Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our Small Paws Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who saw us live in New York City, on Fox and Friends, last month!

Welcome!

Happy New Year to you all!

Yes, we are still here alive and kickin', though here in Oklahoma, we are kickin' left over ice and some mighty cold air!

I know that many of the rest of you are in the deep freeze as well! Stay warm!

And although your Bichons are toasty warm in the bed with you, some other pets aren't as lucky.

If you know anyone who is keeping their dog or cat outside in these frigid temps, you might gently e-mail this to them.

Dogs and Cold Weather Tips by Dr. Bernadine Cruz, DVM.

Ok! First, we have an update on little Hans, who had eye surgery over the Holidays in Ohio, all thanks to all of you!

3 year old darling little Hans (as in Hans Christian Anderson) had eye surgery over the holidays on both eyes. He had more than just juvi cataracts and he needed laser surgery to save not only his eyesight, but his eyes. He is doing great and has sight in both eyes now.
Hans says THANK YOU!!

Next, we have a need for SEVEN foster homes. We need for some of them to be within driving distance of either Ohio or Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Let me 'splain, Lucy

We have four Bichons in Tulsa, Oklahoma who need foster homes. We are paying for boarding them at our vet's office here.

Two of them are a bonded pair that were turned into a kill shelter in MO. They of course need to go together. And, it's too cold to fly them to foster care!

So, if there is anyone south of the north pole who could maybe drive a bit to pick one or two of these little ones from Tulsa, up, we can maybe drive part way to meet you.

This is who we have in Tulsa, in need of a place to hand their little hats! It can be either an adoptive home, or a foster home!

Abbie is a little female who was born December 3, of 2006. She is a puppy mill baby and will need to go to a home or a foster home with at least one other socialized dog and no children under ten years old.
"Rehabilitation of a Puppy Mill Dog."

Ollie had ear surgery with Dr. Skip in OKC last month, all thanks to all of you! He is now ready for a foster home! He has poor vision due to age cataracts. He is nine years old and he really is darling. He has a precious little personality!
If a new owner wanted to, he could probably have cataract removal surgery.
(We aren't able to provide cataract surgery for the dogs who have cataracts due to age. There are just too many of them.)

Meet Schotzy and Sassy! They are both darling and are a bonded pair. They may be siblings. They were surrendered to a kill shelter in MO.
Got room for two more??

Ok. Are you ready??

We have four BICHINI puppies who need adoptive homes!

"What", you may ask, "is a BICHINI?!"

What is a BICHINI?

It's when a Bichon comes into rescue already pregnant,, and the puppy miller tells us the Daddy was a Weeny Booger. A dachshund. A Weeny DOG.

BICHINIS aren't an after dinner drink. And here is a picture of two of them, We have FOUR of 'em. Three males and a female. They are located all over Ohio! The closer you are to there, the better! Look outside! That's why! HA!

So, we need foster homes within driving distance or, we have to wait until warmer temps come and we have to continue to pay boarding fees for the guys in Tulsa. Then we can fly them out.

So do you have room in your heart and in your home for one more? Ok. How about two? All My Love, Robin

Last Monday night we paid vet bills totalling $7,466.96 for the SPR rescued Bichons across the country.

Prayer Changes Things!
Hear the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sing "So You Would Know."

From: Omalou@aol.com@aol.com

(This is from Vicki Furstenburg, our North Texas Co-Team Leader. We are praying Vickie!

We found out this morning, Christmas Eve, that our 14 yr old grandson has Hodgkins Lymphoma. We do not know what stage he is in. He has not been feeling well since August. He had an MRI, blood work, and other tests done, but nothing was indicated so they ruled out all the bad stuff. In Nov his lymph nodes starting swelling. Brett's lymph nodes continued to swell so this past week he had a needle biopsy done and that is when they discovered the lymphoma. Everyone is in shock right now, but trying to keep a positive attitude. His family definitely believes in the power of prayer.>

Update.

<Thanks for your call last week Robin. I do appreciate it. Brett, my grandson, was having surgery that very day to remove a lymph node and install a port. Fortunately, the surgical biopsy and P.E.T.-CT scan confirmed he has Hodgkin's Lymphoma and not non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. We were relieved to find this out. The treatment success rate is much higher for Hodgkin's than non-Hodgkin's. Unfortunately, they classified his stage of cancer at Stage 4A. This was due to the fact that they found that the Hodgkin's is more widespread than originally anticipated. Most seriously, they discovered several nodes of it in his lungs.
Then, they mapped out his treatment plan. Stage 4A has the same positive prognosis, but the treatment duration is longer. Brett will need chemotherapy for six months, January thru June and radiation the month of July. He'll be making sixteen+ trips to the hospital each month. We saw Brett respond in marvelous and courageous fashion to all this news. When given the option to start chemo next week, Brett declined and said he wanted to get started right away and underwent his first two rounds of chemo on Dec. 31. He is feeling some of the negative side affects from the chemo, but overall his spirits are high. Brett's attitude has been great and is solid in his trust in God.>

When you send out your next newsletter would you put in a prayer
request for me? My sister has an acoustic neuroma in her head and
needs surgery to remove it on Friday. They have a long drive ahead of
them from upstate NY. to Pittsburgh, Pa where they are going to one of
the best doctors in the country who does this procedure. She will have
to have a halo put on her head and the entire procedure takes place
while in an MRI machine. The halo will be screwed into her skull.
Yuck!! Please ask our Small Paws prayer warriors to remember Peggy
(Cummings) in their prayers for calmness during this procedure, a
successful outcome to the surgery and safe travel to and from. I will
fly back Friday for 2 days to get Mom for the winter months. Thanks.
Love Barb>

Always remember, God loves YOU more than anyone else ever has and more than anyone else ever will!

Will God let us have our beloved pet's in heaven?

For those broken of heart:
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
