How We got Started

I want to let those of you who do not know yet, know how we got started, eight years ago, back in 1998. WOW! How time flies!

How We Got Started

At the time, my rescue partner Susan Sebring, at IRsusan@aol.com and I had first applied to join an existing bichon rescue organization.

We both got a form letter back, telling us that rescue work took more than just a good heart and that at that time we were deemed to have been not suitable for rescue work. (Yes, that's what the letter really said...)

Though we were discouraged at first, we decided if we couldn't go to the mountain...we would move the mountain to us, and thus Small Paws™ Rescue was born.

We found out since that time, many of our volunteers also received that same form letter, telling them that they too, were not suitable for rescue work.

We found out that we were in great company! Even Linda and John Stewert received this same letter...and now look what John and Linda have done as invaluable volunteers for these Bichons and Small Paws Rescue!
They have now fostered over 50 special needs Bichons! Come see the newest additions and turn up your speakers!
Small Paws® Rescue: The Wall of Fame

I am glad we all didn't give up and went on so that Small Paws® Rescue was born! We have been up and running ever since!

We broke all of the rules because we truly felt led to take in the old, sick and dying....the dogs the other bichon rescue groups were not able to take. We took in Bichon mixes. We even took in the most abused Puppy Mill dogs...
Small Paws® Rescue: All About Puppy Mills

We put rescue dogs on commercial airplanes to new homes, rather than putting them to sleep...
Small Paws® Rescue: Shipping Dogs on Airlines...The REAL Scoop!

We used inexperienced volunteers and trained them as we went. We have always said it is better to have an inexperienced, but willing to learn, warm body willing to rescue a Bichon from a shelter...then to leave it there to die.

Yes, we were THE RESCUE RENEGADES and we soon learned that many people had been waiting to support an organization like Small Paws for quite some time! We could see that we were indeed doing what God had wanted us to do by the way the dogs...were affecting the people who were adopting them!

Now Small Paws® Rescue has over 800 volunteers and over 6000 supporters in 20 countries, making us the largest rescue organization for Bichons (and Bichon Mixes) in existence today.

We are an organization who believes in the miracle healing power of prayer!
