Hey Bonnie,
The Puppies and Poppies quilt (#3) is completely sold out. As in, OVERsold out, but I’ll figure something out.

Please let Robin know before the next newsletter goes out.

We’ve seen some awful pictures of abuse, neglect, cruelty, etc, but I don’t know anything that can compare to that picture of McCoy’s leg. I’m so glad, and so proud, to be a part of a group that will save his life. Chris

Hey Robin,

The timing couldn’t be better, because the Small Paws Quilt Shop is opening today with FOUR new spring quilts. If it’s OK, I’d like to earmark the quilt donations for those four little mill fluffs who just came in. $2839 is a lot of money, but I bet the quilts could put a pretty big dent in it. You know I have a special place in my heart for all mill dogs. I have one sitting at my feet who escaped the Amish, missing an ear and part of his tail, and another napping on the chair behind me who also owes his life, and an expensive ear surgery, to the generosity of Small Pawsers. To me, saving these mill dogs is the BEST part of Small Paws. Look at the pictures of the four dogs in the newsletter today, and compare those with the “Red Hot Mamas’ in the second newsletter. Those girls are ready for new homes after lives of misery, all because of donations. The four new dogs, with their sad, scared eyes, need that chance, too.

As usual, the quilts are available for a limited time, and each quilt is handmade to order. Please allow two weeks for the ancient quilter and the even more ancient Singer to get your quilt to you. They are about 32” square, 100% cotton fabrics, and fully machine washable and dryable. While most of them end up as fluff beds, they can also be used as wall hangings or table decorations. You can see other pictures on my website, www.christinejohnson.org, which has been updated with the new quilts. $50 each, and please specify a second choice in the “comments” section on the donation page.

Quilt #1: Nekkid bunnies! There can’t be a better name for an Easter quilt which features two different bunnies, Easter eggs, and a plaid.

Quilt #2: Spring floral. Pretty pastels flowers on white, polka dots, and a matching stripe. Welcome Spring!

Quilt #3: Puppies and Poppies! This red poppy fabric is just adorable. It comes with a red and black plaid and some Small Paws paw print corners. Is there a better color on earth for a fluff than red?

Quilt #4: Spring Tulips. A totally wonderful spring fabric featuring tulips, hearts, and a great paw print fabric. Jake’s favorite!

And now, for the special surprise! Robin, someone who orders one of these quilts will be getting the 500th (yes, five hundredth) Small Paws quilt. To celebrate, I’m going to hold a drawing from all the donors, and that one person will be getting a surprise along with their quilt. That’s all I’m going to say about that!

"Trouble In Paradise"

The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery Series with a special acknowledgement to Small Paws Rescue!

In the book, under "Author's Notes & Acknowledgements", this paragraph appears:

A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."

Her business is in a lull, her husband’s lost his job and her best friend is so depressed she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes is sure that things can only get better as she loads her dogs in the car and heads for Florida to work things out.

Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested for the disappearance of her much older husband.

What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.

What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.

Of course, they are signed from Maggie and A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section of the order form!

Your picture turned into a pattern for you to cross stitch!
(Betsy Bunny, Annie (an SPR doggie), Ding-Ding and their Mom Debra have given me permission to use their picture.)

Do you or someone you know like to cross stitch? If so,this item might
be just the thing for you. Have your favorite photos converted into a
pattern that you can cross stitch. It can be a picture of your dog,
cat, child or anything you have a picture of that you would like to
cross stitch. You can support Small Paws Rescue and have fun at the
same time. 100% of the proceeds will go to SPR.
>
This would make a great gift for someone you know that likes to cross
stitch. You can buy the pattern or the pattern and the floss and give
it to them as a gift, or you can stitch it yourself first then give it
as a gift. When you are done, it can be framed or made into a pillow.
You will get a computer generated cross stitch pattern (not a kit). All
patterns are printed out for 16 count, but can be done in any size you
wish. The design is coded for DMC floss and will come on several
sheets of paper. All patterns are done in whole cross stitches.
Included with the pattern is an easy to read symbol key guide and a
color picture of your item. The pattern is printed in black and white
on a laser printer.

Betsy Bunny, Annie (an SPR doggie), Ding-Ding and their Mom Debra have given me permission to use their picture. Above is the digital picture of them and then how it will look after it is stitched. This pattern uses 50
colors and the finished size using 16 count canvas is 8 inches tall by
12 inches wide.

Remember 100% of the sale will go to Small Paws Rescue!
This can be yours for $15.99 includes shipping.

Hi Robin,
I've created a new section in our CafePress shop - The logo is different, lighter, and might appeal to more of our members.

You might want to mention it in the next newsletter you do - people getting ready for Summer events might enjoy some new logo wear.

Also, Buckwheat and Tina are featured on the first two SPR postage stamps, at just $19.99 a sheet.

Maybe it will help to raise some funds for when it's raining Bichons.

Next, this is everything we have done in our previous attempts to capture Annie, our lost puppy mill rescue down in Florida. I know you are all wanting to help, but I wanted you to see what has been done already. Bonnie is answering both her emails and mine and we don't want to be duplicating anything! Again, please don't send jokes, or stories to me as we really need to keep my email account open for rescue emergencies.

It makes it doubly hard for Bonnie to go through my mail if we have to weed through jokes and stories, no matter hoe funny or inspirational they are.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Lastly, this is regarding the dog food recall. Ok, listen up.

THIS IS THE THIRD UPDATE TO PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT, "PET FOOD RECALL"

This updates a notice distributed earlier on March 19, 2007 announcing that Menu Foods, Inc. has recalled "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches sold under 88 brand names. Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall.

Aminopterin Confirmed in Recalled Pet Food and Implicated Tissue Samples

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker and Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Donald F. Smith announced today that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods, the manufacturer of the many brands of dog and cat food that are currently the subject of a nationwide recall.

The Food Laboratory received the pet food samples from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University, where testing has been underway to try to identify the cause of kidney failure in dogs and cats that consumed the recalled brands of pet food. At Cornell's request, the Food Laboratory tested the samples for poisons and toxins, and identified Aminopterin in the pet food samples at a level of at least 40 parts per million.

Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The press release from the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets can be viewed at:
http://www.agmkt.state.ny.us/AD/release.asp?ReleaseID=1598.

PIG EAR DOG TREAT RECALL *NEW*

Petrapport, Inc. is voluntarily recalling pig ear dog treats it imported from a Chilean company during the period August 2006 through December 2006 because the pig ears have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross contamination, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Laboratory testing has confirmed that samples of Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats sold by BJ's Wholesale Club in 25-count packages under the "Berkley & Jensen" brand with no lot number and only the expiration advisory "BEST IF USED BY 2009" (without referencing a specific month) were contaminated with Salmonella.

Additional testing of other pig ear dog treats from shipments during the above time period has not revealed any additional evidence of Salmonella contamination, but Petrapport nonetheless is voluntarily recalling them out of an abundance of caution due to concern that the pig ears imported during this period may not have been effectively irradiated for Salmonella before shipment from Chile.

The voluntary recall includes dog treats sold by BJ's Wholesale Club in its 25-count packages of "Berkley & Jensen" Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats with no lot number and only the expiration advisories "BEST IF USED BY 2009" (without referencing a specific month) as well as "BEST IF USED BY SEPTEMBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY OCTOBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY NOVEMBER 2009," and "BEST IF USED BY DECEMBER 2009."

Also included within this voluntary recall are the following lots of pig ear dog treats sold in bulk by other retailers under the
"Petrapport" brand:

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these dog treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Dogs that become ill from Salmonella generally will have a fever and diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired that usual, and may have vomiting. Some dogs do not have diarrhea, but will have decreased appetite, fever and excess salivation. If your dog has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

While there have been no confirmed illnesses to date, consumers should immediately stop feeding these treats to their dogs. These products have been removed from the sales floors and the sales inventories of all retailers.

Consumers who purchased any of the above-identified pig ear dog treats should discontinue use of the products and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers who have further questions may contact Petrapport at 800-447-3872 extension 110.>

I have got to get back out there and I have a lunch meeting with some other rescuers down here, today. Please keep praying. Last night after not seeing her, when I had the fisherman guy there, I was feeling pretty low.

I'm feeling more hopeful this morning but am now concerned about our bank balance being so low. If you can help, it is so appreciated! All My Love, Robin
