Gem of the Day: "A staircase composed of very small steps can reach just as
high as a staircase made of large steps, and the climb is
much more manageable. Every little step counts."
~Ralph Marston~

12 year old Oliver Twist (Not his real name. His Mom, who left him on the steps of a local veterinarian, didn't tell us his real name) was abandoned in a crate, on the steps of a vet, near Tulsa, OK. There was a letter with him from his Mom saying that he had been her baby since 1997, and that he was born in 1995. She said he was just a wonderful boy, and she really loved him. but she just couldn't watch him get old and start to go downhill, so she left him there. They of course called us, and it was all the lady who worked at the vet's office could do, not to cry. Judging by his sparse back fur, I'm guessing we may be looking at a Cushing's boy. The saddest part is that he is just heartbroken. He will lay his head on your shoulder, and press down hard. I looked into his eyes and told him that his Mama had been kidnapped by aliens, and would have never left him there if she hadn't been.
He wasn't buyin' it. He told me that he watched her drive away, as he cried for her to come back.

He's being fostered here locally by one of our volunteers. Thank God there is a Small Paws. Thank God.

Last night we paid $25,969.17 in vet bills for one week's worth of vet bills.

In the first 24 days of September we have already paid $50,334.07 in vet bills.

No, you aren't seeing things. This month, because of your help, we paid over $50,000.00 in vet bills, and it has left us in the hole by - $553.78.

We need to be able to authorize surgeries this week, and at this rate that is going to be hard to do.

Now the good news is this. Barbie made it through her emergency gall bladder surgery!

The bad news was that the bill was at the upper range of the estimate.:(

Hi Folks -- Ken here from Texas again. There was a big celebration in our house tonight. Barbie came home from the hospital. I knew something was different when the door opened. Mom walked in and there was my girl. Mom brought her in and sat down so we could all tell her hello. I wanted her to get down, but Mom said she still wasn't back to her old self. Mom said that the surgeon (he's the doctor that cuts you open and looks inside) fixed Barbie by taking out her sick gall bladder (whatever that is). She has about 3 inches of these funny looking metal things in her tummy. The dogtor said she is doing real good, but she has to rest for about 2-3 weeks. I told the other kids that they have to leave her alone so she get well real fast and that I was going to take care of her.

But we still have a crisis. Auntie Robin needs your help to raise the rest of the money to pay for the surgery and Barbie's stay at the special hospital. Mom said it cost $2175.30 which is a lot of money and more than I have in my piggy bank. The total bill was $2417.00 and he gave us a 10% discount. So please, break open your piggy bank and send anything you can to help pay this bill.

Barbie says "Thank You" to everybody that has already made donations so should could get well.

Barbie's Ken>

We have a new matching challenge donation for Barbie's sick gall bladder, from Cindy Leigh, Member of our Board of Trustees and Team Leader for North Texas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi! Did ya lose your gall bladder?! Thank you Cindy Leigh!

Date: 9/21/2007 7:23:44 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: happylan@bellsouth.net

Hi, Rob,
Having had my gall bladder out two years ago, and having suffered through 13 nights this month on the couch from hell in the hospital waiting for doctors to figure out that Peggy's gall bladder had to come out, I'm sending little Barbie some help to get her's taken care of. I challenge anyone who is happy to be without a gall bladder to contribute what they can to help Barbie. Cindy>

And remember Irving's challenge for $1200.00? It doesn't have to be met in one donation! It can be met by many donations of smaller amounts!

This was Jane McDonald's first ever challenge that she issued and only one person answered it so far with $25.00 to get us started!.

That was Kathryn Smith and she asked me to send this out, in regard to Irving's Challenge! Thank you Kathryn! Kathryn Smith is our Team Leader to the Carolina's and she doesn't even have a Bichon! Now that's LOVE!

We know that you all remember Irving, from Irving,Texas.
The dog with the bark heard around the world!

This is a picture of Irving now, taken at his recent SPR fundraiser/Birthday celebration,
held at the home of his adoptive Mama, Small Pawser, Jane McDonald!

Subject: Meeting and raising the IRVING Challenge -
Date: 9/21/2007 5:23:00 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: landsharkinnc@suddenlink.net

OK, as Director of ANIMAL CONTROL ( Ugh! ) I well remember the horrendous
plight of 'IRVING'; it literally made me ashamed to be in 'Animal
Control/Shelter' work; yes, I know there are many places [can't call them
a 'shelter'] like IRVING came from, and many 'AC Directors' that have the
compassion of a flat rock in a cow pasture; [and I bet Robin knows what I
mean, being an OKIE and all ] -

So, as an 'Animal Control' professional, I would like to join the
'IRVING' challenge --

if ANY Of you have EVER pulled a dog from a SHELTER in the name of
SMALLPAWS, or if any of you have ever even BEEN in your local shelter
wanting to help ( even if it wasn't a 'little white dog' ), know that you
are appreciated more than money can say -- but MONEY talks -- so let's
shout it from the roof tops - [and for those of you that didn't take
'BIOLOGY' -- the gall bladder is located deep inside the lobes of the
LIVER! so, Irving, livers, gall bladders, are all connected] -- \
So, we're how short of meeting the match? -

Stephanie -- put me down for $25.00 --- and know that I wish it was 25
boozillion.

And Kathryn has another challenge to issue! This one is a ROMANTIC one!

In a message dated 9/21/2007 6:27:09 PM Eastern Daylight Time, landsharkinnc@suddenlink.net writes:

How about a $1.00 for every year you've been married! If you and Dale are
anywhere near as happy and Blessed as Dennis and I are, it's worth a
Million!! dollars and more -- and where can you celebrate your marriage
for a $1.00 a year!
I'll put up $27.00 for our 27 years of bliss -- Kathryn in NC>

This is from Jane McDonald, Irving's Adoptive Moma

I am so pleased that you were able to make it to Irving’s 1st Anniversary celebration last weekend. And, I am also pleased to report that we were able to collect $580 in donations for Small Paws in Irving’s name. As I said in the invitation I would match all donations so I am enclosing a check for $620 to round out the “take” to an even $1200.00

I would like to issue a challenge to other Small Paws participants to see if we can “grow” this $1200, in honor of Irving, into an even larger pledge for special needs and/or abused dogs. I would like to see the monies donated in Irving’s honor go to a special needs dog(s) just as he was. It would be especially heartfelt if that dog(s) was also liver compromised.

Irving has touched so many hearts and, of course, especially mine. My prayers are that he can, and will, continue to do so. My prayers are also that he will be here in another 6 months so that we can have his 4th birthday party celebration.

Sincerely, Jane McDonald, Okie and Irving (my heart mate)

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.

The gift shop is now sold out of tickets for the 2007 Blanketeers raffle quilt. Thank you to everybody who has purchased them and helped us sell so many in such a short time.

There are still a few tickets in the hands of Blanketeers, and these will be available - first come, first served - at bashes or picnics we attend this Summer. (we will have a very few at the NW bash Aug 27 in Arlington, WA and there should be a few at Tulsa.)

The drawing will be held and the quilt awarded at the Okie Picnic in October. You need not be present to win. We'll get it to the winner if they're not at the picnic.

Printing is limited to 1000 tickets, at $5 each, and we believe they will sell out well before the drawing at the Oklahoma Picnic, October 27, 2007.
(Claudia Bilotti of Stamford, CT won the 2006 quilt! It appraised for $3400.00!)

"Trouble In Paradise"

The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery Series with a special acknowledgement to Small Paws Rescue! In the book, under "Author's Notes & Acknowledgements", this paragraph appears:

A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."

Her business is in a lull, her husband’s lost his job and her best friend is so depressed she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes is sure that things can only get better as she loads her dogs in the car and heads for Florida to work things out.

Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested for the disappearance of her much older husband.

What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.

What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.

Of course, they are signed from Maggie and A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section of the order form!

But not for long! The Christmas quilts are going to be the best ever, so if you’d like a special present for a friend, or a cozy blanket for your fluff, watch the newsletter in November for some wonderful holiday quilts. Ok. I guess that's all for now. I'm trying to recover from the shock of our vet bills this month. Lynda DeHart asked me if I was hyperventilating.
after we saw the amounts of these huge vet bills, and I told her I was too busy trying to BREATHE to be hyperventilating!

If they could just slow down a bit, and not come in in small herds, or by bonded pairs, just for a little while.

I guess God had other plans, and I've learned one thing by now. His plans always work out a lot better than anyone else's do. That's why I trust Him so. He has never let us, or these Bichons down. Never. Not one time. All My Love, Robin
