Gem of the Day: "Too often we underestimate
the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word,
a listening ear, an honest compliment, or
the smallest act of caring:
all of which have
the potential to
turn
a life around."

To make a one time donation, or a monthly
donation to Small
Paws Rescue, you
may use
your major credit
card securely, at
this
site.
Stephanie Hunter has taken your credit card
donations for several years! She wanted to
be available so that she can volunteer more
at her local shelter, and spend some more
time with her beloved horse! She will still
be managing your recurring monthly credit
card donations, so she will still be around!
Thank you Stephanie,
for a job well done!
Susan Sebring, of Topeka, Kansas, is the
co-founder of Small Paws Rescue! Susan has
been very active since the beginning with
managing and editing the SPR volunteer pages,
and providing technical computer assistance
to one computer challenged blonde person
who shall remain nameless.
Susan is going to
be the one helping
you
to make your credit
card donations, now!
I remember almost 12 years ago when Susan
and I met on the AOL Bichon Frise Message
Board. I remember we almost called this magnificent
obsession, "Two Broads and a Leash."
(Yes, God was looking
out for us even then,
obviously, as we
did not end up with
that
name, and the rest,
as they say, is history!)
I hope you will make Susan feel welcome
as she steps into Stephanie's well trod shoes
as she takes a much deserved rest!
So, if you've made a past donation by credit
card, you may e-mail Susan Sebring at susan@smallpawsrescue.org to let her know the amount of your donation
for the Bichons.
You may also call your credit card donation
in to Susan at 1-785-224-7839
She is on Central Standard Time!

your call if she is not available!)

We're doing a little better this week, thanks
to so many of you helping us last week, but
Dave Hagadorn tells me we are still roughly
$2000.00 in the red after paying our vet
bills.
And, we have an urgent surgery that needs
to be done on a precious boy, who was in
a shelter in South Texas, until they called
us to help him.
Otherwise they would
have had no choice
but
to, well, let's just
say it's a good thing
that they called
us.

Meet 8 year old Beau. He has a perineal hernia.
What is a perineal hernia?
Ok. But, remember,
you askeddddd.
Perineal Hernia Complete WITH Drawings
"A perineal hernia is a condition that
occurs in both dogs and cats in which there
is an abnormal displacement of pelvic and/or
abdominal organs (small intestine, rectum,
prostate, bladder, or fat) into the region
around the anus called the perineum"
Col. Glennda Bruce, (glbruce@att.net) our
South Texas Team Leader, types while Beau
tells his story.
"Hi, my name is Beau and I'm 8 years
old. My family gave me up to a shelter because
I needed a lot of medical care and they could
not afford to do it and they thought this
was the best chance for me to get well. A
nice lady from Small Paws Rescue came to
the shelter on a very cold, rainy day and
got me. I'm so grateful that I didn't have
to stay there because it is not the Hilton.
My biggest problem is that I have a hernia
in a very private place and some of my vital
organs could get caught in it and cause BIG
problems. I hurt. can anyone help me not
to hurt?
Love you, Beau"
Glennda says "The hernia needs to be
fixed before something
(intestines, prostate,
etc) get strangled
in it, and it is
hurting
him.
This is the note
the shelter sent:
"Source left a note stating dog has
a perineal hernia, enlarged prostate, bad
tooth, infected ears, and possible other
things wrong with him.Overnight he began
urinating blood, and is in terrible pain.
Also said he can only eat canned food and
will need pain meds, had last dose at 9:20
a.m. ( they left no records or medications)
"
Since he has diarrhea, he has to be on IV
antibiotics first, before they can do the
surgery. He is also on pain killers. Glennda
is taking care of him as she is an RN and
can handle the IV's.
The estimate for surgery to repair this,
is for $850.00 and that is with a rescue
discount.
This doesn't include
the emergency run we
had to make on Wednesday.
Can you help us to
help Beau? I can't
even
imagine how much
this must hurt.
Talk about a knot in your stomach.
If you can help, this is how to do that.
I will issue all
matching challenge
donations
for Beau. Ouch.

Last Monday night we paid vet bills totalling
$3,763.33 for the SPR rescued Bichons across
the country.
We just paid $30, 441.31 in vet bills in January.

Robin, now that I am up from my knees only
for a moment, I'd like to ask a favor of
all the Small Paws Prayer Warriors, not for
a Bichon but for our OES Sophie who is 10
but too dear to let go just yet. We need
a miracle of time for her or strength for
all of us and her vets. She is in Florida
and I am now in NV. I am your mobile volunteer
from Maine to Arkansas and now Nevada. It
is hard to be away at a time like this. Also
a small prayer for my Yardley who is a 15
yr old Bichon and not doing well either.
We need some prayers and some miracles here
today, now. Thank you. All our love and warm
NV sunshine to you in OK and all the others
suffering from ice and snow. Pic of our Sophie
was just last Thanksgiving at Pensacola wedding
beach. Look into those beautiful eyes and
see a real soul-mate.

I'm going in tomorrow
for a cardiac catheterization
- not a big deal,
done as 'out patient'
unless
they put a stent
in, then they'll
keep me
over night; I should
be back to work Monday
- but I could use
a 'Good Word' or
two with
the Guy Upstairs
if you have a chance
to
chat with Him tonight;

Will God let us have our beloved pet's in
heaven?
For those broken of heart:
"It came to
me that every time
I lose
a dog they take a
piece of my heart
with
them. And every new
dog who comes into
my
life gifts me with
a piece of their
heart.
If I live long enough,
all the components
of my heart will
be dog, and I will
become
as generous and loving
as they are."

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey",
I thought it was
truly the epitome
of what we do, and
why
we do it. I wanted
to use this black
and
white picture of
Humphrey, taken only
days
before his death
due to congestive
heart
failure, to let those
who may be new to
Small
Paws, know what we
do and why we do
it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey
would have never
known
love. He would have
died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because
of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived,
he loved, and he
smiled.
