Gem Of The Day: "Dogs truly are able to see into our souls and remind us of the true meaning of Christmas."

~ Author Unknown ~

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our 2018 Holiday Auction! We raised $13,791.00! Your packages are on their way. Dale and I mailed ours priority mail on Saturday. I hope that everyone enjoys their items!

After paying the fees to Bidding for Good, the online auction software company, of $1,241.19, we get to keep $12,549.82 and I wanted to let you know how the auction funds are being used.

First of all, our vet bills for the first 4 days of December were huge. We had some funds so we used the rest to pay this balance. After doing that we have only about $1000.00 left over which lasts us maybe a day.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue for the first 4 days of December, 2018, coming to $11,646.92 which is an average of $2,911.73 per day.

And now, we have an emergency surgery needing to be done TOMORROW.

If she looks like she is in pain, it's because she is.

It's due to a very rare disease in dogs. This disease, which is call CUPS, is usually found in cats.

It's a disease that begins inside of the teeth. Whenever the slightest amount of plaque forms, and it forms daily on all of us, whenever that plaque touches any tissue on her gums or mouth, a bloody ulcer breaks out. It is VERY painful.

This is what CUPS ulcers look like. Can you imagine having those inside of your mouth?

We tried cleaning her teeth and pulling 8 diseased teeth, but these ulcers kept coming, so we did a biopsy. That's when she was diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis or CUPS.

We have already paid $1,629.90 in vet bills for Sadie with teeth cleanings, regular vetting and a biopsy. She is a young female with years yet to live a life with a great quality of life.

This is a letter from our veterinarian to the Chicago area, Dr. Paul Blaso from the Plainfield Veterinary Clinic written to you.

Paul Blaso wrote:

<Sadie, a 4 year old Female spayed Bichon, came to our office on 9-7-18. Physical exam findings at that time were normal except for halitosis (bad breath) and excess saliva. We could not do a thorough oral exam on Sadie without sedation as she was too sensitive around her mouth. Once under anesthesia we could see that Sadie had a fair amount of dental disease and needed several teeth extracted (8 in total). On 11-13-18, Sadie returned after being in foster care because she still have a very foul odor from her mouth, was salivating excessively, and she was still sensitive when trying to look inside her mouth. Once anesthetized, we noted that Sadie had very inflamed gums and several sores on the inside of her mouth. Biopsies were taken and revealed that Sadie has a condition referred to as chronic ulcerative stomatitis.
Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is a very painful condition. Treatment consist of long term antibiotics and prednisone or surgical removal of all the teeth. The problem with long term antibiotics is that they will often develop resistance to the antibiotic and still need their teeth pulled. In addition, there are many unwanted side effects associated with long term use of prednisone. Although removing all of Sadie’s teeth may sound extreme, by removing the antigenic source (excess bacteria that live on their teeth) there will no longer be an abnormal antibody response which causes the chronic inflammation/ulcerations. Although there may be short term discomfort, the benefits far outweigh the long term negative effects of chronic antibiotic/prednisone use that will still ultimately result in us needing to pull all of Sadie’s teeth.
If you are able to during this holiday season, could you give the gift of pain relief for Sadie? Think of it as having chronic canker sores or ulcers in your mouth that won’t go away- OUCH!! Removing her teeth will more than likely cure her condition and allow her to provide years of happiness to her future family. Happy holidays to you all and God bless!

Paul Peter Blaso, DVM>

Right now, her mouth hurts so much that we can't pill her without her trying to bite. She is in that much pain. She is going to need to have her teeth removed.

The first Veterinary Oral Surgeon we took her to wanted $4000.00 to pull Sadie's teeth.

Dr. Blasso helped us to find Midwest Veterinary Dental Services and Dr. Travis Henry, DVM DAVDC DAVDC/Eq

Dr. Henry is double Board Certified and he will do this surgery for us for $2000.00. This is an all day event, beginning early and ending late.

He is located about two hours from Chicago between East Troy and Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

Julie Lyne is going to take him there for early morning surgery tomorrow morning. She will need to stay in a hotel for one night and then bring Sadie back to Dr. Blaso for recovery.

After Sadie heals, she sill be able to eat soft food and will be a normal dog with a normal life span. She will be able to give and receive love to human beings. We will have saved her life.

We only have today and we need to raise about $1500.00 for her.

I don't even know if we have time for matching challenges.

Is there anyone out there who can help Sadie and for traveling expenses for Julie, who is taking Sadie?

All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
