Gem of the Day: No time for a gem today.
We have an emergency situation.
A precious Bichon
has been attacked
by something
or someone, and is
in very bad condition.
He either needed
rescued by today
or the
shelter was going
to have to euthanize
him
to end his suffering.
This is most urgent.

I'm naming him Magnum.
So if he lives, nothing
will ever mess with
him again.
Read more about his case, below. He needs
help urgently.

I am so very sorry, you all.
I'm still in the bed and pretty sick with
infected bronchial tubes. I'm trying to sit
up and type for long enough to get these
urgent messages out to you.
Dave Hagadorn said we were below zero in
our bank account after paying over $10,000.00
for just one weeks worth of vet bills.
Then, we unexpectedly got in five puppy mill
Bichons in Ohio.
The estimate for vetting them was for around
$3000.00 if nothing else was the matter,
They are concerned that their dentals will
cause them to go over this estimate for vetting.
I don't know if people
are just away or
what,
but we haven't raised
enough to get up
to
zero yet, and then
we have these five
to
vet.
Linda Fausey just told us this about them,
I told her to tell the vet that we can't
do the major vetting until we raise the funds,
first.
Great. I just learned they all have kennel
cough and the sad part, is that I personally,
can relate, but I digress. At least I don't
have infected feet but then again maybe I
should check.

I just talked to
Dawn at the Animal Hospital
about our 5
'bichi-bunnies'(feeble
joke). They would
not be doing surgeries
for a
least a week anyway
because they all
have
kennel cough except
Peter,
and he'll probably
have it soon. They
have
them on a broad-spectrum
antibiotic so that
it will help with
the
kennel cough and
their
infected feet as
well. They are all
HW negative
and have good knees,
no
worse than a 1-2.
All are free of heart
murmurs.
They have had all
vaccinations and
vets would not have
done
surgeries soon after.
They
all had to have ears
cleaned, plucked,
and
swabbed. They had
horribly
filthy ears. Their
teeth are 1/4 to 1/2 inches
deep in tartar. Little
Flopsy, who is the
most timid, was being
examined when a canine
tooth
fell out in the vet's hands. Dawn said one good possibility is that
heavy tartar usually
results in easier
extractions,
saving us money.
This hospital is very rescue friendly. They
aren't far from the Amish
millers and have
several rescues that
bring
in mill dogs. They
have 5
vets and consider
dental work a speciality
there, having excellent
equipment. The techs have begun working with
the puppers to teach them
to walk on different
surfaces, concrete,
vinyl, stones, and
grass. They
are walked 4 times
a day and the kennels
are cleaned while
they are
out.The girl bichi-buns
are beginning to
leave their huddle
in the
corner of the large
kennel to walk around
some. They will try
to keep
costs as low as possible
They understand
that you are trying
to raise
money for the surgeries
and dentals and present
costs. I pray that
generous Small Pawsers
will send what they
can for Peter, Flopsy,
Mopsy, Topsy, and
Cottontail so that
they
can be healthy and
ready to
learn how to be a
wonderful pet.
Linda
Then we were notified by a shelter that a
precious little Bichon has been attacked
by something. His owner waited three days
to bring him into the shelter, today, and
it sounds like he was just almost dead.

Subject: UPDATE on
injured dog
Just talked to Dr.
Lott. The dog is
VERY
weak and not trying
to walk or eat. He
has
a very bad abscess
on his right front
leg
and a 8" diameter
open wound on his
right hind leg. You
can see the muscle
and
tissue. He may lose
the leg. They will
take
x-rays later tonight.
He may never regain
control of his hind
legs or bowels, but
it's
too early to tell.
The shelter is definitely
pursuing cruelty
charges against the
owner.

These are our matching donation challenges.
I hope some of you
are out there and
can
help. I'm here and
will try to send
out more
matching challenges
if they come in.
Thanks so very much to all of you who are
helping these Bichons.

Hi Robin: So sorry to hear you're so sick,
that's not fun!! Hope you can shake it off
quickly.
Monty and Duffy would like to issue a challenge
for $25 each for NOT having to be in the
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. They'd
rather chase squirrels and jump into mud
puddles instead of having to have their hair
combed for hours. So for 'real' fluffs who
are glad to be able to enjoy life, how about
matching Monty and Duffy? jeanne>

Hi from Tucson, a challenge to match our
$30.00 "dog aid." So very glad
the pups are out of the puppy mill!

So we need help for
these Bichons.
I know you would want me to come and tell
you.
Thanks for all of your well wishes. Bonnie
is checking my e-mail for emergencies only
while I'm taking my meds and hoping for improvement
soon. There is a song in my head that won't
leave for some reason.

I breathe and to love you." All My Love,

Last Monday night we paid vet bills totalling
$10,840.48 for
the SPR rescued Bichons
across the country.
We've paid vet bills for the first half of
February
of 2010 totalling $19,164.65, averaging $1279.64
a day.

Humphrey Sisco

When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
