Gem of the day: Reach for the stars, even if you have to stand on a cactus.
Susan Longacre

Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our online mailing list! Small Pawsers everywhere welcome you with open arms!

If you are new to reading Small Paws®, this may look as if it is coming only to you but really it is going out to fellow Small Pawsers all across our country and in several foreign countries as well. Adoption information is posted below. Turn up your speakers! We have music for you!

First of all if you did not receive the last newsletter that we sent, here it is.
http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/july19.html

IMPORTANT!!! I need to let you guys know that a few of you have been receiving a computer virus in your e-mail. IT IS NOT FROM ME SO DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT!!! It is coming from an email address called pup3@aavid.com (THIS IS NOT ME OR Small Paws®) and sports a subject line about Bichons needing help. This is not true. If you get such an email, please delete it immediately. We have contacted the folks at aavid.com, and hopefully they will be able to stop this virus, and tell us who originated it.

Next, thanks to those of you who helped us over the weekend. We found an ad for "Bichon Breeders" in the newspaper in Mo. I called and told her who we were and negotiated the price down quite a bit. I will leave here in a short while to drive over there. It is a five hour drive and I will stay the night, then load up in the morning, in order to get back to the vet's office here before they close at 5:30.

These Bichons have some serious things wrong with them. She says that several have breast tumors and one has cherry eye. One of them is 11 years old.:( There are 7 females and 2 males for sale.

The phone just rang. Another commercial kennel owner just called me. She is a friend of the first lady's and she sounds very nice. I am going to go to her place first in the morning and pick up one Bichon, two poodles, and two corgies. We will get them to their rescue folks. Then I'll go over to the first lady's place to get the 9 Bichons.

Dale is out loading up crates for me now. What a guy and what would I do without him. Somewhere in my youth or childhood, I must have done something good.:)

The bad news is...we did NOT get the Bichons from the kennel in Iowa on Saturday. We WILL get them soon, but two of them have puppies so she wouldn't let them go yet and wants them all to go together. I made a deal with her on the phone, and we will get all four out, hopefully the second week of August. Susan will go back up there to bring them on home!

With these added Bichons coming in from commercial kennels, PLUS the fact that we have now taken in over 50 Bichons into rescue since July 1, we do need your help to keep going! Come see your donation dollars at work!

Robin, Widget is doing well, his only side effect so far is a touch of diarrhea. I have a call in to Dr. Hahn and will try ro call him again and maybe send him an email too. I have to decide by Wednesday which chemo to put him on. I'm getting the impression that the COAP protocol (which my vet recommended) is easier on the dog, but that the Wisconsin protocol may have a slightly longer survival. But my vet also says it is difficult to interpret the statistics on the different protocols since the sample sizes for the trials are small.

We drove to see my Mom and Dad yesterday and he was just as alert and active as always. He played ball with us in the yard, and he is so cute when he does that, it is just unbelievable.

I seemed to have turned a corner also. The incessant crying has almost stopped and I have a bit of an appetite. I honestly think that no matter what happens now, those first 2 weeks were the WORST. I will be on overnights for 4 out of the 5 weeks in August, so I can take him to his chemotherapy.

I am working on the book "I Have Cancer Too", which is set up like my website with text interspersed with their photos. It is good therapy for me.

I continue to get wonderful emails from everywhere. That has helped a lot also.

I'll keep you updated,
Mary Lee

Hi Robin,
This is Rod up here in the wonderful state of North Dakota. I have a prayer request for a good friend on my wife and I. His name is Snookie and he is a 12 yr old jack russell terrier. He was just diagnosed with lympnoma(I think thats how you spell it). Snookie starts chemo this week for the next 4 wks and the Dr's are pretty upbeat about getting him into remission. Also if this isn't bad enough, our friend is going thru a divorce. So if you would please ask for the power of the small pawsers to pray for Snookie and Crystal it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks rod>

I am going to end today with one of the email updates sent from one of our Team Leaders, Jen, in Ohio. Jen sends the best newsletters out! You are going to love it. Try to imagine there are different colors of fonts, and cute little drawings on it too, that I can't recreate here.
If anything ever happens to me, Jen will be the one to keep in contact with you guys...to write the newsletters. Our plan of succession has Sharon Krask being the one to take over as the Executive Director, if anything were to happen to me, but Jen would be the one to write those newsletters! Ok..here it is. Enjoy! I am off to Missouri! Love,Robin

P.S. If you are a new Small Pawser and are wanting adoption information, these are the Bichons we have for adoption right now on our Petfinder's Page. Check in often as this page changes almost daily! (Bichons in waiting are adopted as newbies are added!)

Hi Everyone:)
What a great week for our team! We had 6 dogs adopted this week!!! Yes I said 6!!!! Special thanks to Bonnie & the adoption coordinators for working so hard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rocky was adopted by a woman in columbus who's mom lives with her, so he will have constant companionship:) He did really well in foster care, so we are hoping that this is a great match for him!
Sandy, as always, you are the heart of our team, thank you for everything!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mighty went to a lady named Toby also in columbus. Mighty never made it onto petfinder, but had been in 3 homes that we know of. She is a 2 yr old bichon mix, that needed to be an only dog. I have attached a pic of mighty & Toby:)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Louie went to a picnic two weeks ago & a couple that was grieving the loss of their poodle fell in love with him. They filled out an app & were approved!
This is a dog that was a day away from being PTS. He had ticks, fleas, and had surely never been groomed a day in his life. You guys remember I posted that pic of him from the Lorain county shelter? He had dread locks!
He was thrown away like garbage & I cant tell you how nice he is in spite of it. He gives kisses & is gentle and so happy to be saved. Thank you Robin & hubby!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buddy was a dog that was turned into us for biting. He has not shown any aggression in foster care and is a really sweet boy. He was being fostered by sandy d., until yesterday when he was adopted by the receptionist at sandy's vet office!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Baxter went to a nice couple from ashland, ohio that lost their bichon last month. It makes me so happy when grievers consider giving a "middle aged" dog a home:)
Linda, I know you had bax for a long time & you miss him, but its such a great feeling when they get adopted to the right person, thank you very much!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And last but not least Faygo! Faygo has been adopted by a nice lady from out of state who has another bichon with allergies & understands them. Faygo's foster mom sharon deserves a great big thanks!!!! She is driving faygo to memphis to meet his new mommy so he doesnt have to fly! Thank you sharon & angela for fostering him!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We still have 4 great dogs in Ohio available for adoption!
1. O Hare- not posted yet, but many of you met him at the bark park. He is a 2 yr old male rescued from a mill. He needs another dog in the house and is a great little guy!
2. Benjamin- 11 yr old male, rescued from living outside because they didnt want him! housebroken & very well behaved, he has alot of good years left!
3. Nicky- 11 yr old bichon / poodle mix. Still needs a dental, I will know more about him soon!
4. Doodlebug- Last but not least the doodle! 6 yr old male. WONDERFUL little dog. We need to get him adopted soon before Carole adopts him!!! LOL!!!
if you know anyone looking please tell them about these sweet boys!
Thats all for now...Have a great week! ~ Jen
