We have some good news and some not so good
news.
First, thanks to
everyone who helped
us last
week, we were able
to pay ALL of our
vet
bills this week.
THANK YOU!
See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue Totalling
$21,475.04 For the First 16 Days of April,
2012, An Average of $1,342.19 Per Day.

The bad news is that after paying all of
our vet bills, we were left with $1,043.00
in the account, which isn't enough to carry
us through even one day.
Then on top of that, (you didn't think that
was all, did you??) we also have a new rescued
Bichon in Georgetown, TX. who is testing
as a strong heartworm positive. He is already
coughing from this and needs treatment or
he will die.

The best estimate we could find is from Premier
Vet Hospital and
it is for $701.00.
This is just for heartworm treatment and
doesn't cover any other vetting that needs
to be done, such as a dental.
So we do need your
help to be able to
help
little Buddy.
His was a rather
strange case. He
was found
by a good samaritan,
who did everything
she
could to find his
owner.
Buddy was microchipped,
so Home Again gave
the lady the name
and number of the owner.
The owner seemed happy to learn that Buddy
had been found, but then didn't show up to
come to take him home. Hmm.
The owner was called
repeatedly.
Finally, I called and spoke to the owner,
and told her that Buddy Lee is ill and needed
his Mom.
She told me that
she had decided she
just
didn't want him anymore.
Of course, we did
not pass this news along
to Buddy Lee. We
gave him our normal spiel
that his Mom loves
him dearly, but she was
kidnapped by aliens
and asked us to take
care of him for her.
How do you say to a precious Bichon, "Your
Mom doesn't love or want you anymore?"
You don't. You use the kidnapped by aliens
story.
Lastly, we have some
sad new from Northern
Texas.
Two year old "Ace" was very ill
with a respiratory illness of some kind that
he brought in from a shelter. First they
thought distemper, but he began to recuperate
and respond to treatment.
The distemper test came back positive, and
although we were able to pull him through
the actual illness, we were not able to stop
the brain damage that occurred.
His vet told us that
he had become aggressive
to himself and to
others, and was now a dangerous
dog.
We've seen this with
distemper before,
where
they start attacking
their own bodies,
at
times, viciously.
The vet recommended that we let Ace go home
to God, and our Board of Trustees agreed.
This kind of brain damage is not reversible.
Godspeed little Ace. You were loved. You
were wanted.
If you can help us
to help little Buddy Lee,
this is how to do
that.
All My Love, Robin

Hi Robin,
This is Kerry Ruffner. You have not heard
from me for a while. I guess I told you that
I have Parkinson's Disease. Well, it has
really been giving me some problems lately.
My meds are not working as well as they used
to. I am in pain a lot of the time when they
decide not to kick in and also when they
decide to wear off early. So, my neurologist
is sending me to Dr. Whiting, a famous neurosurgeon,
who does the DMS ( Deep Brain Stimulation)
procedure for Parkinson's. You may have seen
him on the Oprah show a few years ago. Believe
it or not he is from Altoona. Tomorrow I
travel to Pittsburgh to Allegheny General
Hospital to meet Dr. Whiting and discuss
having this procedure done. It is scary but
the results could change my whole life for
the better. So please say a little prayer
as I make the most difficult decision I have
had to make in a long while.
Then, I heard from
my niece Amanda.
She &
her 5 year old daughter
Avry are traveling
to Memphis the first
week in May to visit
Amanda's friend and
her little 6 year
old
daughter, Arianna,
who has been battling
childhood cancer
since she was three
I believe.
Arianna's last scans
were not good. The
tumor
is growing and the
cancer is now in
her spinal
fluid. She is a patient
at St. Jude's. There
is a beautiful song
that was written
for
her on You Tube.
If you type in Dance
Arianna
- St. Jude's on You
Tube you can see
the
video. It is really
worth listening too.
Please remember Arianna
and her family in
your prayers also.
I will put a check
in the mail for $25.00
when I return from
Pittsburgh tomorrow. Please
use it for any of
those little guys. I see
it is raining Bichons
again. Thanks for reading
all of this. I didn't
mean to make it so
long. Kerry Ruffner,
Altoona, PA.>

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
