Gem of the Day:
The following quotes were taken from actual
emergency room records dictated by physicians.
They appeared in a column written by Richard
Lederer, Ph.D., for the Journal of Court
Reporting.
1. By the time he was admitted, his rapid
heart had stopped, and he was feeling better.
2. Patient has chest pain if she lies on
her left side for over a year.
3. The patient has been depressed ever since
she began seeing me in 1983.
4. The patient left the hospital feeling
much better except for her original complaints.
5. The patient refused an autopsy.

While the Gem of the Day quotes are some
funny things said in hospital ER's, we didn't
have a very funny weekend.
Specifically, SPR Foster Bichon, Mugsy, didn't have a very funny weekend. Neither
did our pocketbook.
Better let me 'splain, Lucy.
10 year old Mugsy had to go to the ER on
Sunday morning. He could not urinate anything
but blood, and he was crying in pain.
This is why. Learn About Bladder Stones In
A Dog . (WITH PICS)
The ER vet told me that Mugsy had a 10 centimeter
bladder stone trapped in his urethra. It
couldn't be removed surgically, and needed
to be pushed back up in the bladder under
anesthesia, where it could then be removed
by our regular vet today, instead of by an
ER vet, whose middle name appeared to be
CHA-CHING.
Come to find out the ER vet was unable to
push the stone back up, but he was able to
pass a catheter through, so at least Mugsy
wouldn't go into kidney failure before this
morning.
From Sherrill Street, our Team Leader for
the great state of Utah:

Hi Robin,
Just got off the phone w/ foster Mom, Sheila.
Sheila will talk to the vet in morning. But
this is what she got from the tech.
They were not able to get the stone pushed
back into the bladder, BUT they were able
to move it enough to get a catheter in him.
So he is pee'g which is good!
I am so sorry about the timing on this boy.
Maybe you can put something in a newsletter
about the signs/symptoms. Difficulty in urinating.
Like the belly band, or where they sleep
they can leave a blood stain.
Anyways, hopefully Mugsy will be fine until
we can get him to Mtn. View Animal Hospital
that will give us a discount. They are just
down the road a little ways from Cottonwood.
I just talked to a gal at the hospital and
was told the charges were $1076.50. I don't
know if that includes charges for today/tonite.
I'll be calling Mtn. View first thing in
the morning. I will try, emphasis try to
talk w/ "my" vet Dr. Kanda Hazelwood.
She is very familiar w/ the SPR and the dogs.
I really like her and hope she can do the
surgery on Mugsy and tomorrow would be way
cool. I'll also explain to her how much we
have already spent on him and see if she
can possibly give an extra extra discount.
Not to mention all the $$ I spend there on
my kids. >
So, we have already spent at least a grand
on Mugsy this weekend, and the surgery to
actually remove these stones in his bladder,
yes, there are several, will probably run
that much, again.
We probably could have saved this first $1000.00
if it hadn't happened on a weekend, but the
ER vet told me on the phone that there was
a good chance that Mugsy would go into kidney
failure by Tuesday morning, if left unattended
and he could not urinate.
The ER vet said he had already tried to insert
a catheter, and could not without putting
Mugsy under. He insisted that this was an
emergency.
Soooooo, we have Mugsy with an emergency
bladder stone problem. Yowsers and ouch.
I guess that 9 year old SPR Foster Bichon,
Sparky, in Dunstable, MA., didn't want Mugsy
to get all of the attention. so he too has
developed severe Bladder Stones and he too
is in tremendous pain. OF COURSE HE IS! IT
WAS A HOLIDAY WEEKEND! (Bless his little
heart. Guess he wasn't paying attention to
the calendar. He only knows that this HURTS.)
From Carol Reynolds, Sparky's Foster Mama:
In a message dated 8/31/2007 1:17:05 P.M.
Central Daylight Time, DunstableCA@aol.com writes:

Here is a picture of Sparky. Yes he is smiling,
we say that he sparkles when he is happy/excited.
He is just the sweetest boy, he loves everyone
he meets. I hope we can raise the money soon
I hate to see him in pain.
My vet has given me an estimate of $1200.00
for the surgery. He can do it as soon as
I get the okay from small paws. I will be
picking up some pain medication for him to
keep him more comfortable until the surgery.
Carol>
This is what bladder stones look like. These
came out of one of our Bichons, here in Tulsa.

I don't have a picture of a Bichon's bladder,
but they are about the size of a sewing thimble,
which stretches as it fills to about the
size of a walnut. Imagine those stones, in
a bladder that size. In Mugsy's case, nothing
else could get around it, so he was completely
unable to urinate.
Have you ever had to go really bad, and your
husband was driving and telling you that
there isn't going to be a place to stop for
at least 50 miles, so do you want to stop
go and visit that tree over yonder by the
cactus bush?
Yes. That hurts.
Before long the urine would have begun backing
up into little Mugsy's kidneys, causing kidney
failure.
Nine year old Sparky's bladder isn't totally
blocked yet, but it's blocked enough to cause
him to be in pain.
Ok! Christine Johnson's timing was perfect

the skies!

Hey Robin,
The fall quilts are here, and I know some
of us are more than ready for some cool weather
to go with them. There are five new ones
to choose from, for the still-low price of
$50 each. The quilts are 100% cotton, with
a flannel lining and batting, and measure
about 32” square. Perfect for naps, or wall
hangings, or even on top of a table. To order,
just visit the SPR website donation page, and make sure you specify which quilt you’d
like in the comments section as you check
out. Please remember to list a second choice,
because these quilts usually sell out fast.
You can see more pictures of the quilts on
my website, and I’ve added a new feature
as well. In the past three years, lots of
Small Pawsers have sent me pictures of their
fluffs enjoying their quilts. I’ve added
them to the website on the “satisfied customers”
pages. If you’d like to see your fluff added
to the group, just send me their name and
picture. The website is: www.christinejohnson.org
We have so many fluffs needing our help right
now. I have a special place in my heart,
and on my couch, for all of these mill dogs
who so desperately need our help. If you’ve
never fostered one, you just don’t know what
you’re missing. These dogs show their gratitude
in tiny steps every day, and it’s the most
rewarding thing I know.
OK, off the soap box and back to the sewing
machine!

Quilt #1: Candy corn Fluff
Nothing says fall like autumn leaves and
Halloween candy, and this quilt has both!
It also features a black and orange homespun
and some polka dots. I had some similar candy
corn fabric last year, and the quilts sold
out in two days. Don’t be left out this year!

Quilt #2: Harvest Fluff
The main print in this quilt is like fall
display, with pumpkins, gourds, and squash!
It is set off by a fall plaid, a rust floral,
and beige dots. Great for a fluff’s nap,
or a beautiful wall hanging for the season.

Quilt #3: Fall patchwork
I found this beautiful fall fabric last year,
and hid it away for this year’s quilts. The
patchwork is to die for, with fall flowers,
berries, and corn in a patchwork pattern.
The other fabrics are green and gold leaves,
and a homespun plaid. It belongs on your
couch or a comfy chair, wherever your fluff
likes to nap.

Quilt #4: Pumpkin patch
The favorite of the Mad Quilter, this quilt
features lots of pumpkins and golds! The
pumpkins are a beautiful shade, and the green
leaf fabric has gold highlights as well.
Order fast if you want this one. I don’t
think it will last long.

Quilt #5: Fall Flowers
This is a great fall patchwork print with
flowers in blue, rust, and beige. A reddish
floral surrounds the fluff, and there is
a beige plaid to go with them. Bailey has
already napped on this quilt, and pronounced
it “comfy.”
Thank you so much Christine! You are the
best Mad Quilter in the world!
I will be happy to issue all matching challenges
for our two Bichons with major problems in
the plumbing department!

The gift shop is now sold out of tickets
for the 2007 Blanketeers raffle quilt. Thank you to everybody who has purchased
them and helped us sell so many in such a
short time.
There are still a few tickets in the hands
of Blanketeers, and these will be available
- first come, first served - at bashes or
picnics we attend this Summer. (we will have
a very few at the NW bash Aug 27 in Arlington,
WA and there should be a few at Tulsa.)
The drawing will be held and the quilt awarded
at the Okie Picnic in October. You need not
be present to win. We'll get it to the winner
if they're not at the picnic.
Printing is limited to 1000 tickets, at $5
each, and we believe they will sell out well
before the drawing at the Oklahoma Picnic,
October 27, 2007.
(Claudia Bilotti of Stamford, CT won the
2006 quilt! It appraised for $3400.00!)

"Trouble In Paradise"
The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery
Series with a special acknowledgement to
Small Paws Rescue! In the book, under "Author's
Notes & Acknowledgements", this
paragraph appears:
A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."
Her business is in a lull, her husband’s
lost his job and her best friend is so depressed
she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes
is sure that things can only get better as
she loads her dogs in the car and heads for
Florida to work things out.
Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for
this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap
magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo
she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name
of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested
for the disappearance of her much older husband.
What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.
What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.
Of course, they are signed from Maggie and
A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put
your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section
of the order form!

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.
