.

Click below to see what was done to little Bijoux, above, at the shelter.
Look only if you have a strong stomach. She came in chewing on her tail so they had a vet there amputate it. She was found like this sitting in her own urine. I imagine our vet is going to have to go in and clean it up.
No bandage, no pain meds, nothing.

Graphic Picture Warning
From Sara, "Here is a picture of Bijoux's amputated tail. My heart is breaking for this little girl! She is another sweet one."

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.

We are going through a spurt of Bichons, who have been either strays or owner surrenders, showing up at a shelter near Chicago.

They are overcrowded and they euthanize daily.

Sara Pace went there to pick up Bijoux, a little six year old Bichon who came in chewing her tail.

They amputated it.

Click here to see graphic photos of why Bijoux needs immediate vet care.

I got this from Sara Pace today.

Hi Robin,
I am feeling slightly stressed today. I went to pick up the bichon female I told you about with the amputated tail. (pics enclosed and to follow). Bijoux is a 6 yr old female spayed bichon that was surrendered in just awful condition. She had chewed her tail and the shelter amputated it! As I got there, my friend (the doctor) told me they had 4 other bichons that needed rescue! They are all under 2 yrs old, so a total of 4 females and 1 male. They did have some of their shots. So, we just took in another 5 (sorry, but I didn't want to leave them) My doctor friend said in this place they either get sick and die or euthanized.
I am sending pics and updates on all of them now. Help.

Love
Sara:) >

These are some of the others that were saved from euthanasia today.

This is Brittany. She is a 1.5-2 yr old bichon that was surrendered matted, with burrs embedded in her fur. We are not sure if she is spayed, vet will check. She has had some of her shots but will need quarantine, HW, fecal and possible dental (vet to check)

This a picture of Sindy. Sindy was a 1.5 yr old bichon female surrender to the shelter. We are not sure if she is spayed. The vets will check. She has had some of her shots but will need HW, fecal, quarantine and possibly dental. (vet will determine)

This is Elliot. He is a 1.5 yr old surrender, un-neutered male. He will need quarantine, HW, fecal and shots. Can you believe someone owned him and let him get to this point. He was an awful, matted, smelly mess.

This is Destiny who came in from a Rome, GA. shelter yesterday with an upper respiratory infection and a bloody eye. We had to get emergency care for her and we don't know the cost yet. From a volunteer at the shelter about Destiny:
"She is in dire need. Her eye is extremely swollen since the weekend and they almost put her down today."

From our GA. Team Leader about Destiny:

"She is now in our care heading to the vet's office. Thank you very much Maureen and Jim for picking this sweet girl up. Maureen mentioned her eye is all red and oozing as well as sneezing and coughing like she has an upper respiratory infection. :( Very dirty also. She is now Destiny Small Paws.

Laura J Castel">

Sara couldn't leave them there to be killed. They are young healthy Bichons.

But we need your help. People are starting to leave for Labor Day Weekend.

If you can help. we need you.

I will issue all matching donation challenges that come in for Bijoux's Tail and the others.

You just can't know the lengths we will go to, in order to save a Bichon's tail.

They love their tails.

Some dogs are ok without their tails.

Bijoux will have to be ok.

I only wish we could have had a chance to save her tail.

It was probably something as simple as allergies. She looks good everywhere else.

But I digress.

We do need your help.

All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
