Gem of the Day: "Perhaps all the dragons
in our lives are princesses who are only
waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty
and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens
us is, in its deepest essence, something
helpless that wants our love."
~Maria Rilke Rainer~
Bedford is only 8 months old and he has been
hit by a car. He has a broken pelvis in two
places and he screams in pain. Joyce said
it was almost more than she could stand to
hear him crying in pain while she drove him
to the hospital from the shelter.

One of our So. CA. Team Leaders, Joyce Meier
drove all day yesterday, out in Southern
California, to go after one little Bichon
pup, who was in dire need of our help.
Oh God. This is worse than we thought it
was going to be.
The good news is that we got him.
The bad news is that, we got him.
Bedford is only 8 months old and he has been
hit by a car. He has a broken pelvis in two
places and he screams in pain. Joyce said
it was almost more than she could stand to
hear him crying in pain while she drove him
to the hospital from the shelter.
Last night we told you about this precious
8 mo. old Bichon that was hit by a car in
Southern California. He was listed as a poodle
at the shelter. Uh. I doan think so. He's
as much Bichon as you and I are. This is
what they first told us were his injuries.

How we are going to do this on the heels
of all of the rest of what we have done,
I have no idea. I looked up and asked Him.
"Are Ya sure?"
I only know that I know that I know that
we were supposed to go this small white fur-child,
and get him out of the shelter cage. No one
else would be coming for this boy but us.
Joyce says there is absolutely no question
that he is a Bichon, through and through
and, are you ready for this?
Even with two fractures of his pelvis, he
is sweet and trying to kiss her hands.
The estimate for his surgery is going to
be for between $3500.00 (GULP) and $5000.00.
They they will give us a 15% rescue discount.
(Joyce is going to check around for a better
price tomorrow, but we have to remember this
is California. Gasp. Gasp again. Make that
three gasps.
If I thought we could get him back here to
OKC and to Dr. Skip, we would. I know if
would be less than half of that back here
in Oklahoma.
The problem is that Bedford SCREAMS while
traveling. The airlines don't like for you
to knock them out during a flight in case
they were to have a reaction in mid air,
even if they are in the cabin with a person.
And I don't think we could knock him out
enough to get him to not scream.
He's there with critical care emergency dogtors
now. They can't get to the surgery until
Monday. They are keeping him on pain meds
until then.
I don't even know how to ask you to help
this baby. After the emergencies of the past
week.
I don't have even a clue. Much less with
only a beautiful autumn weekend to raise
these funds for him. I don't know if even
a few of you will even be home.

Hi Robin,
Well I just got home after driving all day
to pick this little guy up and get him to
the orthopedic surgeon. He is a young Bichon
and will be very handsome once he is clean
and healthy and weighs 14 lbs. It looks like
he was living up inside the car that hit
him. He cried all the way to the vet's office
I'm glad it wasn't far. He is now at Advance Critical Care and Internal Medicine
in Culver City, 310 558-6100. I met Dr. Jodi McKenna, who is a critical
care vet and while she was going over the
plan the surgeon, Dr. Kim Carey came in and
introduced herself. He has a couple of fractures
in his pelvic area, one will heal with time
but the other is in the ball and socket area
of his hip. The best plan is to to a Femoral
Head Ostectomy (FHO), she thought this was
the best long term surgery for Bedford. As
you can tell from the attached pictures,
he is in a lot of pain, poor baby's eyes
just showed how strong he was trying to be.
Unfortunately the low to high cost for this
surgery is $3,500 - $5,000, they will give
us a 15% rescue discount. The surgery will
not take place until Monday at the soonest
or maybe even Wed. Dr. Carey does surgeries
on Monday and Wed. and she is booked completely
on Monday, she will try to work him in. He
will be kept comfortable and pain free at
the hospital and they are giving us a break
on medication and boarding. Because of the
high cost quoted I plan on calling the orthopedic
surgeon in Tustin that took care of Figaro
last year. I would like to get an estimate
from them and see if they can beat the estimate
that we just received today.
Well, I hope that answers your questions.
It's been a long day and a lot of road covered.
Thank goodness he was already safely at the
vet's office when I ran the red light by
accident, no tickets today for me!
I will keep you posted on what I find out
tomorrow!
Joyce>
All I know to do is to tell you that this
baby, and he is still just a baby, needs
us. He either needed us or he needed to be
put to sleep to be out of pain. Since he
now has us, I figure we need to find a way
to help him and get him this surgery he needs.
The Ortho vets say that he should really
do well after this surgery and they expect
a full recovery.
No, we really don't go looking for these
HBC (hit by car) Bichons. I swear on the
Bible to you that we don't. They somehow
FIND us. Here we are just mindin' our own
business and WHOMP! Another one comes FLYING
out of nowhere that has been smooshed by
a car and they never seem to win that fight.
(Although Bedford says you oughta see the
other guy, a vehicle that he swears was leakin'
black "blood" on Bedford's little
head.)
The only thing that allows me to ask yet
again is just the thought of any Bichon,
ending up on the road, alone, injured.
They can't ask you for help. They depend
on us to help them. I just happen to be the
one with the keyboard.
When Susan Sebring and I started this magnificent
obsession back in 1998, we never dreamed
in a million years that something called
Small Paws Rescue would turn into such a
force, in the world of Animal Rescue.
We never dreamed that we would be paying
tens of thousands of dollars in vet bills
and that we'd be placing thousands of Bichons
in loving home, many of whom came from the
most horrid puppy mills you can imagine.
I have to believe in my heart, that the reason
we were all brought together, is to make
a difference in the lives of these precious
Bichons, and of the people who love them.
One coincidence may be a fluke. One hundred
may be a fluke.
THERE IS NO WAY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH THAT
THE MIRACLES WE SEE TIME AND TIME AGAIN ARE
FLUKES.
I believe this will all of my heart and soul.
I believe that God Himself has his hand of
protection on these Bichons, and on the people
who love them. There is no other explanation
to me, of why and how the things that happen
to us, continue to happen to us.
There is a reason that YOU now, right now,
YOU, are reading these very words.
It may be that you aren't in a position to
help little Bedford financially.
But there is something you can do.
It's something all of us can do.
We can pray that God will touch the heart
of someone who CAN help this little street
urchin, who is hiding the most beautiful
little Bichon under that matted, oil covered
coat.
Is there anyone out there who will be a prayer
warrior for Baby Bedford?
Is there anyone who can help us to help this
baby boy?
I'll issue all matching donation challenges!
I'm going to be traveling later this afternoon,
but will still be able send out a newsletter
if we get some challenges in! I have a portable
modem and I can contact you all from just
about anywhere now! (Ok, don't everyone clap
at once now)
You see, our beloved Berryhill Chief's High
School Football Team got into the playoffs
and Dale and I are driving down to Muldrow,
Oklahoma to watch them whoop up on the Muldrow
Bulldogs and get into the State semifinals.
Small Pawser Dave Hagadorn is coming to stay
with our house and crew tonight. (Our Spunky
Monkey loves his Uncle Dave and his cousin,
Hammie)
Dale will be driving and I will be typing
away for little Bedford who can't type at
the moment because he is rather busticated.

Last Monday Night we paid $7,404.13 for just one week's worth of vet bills.

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.

"Trouble In Paradise"
The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery
Series with a special acknowledgement to
Small Paws Rescue! In the book, under "Author's
Notes & Acknowledgements", this
paragraph appears:
A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."
Her business is in a lull, her husband’s
lost his job and her best friend is so depressed
she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes
is sure that things can only get better as
she loads her dogs in the car and heads for
Florida to work things out.
Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for
this dog-loving woman.Shortly after arriving at the condo
she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name
of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested
for the disappearance of her much older husband.
What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.
What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.
Of course, they are signed from Maggie and
A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put
your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section
of the order form!

Hi, Robin!
Four months ago, yesterday, we sent a prayer
request for healing of a diabetic ulcer on
Mark's left heel. Today, we would like to
share some good news with you all!! We continue
to do daily dressing changes and go to wound
management physical therapy. In physical
therapy, Mark receives electrical stimulation
treatments, 3 times per week, and his progress
is monitored. Last week, for the first time,
it was noted that he is growing New skin
on his foot! This is indeed a Milestone for
a diabetic This week, on Monday, they
found that the wound has shrunk to about
1/3 the size it was, when he began treatment
in July!! Praise God We are calling this,
"a Miracle-In-Progress"!! We would
like to thank you and all the Small Pawsers
for your continuing prayers! God bless you
ALL!!
