Gem of the Day: “The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.”
~James Arthur Baldwin~

The light of six Bichons is beginning to flicker in Northern California. We desperately need six foster homes for rescued Bichons there to have a place to be. They didn't ask to be hit by a car, or to wind up as a homeless stray in a shelter, where no one came for them, and the only alternative was for them to lose their lives by lethal injection. We saved three of them today from the needle, but we have no place for them and for three others to go. Boarding at Northern California prices is prohibitive. Some vets have charged as much as $30.00 per night, per dog.
The Bichon who smiles up at you now probably was once in need of a foster home. Thankfully, someone stepped up then and took he or she lovingly into their home. Now, these six need foster homes, just like yours once did. I'm coming to you now and asking you with everything I have in me, please, please can you offer a foster home in the Northern California area for a homeless Bichon? Read below to see why this is so very serious.

3-4 year old "Mimi" has probably been hit by a car, in Northern California. She was found on the streets as a stray.

Small Pawser Dana Marjoram's vet tells us that she has a crushed pelvis and can not use her back right leg. She needs an orthopedic surgeon ASAP.
(Mimi, not Dana)

Last Monday night we paid $25,969.17 in vet bills for one week's worth of vet bills.

We have already paid $50,334.07 in vet bills for September, 2007.

Folks, we have an emergency situation going on right now in Northern California. We need at least six foster homes and we need them badly. Or should I say three Bichons that almost lost their lives in kill shelters, need them badly, as well as three others who need a place to go.

Let me 'splain, Lucy.

We have just today agreed to take in three Bichons, from two different shelters, because they were scheduled to be euthanized TODAY as in KILLED DEAD. These three Bichons would have assumed room temperature if our volunteers had not made arrangements to pull them.

We have right at 300 Bichons in rescue across the country right now. This is pushing the envelope on all accounts.

We are telling shelters that if they can place any Bichons in their shelters, to please do so. We need to be there only as a last resort before euthanasia, because we are so very full, everywhere in the country.

When we have this many in rescue, extra foster homes are needed on an emergency basis.

Right now, we need six foster homes to please, please come forward in the Northern California area.

Funds to vet this many are needed as well. We just paid over $50,000.00 in vet bills for September and September isn't even over yet.

And Bonnie and I are working nearly round the clock again. AT times, it's about to get to us, but we are trying to hang in there. This has happened to us before and we somehow survived then, and that is my intention to survive this time as well, and to make sure that all of the Bichons on kill shelters death row, survive as well. We are doing everything humanely possible to make sure that no one dies.

One of these newbies from Northern California, Mimi, a darling 3-4 year old female, has probably been HBC (hit by a car) and has a crushed pelvis. She can not walk on one of her back legs. They found her in the street and had her scheduled for euthanasia just as Dana got to the shelter. I think she knows she made it out by the hair of her chinny chin chin. I can tell by her smile.

We are setting up an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon but we've been to this dance before, in Northern California.

From past experience, this is going to run between $2000-3500.00 to get this little girl's pelvis surgically repaired so that she can use her back leg again.

A male from the Los Banos CA shelter, barely made it out when Small Pawser Darlina King whisked him to safety today.

A female is coming to us tomorrow, after her hold is up. She has cherry eye.

We have no where for these three to go and there are three more who need a place to hang their little hats, until they can be adopted to forever homes.

This is more from Linda Lane our Northern California Team Leader.

Dear God. We need some help. These Bichons need some help. Our Northern California Team Leader has gone above and beyond and SHE needs some help.

If we need to fly them to you, we will just need to fly them to you. Flying them would be cheaper then boarding them for just a week at Northern California prices.

Linda, hang in there. I am praying that help is on the way to you. God Bless you for what you are doing for these Bichons!!

(I know Linda didn't know I was going to share this with all of you, but I want you to see the urgency of this situation.)

Darlena received the male today, what do you want her to do with him. I can’t take him as I have 6 fosters at this minute (plus my 3). So, I don’t know where to place this boy and the female that Dana picked from the shelter, from off the street today. I didn’t know anything about the second female until I read my emails a few minutes ago.

Here is how things sit for N.CA. today.

I personally have Lenny, Squiggy, Murphy, Abby, Lilly Rose and I will be transporting Joey in a few days to Oregon.
I have to place no less than 3 of these dogs in foster homes somewhere.

Robin Press has Moby and has agreed to foster to completion so Moby is ok. (SF shelter pull two weeks ago)

Darlena King has a boy to place ASAP (Los Banos shelter pull from today) and the female with cherry eye is coming to us tomorrow. We need two foster spots for these two.

Dana pulled Mimi with the broken pelvis, today. Foster care is needed for Mimi.

With the 6 fosters I have here I am inundated with immediate needs for dogs. Two are on meds, 4 had surgeries, 1 needs vetting and has a mammory tumor by the way. I haven’t had time to even tell you about Abby’s small tumor. I haven’t been sleeping because of the dogs whining and barking. I have to quiet them down or my neighbors might complain. Not a good time for a visit from animal control since I am over the city limit by 3 dogs at the moment. But the behavior things are all normal stuff when you bring in a new foster, I just brought in 5 at once and it was chaos. It is getting better by the day. It just takes time for everyone to adjust and a lot of my time doing corrections. My senior dogs are giving me not so nice looks as to why all these wild children are here disturbing their peace and quiet. Smiles.

Good luck on finding foster homes. Every single person on the list has been contacted to foster I am going to bed. I am so tired I am gonna drop. Even the dogs are tired today. I took them to the grassy area today. Let them run their little doggie butts off. So they will sleep good tonight and give me a break.

Linda Lane>

I don't know how much more of a urgent need this could be. We don't want Linda Lane to fall overboard. She needs some help in Northern California.

If you are already an approved volunteer, and can take one more more of these babies into foster care, please let me know ASAP.

If you are not yet a volunteer, but are interested in becoming one, this is how to do that! Small Paws pays for all vet bills and for grooming for our foster Bichons!
Online Foster Application

I will ask Donna Brown to put a rush on each app that comes in, as this is extremely serious.

We also need to raise funds for Mimi's busted Pelvis. Ouch. Ouch because it hurts and ouch because it is in Northern California, where everything is very expensive.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.

The gift shop is now sold out of tickets for the 2007 Blanketeers raffle quilt. Thank you to everybody who has purchased them and helped us sell so many in such a short time.

There are still a few tickets in the hands of Blanketeers, and these will be available - first come, first served - at bashes or picnics we attend this Summer. (we will have a very few at the NW bash Aug 27 in Arlington, WA and there should be a few at Tulsa.)

The drawing will be held and the quilt awarded at the Okie Picnic in October. You need not be present to win. We'll get it to the winner if they're not at the picnic.

Printing is limited to 1000 tickets, at $5 each, and we believe they will sell out well before the drawing at the Oklahoma Picnic, October 27, 2007.
(Claudia Bilotti of Stamford, CT won the 2006 quilt! It appraised for $3400.00!)

"Trouble In Paradise"

The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery Series with a special acknowledgement to Small Paws Rescue! In the book, under "Author's Notes & Acknowledgements", this paragraph appears:

A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."

Her business is in a lull, her husband’s lost his job and her best friend is so depressed she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes is sure that things can only get better as she loads her dogs in the car and heads for Florida to work things out.

Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested for the disappearance of her much older husband.

What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.

What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.

Of course, they are signed from Maggie and A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section of the order form!

From: Laurenjedlan@AOL.COM
To: Pup3

Dear Smallpawsers,

Something happened to our Jesse yesterday that blew my mind and I want to warn you about it. We just moved out of our FEMA trailer into an apartment last week. We've been taking him mostly everywhere when we go out so Jesse can adapt to his new home. We put a love seat against the window so he could look out, which he loves to do. Yesterday, though, Dad had to take care of some errands alone, and Jesse was alone for a couple of hours. Well, when Dad came home, Jesse got so excited he went to jump from the couch, but his tail got caught in the cord from the blinds and wound around his tail. The blinds came down, but Dad had to unwind the cord from his tail that was hurting Jesse badly.

I shudder to think what could have happened if it hadn't been Dad at the door. I just thought I'd share this with you.

Love you all,
Lauren>

Ok, these are our prayer requests. If you can't help us by offering a foster home, please pray that someone else can. This is most urgent. All My Love, Robin

Robin,

I just got a call from Rupert's vet, Dr. Van Wynkle. She informed me that the lump she did a needle biopsy on showed signs of malignancy. Rupert is only 3 and a half years old and I can't even begin to tell you the sadness and worry that has just overtaken me. I really need the strength of the Small Paws Prayer Warriors on this one - here is a picture of Rupert so they know who they are praying for. We have an appointment with an oncologist next week so will know more then, but any help we can get between now and then would so appreciated.

Thanks Robin!

Dear Robin,
Please ask the mighty prayer warriors to pray for my baby Beau. After going through numerous tests the doctors have found that my sweet Beau has degenerative mitral valve disease in the low to moderate range. The cardiologist sad that Beau is ok for the eye surgery to remove the cancerous tumor behind his left eye with minor precautions due to his heart problem. After Beau has fully recovered he will be started on a medication called an ACE inhibitor. In addition the blood work showed he has a kidney infection. Beau has not shown any signs of being sick. He is now on a antibiotic for the kidney infection for the next 2 weeks. My poor baby needs the power of prayers so badly. Please include this plea for prayers for Beau in your next news letter. I am so worried about my Beau. He is my baby and I love him and Katie with all my heart, just as you all love your babies.
Bichon love and prayers,

I so wish I could say the same for our Cody but his lump is growing again. Again fingers crossed & if you don't mind would appreciate you keeping him in your prayers. He's really feeling fine just would like to keep him that way if we can.
