Gem of the Day:

"Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes;
God bless little children while they're still too young to hate.
When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
'Bout old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

From the song "Old dogs, and children, and watermelon wine."

We still need a foster home for this bonded pair. They are being boarded in Tulsa. They are darling boys from an owner surrender to a kill shelter. We can fly them to you for foster care and we are also accepting adoption applications as well. There will be a two-for-one- adoption fee for them both!

Meet Schotzy and Sassy! They are both darling and are a bonded pair. They may be siblings. They were surrendered to a kill shelter in MO.
Got room for two more??

Many of you know Bonnie Ferguson.

She's a member of our Board of Trustees, and she is our Director of Adoptions.

She also my right hand, as she serves as our Executive Assistant. People tell us that together, we make a brain.

Bonnie and her husband Rick, live near Bristow, Ok., about 40 miles from Tulsa.

If you've adopted a Bichon from Small Paws, Bonnie is the one who was e-mailing with you.

Yesterday morning, Bonnie and Rick lost their beloved Bichon, Maggie, to advanced congestive heart failure. She was a month shy of being 13 years old.

Maggie loved Bonnie's various foster dogs over the years, and helped to socialize over 100 puppy mill dogs. She especially enjoyed the puppies, many of whom Bonnie whelped herself. (Including the Bichon puppy with the pen in the picture above, one of everyone's favorites.)

This is from Bonnie.

God Speed, Dear Sweet And Loving Friend

Maggie

2/1/97 - 1/18/10

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. Our beloved Maggie has gone over the bridge.

Maggie was diagnosed two years ago with a severe heart murmur. She was being treated for heart disease and doing as well as could be expected. Sunday late night she started coughing. A different, deeper cough then she'd had before. I rushed her to the ER but sadly she was in congestive heart failure and we needed to make the difficult decision to let her go.

After getting our first Bichon, we were quickly hooked on the Bichon breed and knew that Fuzzy needed a friend and we needed another Bichon. We wanted it to be a rescue dog. We searched high and low, but back then there wasn't a Small Paws Rescue and very few Bichons to be had, except for in pet stores.

Finally one day I received an email from Tulsa Poodle Rescue. They had a 6 month old female, she had been in 6 homes in her short life and had a terrible skin problem. She was hairless, with open wounds and seeping sores. A pitiful little girl with the biggest black eyes and the most incredible loving spirit. Love at first sight for all of us. All she wanted was someone to hold her.

Maggie had a severe case of demodetic mange, left untreated, as she was passed from home to home. The mange got worse becoming open sores and infections. By the time we got her, she had a long flowing tail but no hair on 90% of the rest of her body. She lived in a one-sie for months, to protect her from scratching and chewing the sores as they healed. I had to dip her once a week for many weeks. She had skin scraping after skin scraping, until she was finally declared mite free.

Over time Maggie's hair grew back in and she transformed into a beautiful Bichon.

Maggie was our second Bichon. We teasingly called her Fuzzy's Bichon because we initially got her as a companion for Fuzzy. Maggie and Fuzzy became very good friends. Playing together and loving each other and sometimes snuggling with each other.

Spending much of her day on the back of the couch looking out the window, Maggie was our official greeter.

Maggie loved our foster dogs and helped socialize over 100 puppy mill dogs. She especially enjoyed the puppies.

Though our hearts are broken, our memories of Maggie will live on.

God speed my sweet little girl. I will miss you always.

From Robin: By the way, Bonnie gets around 400 E-mails a day for Small Paws and often times works 60-70 hours a week getting these little ones placed into loving homes. Please don't feel that you have to e-mail her with your sympathies. She knows that you send your prayers for her, and for her husband, Rick.

If you would like to make a memorial donation in Maggie's memory, this is how to do that.

Subject: The Sweet Pea Crossed to the Rainbow Bridge
Date: 1/18/2010 11:18:07 A.M. Central Standard Time
From: dimara1234@hvc.rr.com

Today my sweet, tiny, innocent baby, The Sweet Pea crossed over to the Rainbow
Bridge. I told her to wait for me there. The puppy had playfully
scratched her eye a few months ago and she was fine. The vet told me
that, as older dogs are not that resilient, it finally ruptured. A thin
membrane formed over it and that was all that was keeping it from
rupturing. She said the eye could easily rupture again in the future,
this time completely and it would be quite painful and a mess. Imagine
that - her eye all over her. I could not do that to her. The vet
agreed she was too old for surgery. She was very old, very thin, very
frail, deaf, blind, and loosing her sense of smell. Always bumping into
things and not being able to even find her food dish. She was
constantly flopping down and a good breeze blew her over.
On the positive side, she was the only small dog that I have that was
potty trained completely, she was so "grateful" to have a good home that
it was actually embarrassing, she knew what was expected of her and she
did it without problem, she had this wonderful, although it was hard for
her initially, rare ability to love and trust people despite what those
B______S in the mills did to her. The Sweet Pea was loving and loved to
cuddle up at night in her "grandma robe" on the bed. What will I do
with her "grandma robe" (it was a thick robe from my mother) - I don't
think I can throw it away. My mother would have been so happy that it
was so special to The Sweet Pea. She had the most beautiful tail and
it was constantly wagging as she was so happy in her home and to be with
her family.
The Sweet Pea is now standing up tall
and laughing at the Millers as the noose closes over their damn mills
as the public becomes more aware.
I thank you,Robin, for giving her to me. I owe you more than you can
ever imagine.
I thank you, Joanne, for all the organizing you do and the yearly
blast. You have no idea how much I enjoy it.
With good people like the two of you around. the days of the mills
are numbered.

Please put it out on the prayer list to pray for the soul of this very,
very special tiny girl. She has my heart and I know she will wait for
me at the Rainbow Bridge as I had asker her.
Bobbie, and Siri "Trouble"

Always remember, God loves YOU more than anyone else ever has and more than anyone else ever will!

Will God let us have our beloved pet's in heaven?

For those broken of heart:
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
