The Heart Murmur Reunion Page

Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our online mailing list, especially if you have recently seen us featured in one of our recent media articles or read about us in the book "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul."

Small Pawsers everywhere welcome you with open arms! We sincerely hope that you enjoy "Small Pawsing and reading Small Paws!"

If you are new to Small Pawsing®, this may look as if it is coming only to you but really it is going out to fellow Small Pawsers all across our country and in 17 foreign countries as well.

Adoption information is posted below. Turn up your speakers!
We have music for you!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is. http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/nov0805.html

I'll be sending you another newsletter soon, telling you that...WE HAVE A BRAND NEW OFFICIAL SMALL PAWS RESCUE SOLDIER, ANOTHER BICHON MOM WHO HAS ADOPTED A BICHON FROM SMALL PAWS, NOW STATIONED IN IRAQ!

I'll show you her picture and give you more information soon!

Ok, I wanted to give you an update on our three heart murmur babies who are recovering from heart surgery at
Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine AND to let you know that we have some darling Christmas Bichon items on our Small Paws Ebay Page! We also have a CAR on our Ebay page!

This morning, Ashley, the little girl who was moments away from death as they rushed her into emergency surgery, is just really coming to life! These babies don't know what it is like to feel good! They have been sick from birth! Once they feel good it is hard to keep them down!

Little Miller, one of the males, have a very hard time in surgery and almost didn't make it. Dr. Ashley Saunders told me that this group has had the worst hearts the staff there has ever seen.

Heart Docs Extraordinaire, Sonya Gordon, D.V.M. (left) and Ashley Saunders D.V.M.

Thank God we have the parents of these little "badly put together" puppies, and THAT puppy making machine is out of business for good now.

Ashley said they had to stay in the operating room forever, to sew up Miller's ductus, it was so large. She said he had a really hard time during surgery. but is doing well now!

Little Matt, came through surgery alright and he too, is doing well this morning!

We brought three in...and we will be leaving with three. NO WHERE ELSE WOULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED, I DON'T BELIEVE.

We have raised enough to do the heart murmur repair surgeries themselves, since A&M is giving us a one time 20% multiple dog discount...but there are going to be extra charges on this group...times three. Emergency fees and ICU fees time several nights, will all be adding up.

We also have some other expensive medical things going on right now.

Each week we get stacks of vet bills. Sometimes these bills are filled with the normal things such as spays and neuters and teeth cleanings, and then sometimes...well...we have other kinds of things.

These are just a few of the things we have going on now besides the heart murmur trio in Texas.

This little girl needs a $1000-1500.00 surgery. If we can raise the money for her surgery, she needs a home! Might it be yours???

Robin -

I have been meaning to get in touch with you to quickly discuss Coco. As you know, Coco came into rescue via her original parents who just could not deal with her allergies any longer. We have taken her to a pet dermatologist, switched her food and have had pretty good results. However, Coco does continue to lick her feet and chew at some bumps on her skin. We took her back for the dermatologists to look at her and she tested some of the bumps. One of the bumps on her paw came back with some funny looking cells and she is suggesting that we have it removed. We received a quote from a surgical oncologist that offices with the dermatologist and the quote was from $1000-$1500 for the surgery and removal of two masses. I would suggest that we ask to have her teeth cleaned at the same time, as they are getting pretty bad. I am going to contact Griffith Animal Hospital (who we have dealt with in the past) and see if they can quote me a price to see if we could get it a little lower. Jason and I have had this little girl since May, have had her on Petfinder since August and have not had any bites. She is older and does have some issues (allergies, hard time seeing, etc), but she is a sweetheart of a dog. If you have any suggestions on how to get this baby adopted, please let us know. We are going away at Thanksgiving and Christmas --- she will stay with my dogs at Thanksgiving with a friend, but will need to be boarded at Christmas if we cannot find her a home.

Hope all is well with you and let us know what you think.

THANKS!

And the estimate to get this one out of pain is right at $1000.00...yipes..bad teeth ( all of 'em) and bladder stones.

Robin, the vet should be calling you shortly. The vet just called me and little Zoey is one sick little doggie.

She will need to have 80% of her badly infected teeth removed! I knew this as soon as I saw how black her teeth were and how horrible her breath smelled. She is also filled with bladder stones! She keeps having to pee and last night in the dark, her urine looked pink.

Sharyn Migdol
Secretary, Education Services>

Then, Shorty is having unusual bladder problems (it's not bladder stones...they have ruled that out already) and they have to do a special dye contrast test to see what it is...and he may need surgery on top of this.

Subj: Re: Shorty

medlins@starpower.netwrites:

The next test they are recommending is the $400. one, which is contrast x-ray. I just talked to the vet some more and she said that on further review of today's urine sample that there were no irregularities but they are sending it on for a more detailed culture which is included in the $261. On the ultrasound they saw what looked like an extra fluid filled sac attached to the bladder (a diverticulum's, I believe). She said this could impact her constant peeing and who knows, may be part of why she was given up. The $400 is just for the next test. If it is indeed a fluid filled sac (or diverticulum's) I think the only thing they can do is surgery to correct it and I didn't ask how much that would be. Sandi>

Then we had an expensive EKG and we need to test for hypothryroidism on little Beau.

Subject: Re: FW: Re: heart rates

Update on Beau:

My vet, Dr Femino in Smithtown, NY (631-265-7170) performed the EKG on
Beau this past Friday. He does indeed have a very low heart rate, however
the good news is that it is not an irregular heartbeat nor is it missing
beats and there are no blockages. Thank God!!!

The doctor did however ask us to bring Beau in on Sunday so that he could
take blood to check for Hypothyroidism. This is a condition where the
enzyme or hormone produced by the thyroid is irregular causing the slow
heart rate. If this is the cause, he can live a very normal life but would
need to take medicine to regulate what the thyroid is putting out. If he
doesn't have Hypothyroidism, the Doctor would like to perform an Atropine
test which is an injection of Atropine allowing the doctor to see the heart
respond to the ups and downs (fast and slow) of the injection. If there's
no issue there, it could be that he just has a normally low heart rate like
you.

The possibility of needing a pace maker was considered however an irregular
heartbeat would typically be one of the symptoms to warrant one and his
heart has a steady normal beat. The only thing that leads me to believer
there is something wrong is that although he is active, he seems to have
low stamina for a boy his age because he takes several naps during the day
and he lays down on the floor or his bed to sleep after what I would
consider an average walk (around the block) or play.

I should have the blood results today so will keep you posted.

Thanks
Laura>
