Gem of the day: When love is lost, do not bow your head in sadness; instead keep your head up high and gaze into heaven for that is where your broken heart has been sent to heal. ~Author Unknown

Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our online mailing list! Small Pawsers everywhere welcome you with open arms!

If you are new to reading Small Paws®, this may look as if it is coming only to you but really it is going out to fellow Small Pawsers all across our country and in several foreign countries as well. Adoption information is posted below. Turn up your speakers! We have music for you!

First of all if you did not receive the last newsletter that we sent, here it is.
http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/july17.html

THIS IS A SPECIAL SATURDAY EDITION OF THE Small Paws® RESCUE NEWSLETTER.

I need to come and tell you guys about a serious situations involving 12 Bichons living in two separate commercial kennels, and about a GREAT opportunity that we have to save them, but we have to act quickly. Time is of the essence because some are ill with things like breast tumors and cherry eye, and they may well have other commercial kennels looking at buying them! A few are 11 years old. This is not going to be an inexpensive proposition.:(

This emergency can't wait for Monday, so I am just coming to tell you about it now. WHY DO THESE THINGS ALWAYS SEEM TO HAPPEN ON A WEEKEND???

Ok, as you know, this morning Susan Sebring, the co-founder of Small Paws®, is orchestrating a rescue and transport of 28 commercial kennel dogs in Iowa. Only one of these is a Bichon. We are transporting the rest of them to other breed rescues and I will head there to Topeka soon, to bring the poodles back here to Tulsa for poodle rescue.

Well, we just found out that the kennel owner there has three more Bichons that she would consider selling. That would be the REST of her Bichons. If we can get these last three, that will be all of her Bichons. I went ahead and authorized this buy on faith that this is what you guys would have wanted. These prices are well under what we had been paying at auction last spring, and we will have eliminated Bichons from yet another commercial kennel, this time in Iowa. I didn't have time to come and ask you guys first. I hope that is ok.

And right after this..I mean within three minutes, we received this ad in an email that one of our volunteers found.

<BICHON FRISE BREEDERS: (7) Females, (2) males for sale. Also (1) male Yorkshire Terrier pup, 4 months-old. 573-xxx-xxxx. (Search of the phone number says it's "XXXXXX" inXXXX Mo.>

Well, I called the lady and just told her who we are. Of course she was leery and frightened, hearing that I was involved in rescue. Some of these folks are afraid that "rescue folks" are actually going to come and burn their homes down.

I quickly told her how we protect the identity of the commercial kennel owners, in order to get the dogs out and into retirement homes. I gave her the phone numbers of two commercial kennel owners who know us well, and who gave us good references.

So, as of this morning we have the opportunity to get 12 more Bichons out of 2 different commercial kennels. Yes, we will have to buy them but after we do, they are free from their lives as breeders and they will make no more pet shop puppies.

On top of that, after we pay our bills this weekend, our balance will be down to right at $3000.00 which is only about two days worth of reserve funds for us.. Bichons have been dropping from the skies due to moves, illness and divorce.

LOOK at what we just received this morning. Linda and John Stewert are on this one in Greenville, S.C.
<Hello ~
I have an 8 yr old female Bichon who I am no longer able to care for as I just had a heart attack and I also receive dialysis 4 days/week. I am fading quickly and desperately need a loving home for my girl. She is diabetic and gets 2 shots daily - she also has a touch of arthritis that she gets a pill for daily. She is great with kids and other dogs and very, very loving and friendly
I am hoping you will be able to help me find a home for her in Greenville SC which is where I live so that I may help to "wean" her away from me and into her new home.
I am currently in the hospital and my friend is sending you this email.
I would be most grateful if you could please put me in touch with a Bichon Rescue in this area.
Thank you.

Summer is just a horrible time for not for profits. I don't know why. All I can figure is vacations and people are saving for back to school?

This is traditionally a time when our funds are down and our need is great...but LORD...this is getting to be SCARY!

Little Chipper's surgery was $615.00 more than we thought it would be due to his size, and recent costs increases which were implemented at Texas A&M on July 11. We have two new pictures of Chipper in his new foster home, on his page so go seeee.

Can you help us? No amount is too small. This is a desperate situation for these 12 Bichons who are today living in a commercial kennel, waiting for us to come and get them out and into your loving homes. The temps here are over 100 degrees.I am sure they are just sweltering in the heat.

We can't get them out and vet them without funds. We really need your help. Please don't think that someone else will step up to the plate this time. If you can help us, if you are in a position to help us even a little bit...we need YOU!:)

Here is how to help.

Then, on top of all of that, (you guys I think I really need a vacation...I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and take one soon) I screwed up. Hey...they don't call me the geography queen for nothing. Obviously I can't tell the difference between West Virginia and Wisconsin and between our WI team leader, Deb Benson and our WV Team Leader Debra Graham.

We need an urgent foster home in WEST VIRGINIA not WISCONSIN. Here it is again and as of now, we are going to have to pay expensive boarding prices if we don't find someone SOON. HELP US HELP US WE CRIED! :)

<Bingo and I are basically in Charleston, WV which is fairly close to some points in KY such as Ashland (Huntington WV is just across the river from Ohio and KY). Also, I am pretty close to some cities in Ohio, like Belpre. The Virginia border is about an hour and a half southeast. I will be heading towards Morgantown on Saturday so if a volunteer there could take him I can manage that.>

Small Paws® will pay all bills associated with fostering. HELP! We need you! If you can help with either of these situations, please e-mail If you haven't yet filled out a volunteer application..that's OK! Here it is and man do we ever need you!

I also just added some new pictures of my trip to Florida, to pick up little Chipper. Scroll down to see them trying to make him fit in that sherpa bag for the plane!

Next, I have just devastating news about our South California Team Leader, Jeanine Curchione's own Bichon, Bijou. We are all deeply saddened at this news of how quickly this illness took their beloved Bichon, Bijou.

July 16, 2003 - In front of Judge Anthony Barone at Town of Evans Court, the SPCA tonight received possession of the remaining 33 animals seized from an Angola, NY residence June 24. Of the 125 animals seized, 92 of the dogs were surrendered to the SPCA at an earlier date. The other animals include parrots, miniature horses, cats, prairie dogs, chickens, and others. Tonight's arraignment was the rescheduled date after defendant Carol Karter failed to appear in court at the original arraignment Monday,
July 7.

Cairn Terrier
Chihuahua
Rough-coated Collie
Dachshund
Doberman Pinscher
Golden Retriever
Great Pyrenees
Japanese Chin

I guess that's all for now. Please pray for us. We are starting to feel overwhelmed at all of this activity. Thank you guys for listening and for helping us to help these precious Bichons. Love,Robin

Letter From Your Pet In Heaven
Dedicated to Jeanine and Liz's Bijou.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say,
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from the Bridge. Here I dwell with God above,
Here there's no more tears of sadness. Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight,
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you...in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years,
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night..."My day was not in vain".

And now I am contented...that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along, I made somebody smile.

God says: "If you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go."

When you're walking down the street with me on your mind,
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go...from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going...you're coming here to me.
