Baby Mandy is very sick. She isn't critical,
but they do have her in ICU on very strong
antibiotics. She was scheduled to go home
last week, but when she began sneezing, they
decided to keep her. She has a fever and
is coughing. They X-rayed and found a pneumonia
on her lung.
Of course this is costly to treat. She is
going going to have several days of ICU on
her bill, that we didn't count on. Her heart
surgery was $2400.00. That's what we counted
on.
Now, in order to pull her through this, it
is going to run an extra $800-1000.00.
I don't know what to do other than come and
tell you. If they take her out of ICU to
save costs, she wouldn't have anyone watching
her in case she started to crash. I don't
think you guys want us to move her to the
less expensive ward.

Mandy was born December 17, 2006, in a puppy
mill in Missouri.
Baby Mandy is our 47th Heart Murmur patient.

From: Coffeymon@aol.com
Robin,
I did a spread sheet for all the expenses
for the dogs. The bottom line right now looks
like $2839.80.
That includes 14 days of quarantine, all
surgeries, procedures and meds. It also includes
a 10% discount on all meds and procedures
and a 20% discount on boarding.
The cost per dog is
Mercedes(f) $644.70
Austin (f) $653.70
Healy (f) $842.70 She is the one with the
mammary tumor.
Benz (m) $698.70
As soon as Benz gets his Elizabethean collar
off I will get a nice picture and write up
for him and send it to Bonnie.

I'm just concerned that our vet bills are
going to exceed what we have to pay them
with, not even counting Mandy's medical emergency
down at Texas A&M.
In January of 2007 we paid $23, 119. 55 in vet bills
In February, 2007, We Paid Vet Bills Totalling
$ 36, 450.23

Last Monday night we paid $6,902.63 for vet
bills, for just one week of vet bills.

Please keep Mandy in your prayers, as well
as little Annie, who has been lost down in
Florida for over 3 weeks. We have had over
70 sightings of her and tonight, will be
attempting to do a chemical capture using
a dart gun.
Lauri Caron, from the OCTAGON WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND REHABILITATION
CENTER, in conjunction with the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission, (Hey, I
told ya we were involving government agencies
on this search! Captain Linda Harris has
been wonderful to us, from the Fish and Wildlife
Commission) is going to be the one shooting
the dart gun.
Lauri went out there on Friday night, an
hour and a half drive, and came face to face
with Annie at 7:30 in the evening. She only
went out to scope out the situation and find
a place to set up for tonight. SHe did not
plan on actually spotting her on Friday night.
When she saw her, it was totally unexpected
as the neighbors usually see her between
the hours of 9:30 P.M. and 6: 30 A.M.
Lauri began to pump up the dart gun. She
says you don't want to have a loaded tranquelizer
gun sitting on the front seat with you while
you are driving, so you pump it up directly
before use.
Annie saw Lauri, and began to turn to run,
giving Lauri only a shot of her little head,
WHICH SHE DID NOT TAKE OF COURSE. She is
aiming for her little butt, and since she
didn't have a clear shot, she opted to come
back tonight. THANK YOU LAURI!
I know we need funds too, but I also know
that these two other organizations are using
their own resources to help us right now,
to keep Annie from being alligator or panther
bait.
They are a 501C3 organization under the same
section code of the IRS as Small Paws Rescue
is, Animal Rescue.
They have to feed tigers and other large
animals. If you can send a few dollars to
the OCTAGON WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND REHABILITATION
CENTER, I know they would appreciate it so much,
as would I. This is what they need in the form of a wish
list, and this is how to donate to them.
Between "Never Give Up Katie" from
EARS, and Lauri Caron with the dart gun, ANNIE
you better get ready, because you ARE going
to be coming home soon!
We had estimates of as much as $5000.00 for
chemical capture from other sources. Lauri
isn't charging us a penny. She just asks
that we make a donation to her sanctuary
so she can keep feeding those tigers. I assured
her we would be doing that! After all, tigers
are people too!
This is how to donate to EARS, through their
secure online credit card site. (EARS is also under the same section of
the IRS code as Small Paws is, Animal Rescue.)
Ok, I think that's all. This has been a busy
news weekend with the millions of cans and foil puches of dog food
that has been recalled, Mandy in ICU at TAMU, and hourly updates
on Annie and her Floridian Exploits.
More as it happens. And as you know, after
all this time, now coming into our 9th Spring
with Small Paws, it is always happenin'.

Hi Robin,
Gary's surgery is back to next Tuesday, March
20, so please include the World Famous Redford
Bichons Hudad AKA super helper guy that goes
anywhere for SPR, in a prayer request. We
are praying for his quick recover and for
God to help with his surgeon, doctors and
nurses that will care for him in hospital.
He is a good egg and helps me with countless
hours at church and all my other volunteer
work.
Thanks,

Dear Robin,
I just found out that our 11 year old Bloodhound
mix has Lymphoma and has about a month, if
that to live. I am devastated. My boyfriend
is devastated. He's had him since he was
a puppy and they've done everything together.
Since I've been around, it seems that Simon
and I have become great buddies and I am
going to miss him so much. I read about your
sweet little Nicholas and I am sorry for
your loss but I thank you for sharing your
experience with everyone. It does help to
know that we are not alone in this.
Wednesday night we explained to our 3 year
old (my step-son) that Simon was going to
Heaven and that when he couldn't sleep at
night, that Simon would always be there to
listen to him if he wanted to talk. He didn't
understand but maybe I was in a way telling
myself that he would always be there for
me too. We prayed until the little one fell
asleep that night and I found out today that
for sure, he has lymphoma. Just from what
I've read on the internet, he is in stage
2. I am not sure if any of his organs have
been affected but it is killing me inside.
I feel so guilty thinking of how his death
is going to affect me. How my life will be
drastically different. I'll have no one to
go on hikes with, no one to care for (except
our 3 year old when we have him)and no one
to come to work with me and keep my company.
I won't have anyone to sleep with or pet
when I am sad or when my boyfriend is out
of town. The house will seem so empty. All
the things I once complained about, will
no longer be there, the nose prints on the
windows, the scratches on the doors.. I will
never hear him sing "Warewolves of London"
with the radio (he's a bloodhound mix so
he's a great howler or speaker). I feel bad
for complaining about those things even if
I never said them outloud. I feel so guilty.
Anyway, like you, my biggest concern is Simon
aka Boober being sick and being in pain.
I found a lump in his neck on Monday after
telling my boyfriend that I could tell he
wasn't feeling well and that something was
wrong. We rushed him tot he Vet Tuesday morning
and she told me that his health was very
poor and that it was a possibility that he
had cancer (lymphoma). Not all of his lymph
nodes were swollen just the ones in his back
knees and his neck, which gave me some sort
of hope that maybe it was just an infection
that he could and would fight off. The vet
did tests on his lymph nodes and I kept him
at work with me, always by my side, not a
second away from me as I desperately searched
the internet for more information on the
culprit for making my boober not be himself.
All the articles on the internet pretty much
confirmed the vets guess while we waited
for the results. He had all of the symptoms.
I tried everything, thinking positive, asking
for prayers and positive energies, holistic
healing; everything!! He has excessive urination
and thirst which is unlike him, he lost his
appetite which was totally odd since he was
pretty much an "oinker" when my
boyfriend and I got together. I had put him
on a diet last year and he lost 10 pounds
in 4 months and he has maintained a healthy
weight since then without me being too strict
on him with the diet. Now, I am begging him
to eat, feeding him what I can, he loves
baby carrots so I feed him those, dog treats,
anything I can that I think he will eat.
This is tearing our hearts out and its only
been 4 days. Only a few hours since the positive
diagnosis. I've been watching him close since
I noticed he wasn't acting himself. On Wednesday
his stools were normal, Thursday they were
a lot softer
and yesterday it was pretty much water droplets..
I cried the whole time hiking with him, (he
felt up to it) as I tried to tell him how
much we loved him and that he would be ok.
His third eye lid is coming out of his eye
and they are so swollen. I put eye drops
in his eyes three times a day and was hoping
for the best but unfortunately, got the worst.
We're going to try steroids (I am going to
get them after work) and see if that doesn't
help him with his strength but the vet mentioned
that with increased water intake that it
usually means an increase in calcium. With
that calcimic increase and steroids it could
lead to kidney failure. I am at a loss. It
hurts soo much. It pains me to sit here and
watch him slowly deteriorate.
If you have any advice for knowing when he's
ready to go or any advice at all since you've
been where I am now I would greatly appreciate
it. It means a lot that you shared your story,
glad I am not alone in this.
Thank you.

Hello Robin,
My neighbor, Tom Kish, is in the last stages
of pancreatic cancer. I would ask our bichon
friends to keep Tom and his wife, Marcia,
and teenage sons, Nicholas and Anthony in
their prayers. They are wonderful neighbors
and have rescued bichon named Louie. Hospice
has come to their home and there was a flood
of neighbors and friends coming in and out
to be there to support the family. I was
lucky to talk with Tom a few minutes this
evening, as he was still coherent. Please
keep Tom in prayers for a peaceful passing
and hold his dear family as they have so
much to deal with the next few days.
P. S.: They say God works in mysterious ways
- and you won't believe this one. I was paying
my water bill at my township office and saw
my an old neighbor, Carol (now, Carol is
not old as in age, she moved a few blocks
away a few years ago), driving by in their
van. Carol is a pretty fast and crazy driver
- most just get out her way. I waved her
down to say hello, and she let me know that
Tom was not doing well and I should stop
by their house to talk to him as soon as
possible. If I had not run into her on Thursday,
I would not know how quickly our friend was
failing. I had seen all the cars at their
home all week, but thought it had something
to do with their son, Nicholas and some high
school activities! Always take a minute to
say hello and not be in a rush - you never
know how important that few seconds could
be for someone else!
