First Square of panel:
--With H-afghan hook and white yarn, ch 38
loosely.
--Work rows 1 and 2 of basic afghan stitch.
Rep row 2 for 28 more rows for a total of
30 rows. To bind off last row, sl st across
as follows: skip first bar, *insert hook
in next bar, yo hok and loosely draw through
bar and lp on hook at the same time; rep
from *across,ch 1 turn.
--(wrong side) change to h-crochet hook,
work 1 sc in each sl st (37 sc), ch1 turn
--work 2 more rows of sc having ch1 turn
at end of each row, at end of third sc row
change to next color, ch1 turn:
Second square: change back to afghan hook;
--Retaining all lps on hook, draw up a lp
in each sc, inserting hook through both lps
of st (38 lps on hook). To complete row,
work off lps in following manner: yo hook;draw
through first lp on hook, *yo hook, drw through
next 2 lps on hook; rep from * until 1 lp
remains on hook.
--To complete second square, rep 30 rows
of first pattern.
--After sl st row, change to crochet hook
and change back to white yarn. Complete sc
rows as on first square.
--Change to afghan hook for last square of
panel.
--Repeat rows 1-30 of second panel, bind
off on last row with sl st but do not cut
yarn at end.
--SC around entire panel putting three sc
in each corner. This completes panel 1.
--Make 2 more panels with color changes as
wanted, be sure that all sc rows are the
same color (in this example white) and colored
squares placed according to desired outcome.
--Border between panels:
Work this on the right hand side of first
and second panel only:
--With crochet hook, attach white to upper
right hand corner of right side of completed
panel. Do one row of sc in each sc along
edge. End off.
__FINISHING
--Carefully line up panels and sew together
using an overcast or whip stitch,
Border:
Join white yarn with crochet hook on eny
edge. Do 2 rounds of sc puting 3 sc in each
corner Join. Cut white and weave in end.
Embroidery:
Embroider from diagrams. One cross stitch
is worked over 1 afghan st. Charts are based
on a 20 by 20 square area. Count upright
bars for placement. skip 8 bars on the outside
before starting pattern and then skip whatever
number of squares are blank. For example
when starting the Bichon, I start at the
far left bottom corner, on the 6th row from
the bottom and the 9th upright bar from the
left. I usually place all my bars going from
lower right to upper left for the entire
graph ( I call this setting it in) and then
I go back and place the other half of the
x from lower left to upper right. Remember
that the back is visible so you need to be
careful and not loop big amounts of yarn
from space to space. Don't tie knots, leave
a tail and then weave it in under the stitches
when you are done. If you have a large space
between stitches, like the eyes and nose,
it is better to cut and weave it than to
just pull it over to the next space.
