"Georgie" is being transported
to South Carolina for fostering with SPR.
Our Team Leader to the Carolinas, Kathryn
Smith, says he needs "peeling",
but after that he should be a great dog.
Thanks to Small Pawser, Sandy Hall, for going
after him.
We have some new matching challenges for
our emergencies and we have one, that has
not been matched yet.
We also have two new veterinary emergencies.
Sometimes I wish
we could have a live web
cam set up so you
can see how fast these
things actually come
in.

Roanoke Animal Hospital

From: cindylu.leigh@gmail.com
Hi, Robin,

Little Cajun is sick.
Roanoke Animal Hospital just called to say
that little Cajun just broke today with diarrhea.
They wanted permission to treat him. The
treatment will take the bill to $690. 00.
I told them to go ahead and treat him. They
don't think he has influenza or distemper.

And then we have a puppymill rescue whom
Cindy has named "Heart" in Oxford,
MS.
Subject: Update on "Heart"

Time
From: cindylu.leigh@gmail.com

"Heart"
Heart, the female puppy mill dog that was
at the Oxford MS. Shelter, has
been vetted. With their discount of about
$200, the bill
came down to a little over $750.00. She tested
negative for Heartworms
and for Brucellosis.
She had a dental
and
10 teeth were removed.
Dr.
Payne said she had
the thickest uterus
he'd
ever seen and had
probably
birthed over 100
puppies in her 7
years.
She also has a cataract
in
one eye and probably
has little or no
vision
in that eye. She
is shy,
and trembles in a
new situation, but
she
is also curious and
wants to
investigate everything.
She LOVES rubbing
and petting, does
not run
when approached,
and should be a wonderful,
sweet pet when she
gets a
little more socialized.
I'm going to donate
$250 toward her vetting,
bringing the total
we owe Animal Clinic down
to $500. I have moved
Heart to my groomer's
boarding facility
in Sardis (which is much
cheaper) and I'll
pay for that.
Hopefully I can find
a foster home quickly.

We still have this generous matching donation challenge
that comes from our Florida Team Leader,
Susan Garrison at scgmiata1@comcast.net. .
Susan had to put her 16 year old Bichon,
Bart, to sleep a couple of days ago. He was
fine, then just went downhill in a few days.
She's issuing a matching donation challenge
for $2000.00 in his memory.
She said it's because
Bart was her second
Bichon, he gave her
1000 kisses, and
he gave
her 1000 tears.
We know this is a huge challenge and we are
hoping that someone is blessed enough to
be able match it.

Dawson Hefley
It's been two years this month since we lost
our special boy, Dawson. But our SPR foster/senior
adoptee Lexi has brought us much joy in the
last 8 months, despite her medical issues.
In Dawson’s memory, please issue a challenge
for $300.00. You can split up into 3 $100.00
match, or by one $300.00 match. Thank you
for all you do! Cindy Hefley >
And from Jane Robinson in Arizona we have
this "tax relief" challenge. Jane
will match up to the first $500.00. Thank
you so much, Jane.

Robin,
I’m so sorry to hear
of all the problems
you’re having.
I just had my taxes
done and was pleasantly
surprised to find
that we don’t owe
anything
extra to Uncle Sam
this year. I would
like
to challenge anyone
who is in the same
situation,
or who is getting
a refund, to pass
some
of it on to you.
I will match up to
the first
$500.00 and hope
this will help.

up to $100.00. Thank you Lori.

I'm doing a whole
lot of praying (despite
my skinned knee <g>).
I'd like to make this challenge for $100.00
to anyone who has adopted a senior fluff
(like my Leilani, fka Gumpy Small Paws) or
a fluff with a health condition (like Spike's
eye). Even if you can only partly match,
that's fine; I'll match up to $100.00 Please
help. If everyone sends $5, that will add
up to a lot of money. If you can send more,
that's great.
Love and prayers,
Lori Orser>
And from Dolores Lang, in Florida, we have
this challenge for up to $100.00. Thank you
Dolores.

Hi Robin,
Please issue a challenge,
in any denomination,
for up to $100.00
for your
latest group of needy
fluffs. I wish I

hug them
all. They deserve
it.

Lastly, I want to tell you a story about something
that happened yesterday morning here in Tulsa,
in hopes that reading about it will insure
that it never happens to any of you.
Several of you all have been out to our house
and to nearby Chandler Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
We had a few Bashes out there before we found
our favorite place, Post Oaks Lodge.
If you turn right,
in front of Chandler Park,
you are on a four
lane fairly busy industrial
street, W. 21st.
St.
There are a few small houses, but mostly
tank farms and offices of oil companies.
They are doing road
construction there, so
only one lane is
open in each direction.
I was on my way into
town when I first saw
it.
You know that feeling.
The, "Oh no. Was that a dog that had
been hit in the road and is he for sure gone?"
feeling.
I passed him, not having time to stop with
cars behind me but I promptly made a U-turn
to swing back around to make sure. He was
laying about a foot out from the curb.
There was a house there, with a drive way.
I pulled in and got out and headed back out
to the street.
I walked a little ways in the street against
the traffic, which was good because it caused
people to slow down so no one would run over
him again.
Oh God. No doubt. Yes, he was gone and it
had just happened. He was a precious little
Pug.
I bent down and picked up his little body
which was still warm and soft. This had just
happened minutes before.
I carried him up
to the house, where there
was an iron fence
around the porch, and it
was locked. A grey
tabby cat was sitting
on the rocker on
the porch.
There was a faded, handwritten sign in the
window of the house that said, "STAY
AWAY."
Lovely. I couldn't even get to the door to
knock on it, so I did the next best thing,
something I do well, if I do say so myself.
I started hollering.
"HELLO? HELLO?
Is anyone here? HELLO?"
The cat came to me, jumping over the iron
fence at the same time that a man's voice
answered, "Hello, be right out."
But the voice wasn't coming from inside the
house. There was a travel trailer set up
up right to the left of the house.
A nicely dressed man came out, maybe 50 years
old, smiling and friendly.
He saw my vehicle
with the Small Paws Rescue
signs on the doors,
in the driveway.
I asked him, "Sir,
do you own a little
Pug?"
His face changed to a look of stark dread
and fear. My heart sank.
He answered, "Yes!
Where is he?? I've
been calling for
him all morning."
15 years ago, I couldn't have done this.
It's true. God doesn't call the qualified,
He qualifies the called. Of this I have no
doubt.
I walked over to meet him and put both of
my hands hands on his shoulders. I looked
deep into his eyes. He still hadn't seen
the body on the step.
I said, "Sir,
I need for you to prepare
yourself for some
very bad news. The worst
possible news,"
at which time he began
to scream "NOOO"
and he began to
weep hard.
"Where is he?"
he gasped.
I told him that I while wasn't the one who
hit him, someone had hit and killed him in
the road. I told him that I turned around
and came back to see if I could help him.
But it was already too late. He was gone.
Then he saw the little lifeless body on the
step, and when he did he began to weep.
I kept telling him
how very sorry I was.
I told him his dog
didn't suffer, as I could
tell it was instantaneous.
Between his tears
he told me how the dog
had never left the
yard before, and how he
knew what cars were,
so he always stayed
out of the road.
He said he never ever did
this before and would
always stay right there
in the yard. Always.
Evidently not.
He kneeled there on the grass, holding his
dog to his chest like a baby, and then he
told me that when I came, he was on his way
out the door to go to the hospital, where
they had just decided to turn off the machines
on his Mother.
He would lose his
dog and his Mom on the
same day.
So if you are ever thinking that you are
having a bad day..
I asked him if he
would like for me to call
my husband to come
and help.
He said he would put his little dog in his
travel trailer until he got back home, when
he could take care of his body. He was still
just weeping.
He was holding his
little dog and hugging
me at the same time,
thanking me for stopping.
Please, if you believe that you can trust
a dog not to chase a squirrel into the road,
or another dog, or a cat, please don't do
it. It's just not worth it to even take a
chance with their precious little lives.
You can never turn back the hands of time.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
