If you missed our previous newsletter, here it is.
This is a difficult newsletter to write.
We have some sad news about little Jazz in
Colleyville, Texas.
We told you that
he was very sick
in our
last newsletter.
Unfortunately, he got sicker and sicker and
he was suffering.
Jazz was euthanized due to a combination
of advanced distemper, influenza, and the
herpes virus.
Dr, Wilson, his vet,
called me and told me
he was suffering
and lingering, and there
was nothing more
that we could do for him
but to let him go
home to God.
The blood work results came back the next
day confirming that something was very, very
wrong.
The Ft. Worth Shelter where we found Jazz,
was in the news last week about their problem
with distemper.
Sadly, we are not the only ones to which
this happened. :(
Citizens Demand Action After Some Dogs Adopted
From City Shelter Die Of Distemper

"Jazz" was only 3 years old and
weighed 13 lbs. He was Heartworm positive,
had distemper, influenza, and tested positive
for the herpes virus.
God Speed little
Jazz. You were loved and
you were wanted.
We know where you are and
in Whose arms you
are resting, completely
whole and well.
Because of our strict quarantine procedures, no other SPR Bichons were exposed.
And, on another sad note, another of our
Small Paws family
went home to God after
a valiant fight with
canine lymphoma.
It was Calvin and Penny's "Lexie".

recent Florida Bash.

SPRINGTIME LADY “LEXIE”
April 15, 2001 –
May 10, 2013
After a 1 year long
battle with Lymphoma,
Lexie is home with
God.
She went peacefully
while in our arms
yesterday
afternoon.
From day one Lexie
was our special gift.
She was supposed
to go to another
couple
and we were to get
one of the boys from
the
breeder. When the
breeder was delivering
the dogs the other
couple changed their
mind
and chose the boy
we were to get. Lexie
was
a tiny little 9 week
old girl with a face
everybody could love.
It has been very difficult knowing this day
was coming. We appreciated all the prayers
and thoughts from all our friends and family.
Lexie will be in
our hearts forever
and will
be missed tremendously!
Thank you for all
the prayers and kind
thoughts,
Calvin & Penny<
Bichons are still coming into rescue, needing
heartworm treatments,
bladder stone removals,
and expensive dentals.
We have a memorial challenge for one of our
little ones named Benjamin, in honor of Calvin
and Penny's Lexie.

Meet Benjamin. Benjamin
is 8 years old and
we learned that he
will needed bladder
stone
surgery. He had a
stone in his bladder
and
two small ones in
his penis. He is
at the
New Haven Ct Animal
Hospital and he also
needs a dental. The
cost of the xrays
today
was $200. The estimated
cost of the bladder
surgery is $1200-1500
and the dental is
$300-450.00.
The hospital will
extend a 25% rescue
discount
on the estimate.
I wish I had better
news!

Benjamin's bill is going to be about $1500.00.
Help is needed.
On a personal note, we've had our hands pretty
full here with our personal Bichon, Chipper,
who is 15 years old. He's the reason I learned
all about puppy mills and started it all
for me, back in 1998. Chances are if you
have adopted from SPR, you wouldn't have
had your baby, had it not been for Chipper's
story.
Chipper's Story of
Survival From A Puppy
Mill
If you were at the recent Suncoast Picnic
in Florida, you know that I arrived late
that Sunday morning, and that I had been
crying.
Dale, my husband, had just told me that something
had happened to our Chipper.
Chipper came in from
his walk and went
down
in his back end and
was paralyzed.
He could not stand or walk or hold himself
up to go to the bathroom. He is 15 years
old.
And there I was out
of town.
Dale was tearing up on the phone and it was
the most helpless feeling.
Of course Dale took him to the ER and his
Internist, Dr. Hodges wanted us to see a
VETERINARY ACUPUCTURIST before we made any
end of life decisions.
I was thinking "this was it" and
the first stop I would have to make when
I got back to Tulsa was, well, YOU KNOW.
Well, we took his advice and Dale took Chipper
to see Dr. Heather Owens, here in Tulsa. She is a Holistic Veterinarian
and I am flat sold. (No, there was no incense
or weird music..ha!)
This dog LOVES acupuncture. He WAGS his tail
when she puts the needles in.
It just beats everything
I ever did see.
Within four hours of the first acupuncture
treatment, he was standing.
After the second
treatment, he was
walking.
After the third,
he was climbing all
of our
steps and if you
have been to our
house you
know we have lots
of steps!
He is able to come in and go out of the doggy
door!
He was diagnosed
with a blood clot on his
spinal cord. The
acupuncture has dissolved
it, we believe.
I don't know HOW it works, I only know THAT
it works.
Yesterday, Chipper
was on the underwater
treadmill with the
Vet Tech/Water Therapist,
and he seems to be
back to normal!
I just stand amazed
at this precious
little
white dog.
He has circled the
drain so many times
that
my head spins when
I try to count them.
He has taught me so much about life and about
never giving up.
Then, as if that wasn't enough, our Spunky
Monkey Pressnall began screaming in pain
last week. If you haven't heard our Monkey
scream, well, you just don't know what you're
missing. OH LORD GOD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL!
Off to the vet we go and again, they send
us to the dart thrower. (Affectionate name
for acupuncture lady vet.)
Spunky the Monkey has a bulging disk in his
little back.
Two! Two! Two mints in one!
(If you are too young to understand this
phrase, please do not come to me for sympathy.
I am rapidly becoming an old person with
fond memories of my youth. I THINK it was
my youth, at least.)
Now we have TWO of them getting acupuncture.
We have TWO of them
needing lifted on and
off the bed. They
are not allowed to jump.
Their Dad is a trooper
and carries them around,
asking them who catered
to them this time
last year, all the
while knowing the answer.
We are so blessed by our two older Bichon
boys! All My Love, Robin

We had him for the last five years, He is
very obedient normally when we say "stay"
he will stop wherever he is, so some times
we are used to play with him in the yard
for he loves to run around the yard in circles,
during that time we did not put him on the
leash, this particular day he was not on
leash and did not yield to the command when
he saw some dog across the road. It took
off so suddenly the on coming driver did
not have time to stop the car. That is how
it happened.>
 Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
