Gem of the Day: "If children have the
ability to ignore all odds and percentages,
then maybe we can all learn from them. When
you think about it, what other choice is
there but to hope? We have two options, medically
and emotionally: give up, or Fight Like Hell.”
Lance Armstrong

Here I am holding little BonBon. She is is
11 weeks old. She has a grade 5-6 heart murmur.
Her eyes have "the look."
Sadly she is only one of THREE puppies that
we got into rescue yesterday with severe
heart murmurs.
Now highlighted on Small Paws Ebay! Thank you Debra Graham!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it
is. http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/jan3007.html
If you sense any stress with the writing
of this important newsletter, you would be
correct.
I've got so much to tell you that I don't
even know where to start.
We have so many truly urgent medical situations
going on right now, as if they all hit us
all at once, that I feel like we are having
to triage them and say, "Ok, You, You
and You are dying, you have to be first.
Ok, You have a bladder stones. I know it
hurts but you aren't dying. You have to wait."
I'm trying to keep it together long enough
to be able to tell you about what has happened
and to find a way to keep three precious
female puppies from croaking on us, as in
assuming room temperature.
I was supposed to drive over today, Thursday,
to Missouri, to pick up 11 Bichons from a
commercial kennel. 7 adults and 4 puppies,
and bring them on home to Small Paws.
The kennel owner originally wouldn't let
me come any day but Thursday, and I knew
one of the puppies we were supposed to get
had already been rejected by the broker for
"havin' some sort of heart trouble.".
As weather forecasts began to predict snow
and ice for Northeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern
Mo., I knew we would be racing against the
clock and that if I didn't go on over there
early, it would be yet another week.
I called her and told her that the weather
was turning bad and she might be stuck housing
and paying to feed those Bichons for another
week if I didn't come right now.
She agreed and I left Tulsa Tuesday night
and thank God I did.
Wednesday morning, as I was loading the dogs
from their commercial kennel cages in their
sundowner building, into the rental SUV,
the snow began to come down. Ten miles into
my trip back home, it began to REALLY COME
DOWN in a blowing, blinding snow storm.
Folks, you know me. I do NOT like to drive
in this stuff.
I didn't have Glory, the 1998 Volvo wagon
with me, along with her steel cage that Volvo
has around all of their cars.
That steel cage keeps you ANY BABIES YOU
ARE CARRYING IN THE BACK from being squashed
or worse if someone else hits you.
Glory is still in the car hospital, diagnosed
with a dead heat coil in her dash, dead shocks
in her hatchback door, and a mostly dead
timing belt and fan belt, in her tummy ,I
guess.
I rented a Ford Explorer which has rear wheel
drive and is completely useless in this ice
and snow but that was all they had available
on Tuesday afternoon.
I sent this message to some of the Heart
Murmur Transportation Team, (some work during
the week and aren't available except on weekends)
and to Lucy at Texas A&M, last night.
<Hello Heart Murmur Team and Lucy at A&M.
Well, it's worse than we first thought. Doc
says there are THREE puppies from today's
mill rescue with heart murmurs. 2 grade 5-6
and 1 grade 4-5 and the roads are slick and
hazardous, here where I live, in Tulsa.
I barely made it home today from MO. with
my life and no I am not kidding. I passed
one fatality accident and saw two other SUV's
like the one I was driving, (the rental.
Glory is in the Volvo hospital with a dead
heating coil in the dash, bad hatch shocks,
and a mostly dead timing and fan belt) on
their roofs on the side of the road.
Another one which looked like an SUV was
upside down in a pond with only the wheels
showing. The firemen were carrying a stretcher
on one of those metal stands down to it.
It was a fatality.
I turned off the CD player. I decided hearing
the Signature Sound gospel quartet singing
about "The City by the Crystal River",
"Beulah Land," and "The Other
Side of Heaven" was probably not what
I should have been listening too right then.
I have some pics of the babies. I am just
wiped out tonight and will get a newsletter
together by tomorrow afternoon to raise funds
for them, We will need about $7500.00-$9000.00
just for the three to have surgery at A&M,
not to mention the other 9 adults at Docs
who have various other wonderful problems.
I know Don Rorschach from Irving TX and Patty
Shearer, from Houston, will help to drive.
I just don't yet know how to get them down
that way with this bad weather and icy roads.
LUCY, we have incoming wounded. Three of
em. Probably this weekend.
I don't even know if they are male or female
yet. This one has sick eyes. You know the
look.>
We named them in honor of Valentine's Day.

Here I am holding little BonBon. She is is
11 weeks old. Here eyes have "the look."

Dr. Russell is holding baby BonBon.

Candy and Truffles are 10 weeks old. One
has a grade 4-5 and one has a grade 5-6.
Depending on the size of the hole, a grade
4-5 can actually be worse than a grade 5-6.
When I got there to that kennel in MO., and
felt of of little BonBon's heart, I knew
she had about a grade 5-6 heart murmur. I
began asking the lady "WHERE IS HEW
MAMA AND HEW DADDY?"
The answer was that her Mama was out already
out in my truck, already loaded to go home
to Tulsa . But her DADDY was the only male
she had in this kennel. After I left, there
would have been three females and this one
male.
I told her that the male could have been
participatory in passing down this heart
murmur problem.
She wouldn't have any of hearing that. She
had been using this male for years and said
she had had no problems.
She told me who this male was and I know
where he came from and his line.
He is my Romeo's son. (Romeo now lives with Loretta, one
of our Small Pawsers, and he has the home
I always dreamed of for him, including car
rides and occasional ice creams.)
There was also the problem of a one year
old female who was remaining in her cage.
We were supposed to have gotten her, but
there she sat still in her cage.
It seems that her first litter had all died,
but they "thought they'd give 'er another
go 'round."
I KNEW that male was probably passing down
that heart murmur gene, and she wasn't going
to let go of him for love nor money. Or would
she?
Folks, we are NOT buying dogs from the mills
right now because they are giving too many
of them to us for free.
But I knew the chances were great that even
if this male hadn't thrown HM pups before,
he carried the gene. If he wasn't throwing
them directly, he was passing them down to
his pups, and somewhere down the line, after
the pet shop. someone was going to be heartbroken.
This Daddy Dog was her ONLY MALE. She had
three remaining females.
She just wasn't going to let go of that Daddy
Dog. She was convinced it was the MOTHER
who had this gene, as she had just bought
her, and this was her first litter with her,
and one of her pups had a heart murmur.
I told her I forgot something in the car
and went outside of the sundowner building
where her small kennel was housed, and back
out into the 17 degree temps. The wind was
howling and I pulled my collar up around
my face. I acted like I was rearranging kennels
in the car, but in reality I was out there
just praying out loud.
"In the name of the Father God, pleas
help me to get that male out of there. He
is probably carrying this gene. We can pay
to fix these puppies from him in the future
or we can get him out now and snip snip that
little problem. In the name of the Father
God, dear Lord Jesus I need You now.
I didn't have a clue how I was going to leave
there with that Daddy Dog but after praying,
I felt strongly that I was not going to be
leaving him.
I got out the SPR checkbook, and sat back
down in the driver seat. The heat felt good
(Something Glory has been lacking for a while
now) and everyone was warm. I wrote out the
check for $500.00 to the kennel owner, as
I listened to the snow storm road reports.
I put the check in my pocket and walked back
inside.
She asked me if SPR was related to PETA and
I told her NOT EVEN MAYBE. I consider those
people to be terrorists and we couldn't be
more different.
Many of the commercial kennel owners think
that all rescue people are like PETA, opening
dog cages at dog shows allowing the dogs
to escape the buildings and to run into traffic
and to be killed by cars. PETA's thinking
is that it is better for a dog to be dead
than to ever be confined. They "just
want them to be free."
God help any of their husbands if they ever
decide they want them to "just be free."
I'm sorry people, but in my opinion, that
is just sick.
She asked me to tell her about Small Paws
and why everyone makes such a bid deal about
it, kennel owners and rescuers alike.
I told her about the prayer aspect of this
organization. I told her about how Sheryl
Street's home was saved by the wildfires
in Utah, after we prayed for her, while all
of her neighbors homes were black and fallen.
I told her about all of you, thousands of
you in 22 countries, including Communist
China, and how though we are of many faiths,
we all pray to same loving God.
She said, "Many faiths?"
I told her that I am a Christian but that
we have Jews, Muslims, Hindu and other faiths
represented as well. We all pray to the same
God.
She told me that she was a Christian too.
It was my opening. I told her, XXXX, if there
is a chance that this Daddy Dog is carrying
this gene, you don't want to be putting out
an imperfect product. You don't want to have
to explain to God one day, why you caused
such heartache, if there is even a chance
he is carrying this HM gene.
And I told her that the one year old female
in the cage wasn't ever going to have live
puppies. I asked her why put the dog and
herself through that again?
I pulled out the check and asked her if $500.00
would allow her to do the right thing and
send Daddy Dog with me, along with the one
year old female.
She shook her head and said she just couldn't
sell him, as he was her only male. She asked
me what she would do if she couldn't find
another male to buy?
She had already told me what I already knew,
that Bichons aren't bringing much money right
now. (Did she think this was an accident? Oh contraire.)
I told her if she couldn't find another male,
to call me and I would come back for those
three remaining females. I told her that
she would be out of a breed that isn't making
any money and she would still have $500.00
in her pocket.
She wasn't going to be easy to convince.
She wanted to call her husband at work and
ask him. I went back out to the truck to
wait as road conditions worsened and the
temps began to fall.
It started to snow and I heard on the satellite
radio that road conditions in MO and OK were
becoming slick and hazardous.
Dear Jesus. Help me. Please turn her heart.
I went back in and she was still on the phone
and she was shaking her head no, while talking
to her husband.
She hung up and said the husband didn't think
Daddy Dog should go, as they needed him.
I asked her to pray with me to make sure
that God wanted her to keep Daddy Dog. We
were two Christians and where two or more
are gathered, well, I prayed and just asked
God to let her know in her heart which was
the right thing to do.
Tears began to flow in both of us as she
turned and went to his cage. Daddy Dog was
coming home to Small Paws, as was the one
year old female. I left her holding the lifeless
check in her hands, instead of these two
precious Bichons.
Imagine my stunned shock when Dr. Russell
called me after I had dropped everyone off
at the clinic. There wasn't just one heart
murmur. There were three.
Guess who sired babies Candy and Truffles.
You got it. Daddy Dog. Thank you God! Thank
you God!
So, on top of us needing $7500-$9000 to save
these three babies, we also need to recoup
$500.00 with which we bought the last two.
The others, the eight adults and one puppy,
all have things wrong with them, too.
These are a couple of pictures from yesterday's
kennel rescue in Mo. I am thanking God that
I got home with my life on those roads. I
drove past someone who wasn't as lucky.

This Explorer didn't hold NEAR the number
of crates that Glory does.

Stacked up at Docs in Tulsa

The fourth puppy has something wrong and
may lose an eye. We will get her to Dr Gwen,
the Eye Guy.

One of the adult females has a cherry eye
that will have to be surgically repaired.
The kennel owner had been putting drops in
it to try to cure it. :(

One of the females seems to have a lameness
problem in her back end. You see the one
swollen outside thigh and the red marks inside
of the other.
This is Candy and Truffle's Mom, with those
two babies. Daddy Dog is their Daddy.

The one year old female that got out by the
hair of her chinny chin chin.
Daddy Dog.
I know we have some other serious medical
needs and surgeries that we need to raise
funds for too, but these three puppies have
to go to the top of the list right now. I
will try to get the other needs out to you
but give me a few days.
I'm going to try to rent a 4 wheel drive
and somehow start out either tonight towards
Dallas with these babies, or in the morning
at the latest.
These three girls alone will cost $7500.00-$9000.00
to vet and the other 9 at the Tulsa clinic,
all seem to have something extra wrong, as
well.
We have these two matching donation challenges
for you for babies BonBon, Truffles and Candy.
If you have been thinking of donating but
haven't yet, now is the time. These three
lives depend on it and no I am not kidding.
The first challenge is from ever faithful

To: Pup3@aol.com
Hi, Robin. Matteo (Baby Matt) wanted me to
write to you right away. He said to me this
afternoon after I told him about these puppies,
“Member, Mama, before I came to you, Small
Paws saved me and Ashley and Miller from the BAD PLACE and we were sooooo sick
in our hearts? And member, Mama, how you
always tell me that before you knew I was
gonna be yours, other good people at Small
Paws sent money so that me and Ashley and
Miller could get our boo-boo hearts fixed?
And member, Mama, that you said whenever
there was another fluff that needed THEIR
boo-boo heart fixed you would help Small
Paws get money, cause without me, your life
just wouldn’t be the same? So Mama, YOU gotta
tell the Small Paws people. You gotta tell
them how special the boo-boo heart dogs are
and we gotta help ‘em get their hearts fixed,
too. We just gotta!!”
So on behalf of my Matteo, I am issuing a
$100 Matching Donation Challenge for these
3 heart murmur puppies.
Love and Licks from Matteo!

"Trouble In Paradise"
The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery
Series with a special acknowledgement to
Small Paws Rescue!
In the book, under "Author's Notes &
Acknowledgements", this paragraph appears:
A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for
their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons
from the most unspeakable circumstances.
Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents,
volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous
with their time and money on behalf of some
of the most loving and trusting creatures
on earth. They are the embodiment of the
idea of "walking the walk."
Her business is in a lull, her husband’s
lost his job and her best friend is so depressed
she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes
is sure that things can only get better as
she loads her dogs in the car and heads for
Florida to work things out.
Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for
this dog-loving woman who seems to be a crap
magnet. Shortly after arriving at the condo
she’ll soon be forced to sell in the name
of solvency, her wealthy best friend is arrested
for the disappearance of her much older husband.
What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle
of things, naturally. With the help of her
Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled
hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric
party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an
amateur detective. She’s not making any friends
in the local police department because she
keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes.
While trying to help her trophy-wife friend,
Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and
extortion that have the bad guys trying to
beat her up or blow her up or just plain
shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even
suggests she hire her former boyfriend as
extra security. Yikes.
What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship
will keep you on the edge of your seat. That
is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while
laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves
that everyday life can be not only exciting,
but hilarious.
Of course, they are signed from Maggie and
A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put
your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section
of the order form!

Hi Robin,
I've created a new section in our CafePress
shop - The logo is different, lighter, and
might appeal to more of our members.
You might want to mention it in the next
newsletter you do - people getting ready
for Summer events might enjoy some new logo
wear.
Also, Buckwheat and Tina are featured on
the first two SPR postage stamps, at just
$19.99 a sheet.

Maybe it will help to raise some funds for
when it's raining Bichons.

I'll issue any and all donation challenges
that come in. This is an urgent need.
Please pray for me to be able to find a vehicle
to rent that can actually drive in this stuff,
and for our safety as we head down to Dallas
on streets of white, with fluffs in tow,
with hearts of pure gold. All My Love, Robin

Hi, are there any internist in Indiana? My
Honey Girl spent the weekend up until today
(tues) on an IV at the vets to flush her
liver. I'm praying for a miracle. Tonight
she acts funny like she is drugged or something.
She is getting thinner and thinner, any help
you can give me for a referal will be much
appreciated. Also, I have been reading your
news letters and I think once I get her straightened
out and my gallbladder take out (Feb 2) I
may become a foster or even adoptive mom.
Your organization is the greatest. Thank
you for the help and I need all the prayers
for her. Please ask your prayer warriors
to put her in their prayers. God Bless, Judy

Robin,
I was reading on the newsletter about your
senior having a mass on her larynx. I am
going through the same thing with my little
Abigail. I adopted her 3 years ago and she
has been a treasure to us. She did not feel
well Friday and was very lethargic. We took
her to our Vet who gave us antibiotics and
a stomach relaxer as she was vomiting. By
Monday morning, she was still not feeling
well and had vomited everytime she tried
to eat rice. I took her back to the Vet,
who took X-rays and discovered something
in her larynx. We have an appointment with
an emergency Vet hospital today for an endoscopy
or possible surgery. I am sure this will
be costly. But as she is like our child,
I am happy to pay for it. All I am asking
is for everyone to pray for my little girl.
She has not eaten for 3 days and I am sure
after this experience, she will enjoy a nice
bowl of puppy ice cream. When we adopted
her, her name was Utah Ursula as she and
all her siblings were named after every state.
Thank you all for your prayers,
Marianne T.>
