Gem of the Day: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you
didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

We sent these two updates regarding several of our Small Paws Bichons, including Annie's search that is still going on down in Florida, earlier this week.

http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/feb2607.html

http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/feb2707.html

We are trying to find out if all of the members of our 'Bama Team are alright after a killer tornado went through Enterprise, earlier today.

Jeannie Rogers lives in Enterprise, AL. just two miles from the school where 15 were confirmed dead as of last night. Her home was untouched and she is alright.

If you are in Alabama and know of any of our team members who made need help for themselves or their dogs, please let us know!

Ok, I was hoping to have better news for you regarding our search for little Annie, who got away while out on a walk, and is still wearing her collar with tags, a halter, and a leash.

I know this is going to be hard to believe but these are the facts ma'am, just the facts!

Many neighbors, school kids, and other rescuers have been out in the site since Monday. Annie has been spotted no less than 50 (FIFTY) times. On many occasions we have been as close as 20-30 feet away from her, staring her right in the eyes.

We flew Vicki Nixon, ( MamaBichon@comcast.net) our Team Leader for Michigan and Wisconsin, down there on Sunday night.

Vicki has been there leading the search., each day and night of this week, sometimes working as late as 1:30 in the morning.

Yesterday, she arranged for press releases to be sent to all of the radio stations and TV news stations. Last night 17 people came out to aid in the search.

They included high school students. One of the EARS volunteers is a teacher and offered extra credit to anyone who would join the search last night. I think that was brilliant!

They also included boy scouts, members of the homeowners association, and volunteers from another animal rescue organizations. (Wait until you hear who is helping us!)

The problem is that when we see Annie, which is about every five minutes, (yes, we are seeing her OVER and OVER and OVER, all in the confines if about 2 blocks in a neighborhood, in West Rotunda, Florida,) she just takes off running like the blazes.

We have told people not to chase her. It is physiologically impossible for a human being with two tall legs to catch a little dog with four short legs. Sometimes the helpers would listen and sometimes they wouldn't. Chasing her is not going to work.

The Suncoast Humane Society has been wonderful. They lent us four live traps. Annie isn't having a part of any of those. The neighbors leave food out for the feral cats, so she isn't hungry and they water their lawns, so she isn't thirsty.

Vickie had to return home to Michigan today. She was a trooper, out there. She experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows. No one could have done anymore out there, than she did.

Now, we do have some good news and we are not giving up the search.

Many of you have heard of EARS. Emergency Animal Rescue Services. These are the people who go in after hurricanes and natural disasters to rescue the animals.

One of their folks, a wonderful and caring lady name Katy, heard of our plight. Two of their volunteers came out last night to join the search.

The great news is that Katy is taking over being in charge of the search now, that Vicki had to return home!

They are having a conference tonight and plan to be back on the site tomorrow. This is an emergency as there are alligators, (one of which Annie has already met up close and personal) bobcats that weigh 60-70 pounds, and panthers.

No one can understand how that leash hasn't gotten caught on something. If that would happen she might bark, but then again she might be bait for a wild animal, if she was caught by her leash.

The plan they have is to set a large trap, one that Annie doesn't recognize. She seems to like ONE address in this neighborhood, out there above all of the rest. She darts in and out of yards near this one address.

Yes, we have had Bichons down there on the search. This little girl doesn't care who you are, or how short white and fuzzy you are, she isn't going to come to anyone or anything.

The other thing they are checking on is seeing if any of the alligator control people might have a net or a net gun.

A tranquilizer gun would kill her as these are made for much larger animals.

We leave this search in the capable hands of the EARS volunteers. Please pray for them. I feel this group is very capable and wonderful for helping us.

Ok. back to some of the normal SPR rescue business!

Robin -

I have Morphy scheduled to go to the vet for the ear flushing next Tuesday, March 6th.

The vet gave me some high-low costs for this, and wants to know which way to go:

Low end - will put him under anesthesia, flush inner ear, clean debris out, look at ear drum. Cost $222.00

High end (recommended by vet): put under anesthesia, put on IV to keep him hydrated, pain meds during and after, monitoring, blood workup, culture the bacteria to see what this is, flush inner ear, clean debris out, look at ear drum, meds that need to go home. Cost $531.00

We get a 15% discount on top of this also. It is an in-out one day process. I will also pay a small portion, just because I fee responsible for this little guy.

Hopefully we can get this painful, messy ear infection cleared up once and for all!

Let me know which procedure to go with!

Thx,
Cheryl Hearn>

Of course we want to do what the vet recommends. I;m hoping to tell her to go for the higher treatment plan. Can you help us to help this boy?

"Trouble In Paradise"

The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery Series with a special acknowledgement to Small Paws Rescue!

In the book, under "Author's Notes & Acknowledgements", this paragraph appears:

A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."

Her business is in a lull, her husband’s lost his job and her best friend is so depressed she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes is sure that things can only get better as she loads her dogs in the car and heads for Florida to work things out.

Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested for the disappearance of her much older husband.

What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.

What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.

Of course, they are signed from Maggie and A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section of the order form!

You might want to mention it in the next newsletter you do - people getting ready for Summer events might enjoy some new logo wear.

Also, Buckwheat and Tina are featured on the first two SPR postage stamps, at just $19.99 a sheet.

Dear Robin

I am asking that my mother be included in some of the groups prayers.. Last December momma was diagnosed with a mass behind her right eye and her original doctor wanted it removed. However, I wanted to send her to the doctor who had removed the cancer from her opposite eye. Unfortunately, i had to change doctors because momma was never given a referral. We saw the doctor Tuesday and he wants to do surgery because they need to find out what kind of cancer it is. It is a risky surgery because the mass is on her optic nerve. Momma is 77 years old and has already lost one eye to cancer. Please pray that she makes it out of surgery okay. This will be on the 15th of this month.

Thank you
