Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about
the Bichons and the people who love them!
If you missed our last newsletter, here it
is.
Again, Dale and I want to thank you all for
your prayers for our darling Spunky the Monkey
Pressnall. He is doing so much better.
We got the final diagnosis when a tick panel
that Dr. Skip ran, came back on Friday.
This is hard to believe
but we are evidently
in an epidemic in
this area.
He tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. which explains a lot.
The good news is that it is treatable with
antibiotics and he is taking those every
twelve hours now.
I have removed a
tick from each of my boys
within the last month,
despite them being
treated with Frontline
Spray AND Advantage
for ticks and fleas.
These are some of
the symptoms and they can
be vague.
"Clinical signs (secondary most to least
frequent, scientific term, synonyms)
Depression, lack of appetite (anorexia),
inflammation of the eye (conjuncitivitis,
ocular discharge), swelling (edema) of the
face, skin, limbs, muscle and joint pain
(myalgia, polyarthritis), neurological signs
(head tilt, circling, incoordination, hypersensitivity
to sound, seizures), coughing and difficulty
breathing (dyspnea), rash, hemorrhage under
the skin (petechia) and sloughing of skin
(dermal necrosis), vomiting and diarrhea,
organ failure, especially the liver or kidneys,
irregular heart beats (cardiac arrhythmias),
low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), low
or high white blood cell count (leukopenia
or leukocytosis), low red blood cell count
(anemia), low blood protein (hypoproteinemia),
low blood sodium (hyponatremia), protein
in the urine (proteinuria), blood in the
urine (hematuria)."
Spunky had the pain in his muscles and joints.
I could have sworn I saw a bruise on his
tummy earlier but Dale thinks I was imagining
things. (MEN. They can't help it. They were
born this way. But I digress.)
So, since Chipper had neurological signs,
which may be nothing more than Vestibular
Disease (vertigo), we marched his little
white butt right up to Dr. Russell's be tested,
and unbelievably, he TOO tested positive
for Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.
We are just stunned but grateful there is
an antibiotic that gets this disease.
The good news is that the antibiotics also
make them feel better within days, sometimes
within hours, and that seems to be what has
happened with our boys.
So, if your dog has any of these symptoms
I listed above, ask your vet if it could
be Rocky Spotted Mountain Lion Fever, which
is what Spunky tells people that he has.
(Hey, I'm just the translator.)
Next, we need a foster
home for these two
Bichon brothers.
Their owners were
both very ill and
we took
them in.
They have been in
boarding since the
middle
of January.
We can't afford to
keep paying boarding and
it's not fair to
them after they have lived
in a real home all
of their lives.
They are located
in Southern Texas and they
need your help.
We can fly them to you for foster care.

This is from Sindy Parsons:

Hi, we're Hobo and Rascal. We are brothers
that have been together since birth and will
turn 11 yrs on April 1, but we act like we
are about 7 years young. All who meet us
say we are the sweetest boys and we truly
are very sweet, upbeat nature and happy to
see anyone that visit with us. We lost our
home because our human parents are both very
sick and could not give us the care/attention
that we need. Due to their strong love for
us, they ask SPR to find us a new home. We
have been at the vets since the middle of
January and we are so ready for a foster
or new forever home. The nice Dr. has checked
us over and we are vetted plus teeth cleaned
and we are ready to go. Our coat is growing
out nicely and we are already handsome boys
but will be even more handsome in a few weeks.
The groomer is keeping our coats in good
shape. Oh, we are also swimming in warm therapy
pool to aid in keeping our muscles strong
and we do have fun at the swim. We love going
walking at the park and going to one of the
nice volunteer's house to visit her dog.
Please considering fostering us or better
yet give us a new forever home.
From the Happy Boys,
Hobo and Rascal.
Online Adoption Application We will offer a two for one adoption fee
of only $75.00 for both of these darling
boys together.

a place for these brothers to hang their

I'm getting another newsletter out this afternoon
because we may have a hit by car one year
old female needing to come into rescue, and
we do not have funds to vet her as of yet.
She has a broken hip and a very affectionate
personality.

She may not be a Bichon, We can't tell until
we see all of her what she is.
She does have a tail and a broken hip.
As soon as we know that we will for sure
be getting her, we will need to come to you
for help for her. All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
