We have very important news tonight regarding
both Irving from Irving, and precious little
Buttercup, our 41st Heart Murmur Baby.

Irving from Irving was nothing but skin and
bones and was carrying around two HUGE bladder
stones. No wonder he was dripping urine and
shaking from pain. I asked if our volunteers
were 100% sure this is the same dog in the
first picture, and they assured me that they
are 100% sure that it is.:(
Meet 7 week old "Buttercup". She
is our 41st Heart Murmur Baby. She has a
grade 6 heart murmur. Because she weighs
only 2 pounds she is too small to be coiled at Texas A&M.
They can do the crack the chest open surgery.
(ligation)
We also have to raise funds for her in full,
before we can send her into a $2700.00 surgery.
This has never happened as far as I know,
in the history of Small Paws. Eight years
is a long time, and I think I remember pretty
well, each critical case we have had. We
haven't had two at once, that were this critical.
This is the update on little Irving. He is
fighting for his life tonight, but the specialists
there feel confident they can pull him through
this, with your help. He tried to croak on
us this morning around 8:00 A.M. He gave
it his best shot, but your prayer angels
protected him.
We sent out the prayer request and he rallied
a bit right after that, and no I am not kidding.

Hi Robin and Bonnie,
Irving started going south on us this morning,
so I rushed him to the Animal Diagnostic
Clinic in Dallas to see Dr. Caeley Melmed,
Diplomate, ACVIM, Internal Medicine. (Normal
people may hang clothes from that hook over
the rear door of their car, but now I know
that its REAL purpose is for hanging an IV
bag!) Irving's blood protein and albumin
levels were dangerously low, and he was refusing
to eat. Dr. Melmed performed an ultrasound
right away.

Dr. Melmed said that Irving's kidneys are
obstructed because the stones in his bladder
are so huge that urine can't flow into his
bladder. She said those stones have probably been
forming for the last year! Dr. Melmed also
said that Irving is in horrific pain, especially
through his back and that's why he won't
eat. It just hurts too much. She is going
to put him on a morphine drip, but she said
that will only dull the pain.
She is going to stabilize Irving for the
rest of the day and then take him across
the hall to the Dallas Veterinary Surgical
Center first thing tomorrow morning to have
the stones removed. While he's under anesthesia
for that, they're also going to insert a
feeding tube into Irving's neck so they can
get some nutrition into him right away.
I have attached a PDF of the estimate for
Irving's treatment at the Animal Diagnostic
Clinic,
See PDF File
Download Free Adobe Acrobat Reader to be
able to see the PDF File
The low estimate is $1,942.50 and the high
estimate is $2,494.50. This is only for the sonogram and other tests,
to get him stabilized, and for 4-5 days of
ICU, depending on what he needs.
The Dallas Veterinary Surgical center is
supposed to call me to give me an estimate
for the surgery to remove the stones; I'll
notify you as soon as I hear from them. (Editor's
Note. They called. Estimate for bladder removal
surgery and insertion of temporary feeding
tube into the neck is an additional $2000.00.
This is the same Surgical center that saved
this little guy, remember Casper? The little
one attacked by a big dog in Dallas, and
was left to die in the road for three days,
paralyzed, unable to get up?
This is a movie of little Casper after intricate
spinal cord surgery. Watch him get up and walk! He is 100% healed
now!
Once the surgery is done, Irving will go
back across the hall to Dr. Melmed where
he will be in ICU with 24 hour monitoring
(which is where he'll be tonight, too). The
bill for the last two days at my vet came
to $373.32 (that's after a 30% discount).
Dr. Melmed said that she expects Irving to
make a full recovery! I have attached a few more photos that Vicki
and I took today -- they're pretty bad, so
prepare yourself. Irving is hunched over
because his back hurts so much. Marilyn>
So, we have little Irving, going under the
knife tomorrow morning, first thing. This
will cost us about $4400.00 to save this
life.
I have always said that we can always make
more money but we can never make more life.
But Irving's story doesn't stop here. Small
Pawser Bayn Carlson spoke to some folks there
today at the Irving City Hall.
"One thing I didn't mention to you today,
Mr. XXX told me that all but one of the city
counsel members are dog owners and lovers.
If and when this hits the press, it will
be very hard or very easy to pass a bond
election for 6 mil. toward a new shelter
facility in Irving. The city counsel will
also be asking for resignations. This will
be Irving's legacy, no matter what his outcome.
We're praying everything goes as planned
tomorrow. Regardless of what happens though,
God is using this dog to help ease the plight
of so many more."

To read about the whole unbelievable story
of Irving from Irving, click here.
http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/august2606a.html
Then, as if keeping Irving from Irving from
assuming room temperature isn't enough, we
have something else that is very serious,
with which to deal.
As you know, Buttercup is our 41st Heart
Murmur Baby.
I had hoped we would be able to grow little
Buttercup a while, so she could have the
coil surgery at Texas A&M. instead of the crack the chest open surgery.
Cardiologist, Dr. Sonya Gordon, called me
today from Texas A&M.
Rosie Welch, our volunteer and Buttercup's
foster Mama, took Buttercup into A&M
today for the preliminary tests on her heart.
Ruh Roh.
Even when we bring them in as emergencies
on the weekends, they don't usually do the
actual surgeries until Wednesday or Thursday.
Dr. Gordon said there is no time to waste.
Buttercup has to have this surgery ASAP because
her heart is so enlarged it has no where
else to go.
Growing her, she said, would have been impossible.
Her heart would have outgrown her chest before
we could have grown her by even a few ounces.
She also has a slight mitral valve leak which
adds another layer to this equation.
They are taking her into surgery with the
soft tissue surgeons at 9:00 AM in the morning.
They will crack her chest open and sew up
the hole in her little heart.
We won't know anything until later that afternoon.
Please pray for her. Her surgery will cost
between $2000.00 and $2700.00. The last five
we have done have been around the $2700.00
range. We haven't seen $2000.00 bills from
A&M in quite some time.
There is no way we could have prepared for
Irving's condition or for his bill. We can't
help him without your help. We have $2400.00
raised so far towards his care. A good Samaritan
donated $1000.00 today for him, at Marilyn's
vet's office.

See Vet Bills Paid for August of 2006 Totaling

Tonight, Dave Hagadorn paid these vet bills,
totalling $6,371.83 for just one week's worth
of vetting for our Bichons. Notice the bill
for $2424.95 to Grove Port Animal Hospital
in Ohio. This is for the five puppy mill
dogs that we got in about 3 weeks ago in
just horrid condition. At the time, (AUGUST
ARGG!) we never did raised even 1/2 of what
was needed to pay their vet bills. We tried
several times, but between e-mail delivery
problems, AUGUST, vacations, AUGUST, tuition,
and AUGUST, well, we just didn't raise what
we needed for them at the time.
We have a challenge for you tonight for $200.00.

Dear Small Pawsers.
I am a faithful Small Pawser, and I want
to share something with you.
I see the wonderful wonderful large donations
to Small Paws and I feel embarrassed to donate
my $5, or $10. It is not enough I say to
myself. Do you feel that way sometimes?
Then it hit me. That $5 or even $1 might
just be the money that puts the fund over
the top to help. That $5, may just be enough
to finish paying so a fluff can get surgery.
Or that $1 may just add up to a nice bath
for a baby that has never had a bubble bath.
So I finally realized that Yes! my dollars
help. And your dollars will too.
We all know that Robin pinches a penny until
Abe cries, so she can help those babies.
But sometimes there are no pennies for her
to pinch. So hey, Let's save up some pennies,
dimes, anything. Because now you know what
I know. Every cent helps.

Vicki,
The kitten I adopted at Irving Animal Shelter
has URI which is highly contagious. I am
doing everything in my power to prevent my
older cats from catching it. I don't know
why it didn't register with me when I was
at the vet's office last Thursday that it
was contagious and that there was a chance
it could be passed on to my other two. I
brought her to the Emergency Vet yesterday
afternoon as she was not eating and appeared
to be getting worse.
I contacted my vet this morning and he said
I may need to force her to eat with a syringe
or rub it on her gums. They can only give
her Antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection.
The URI is a virus that their immune system
needs to fight off. Therefore, it is imperative
that they eat and stay hydrated in order
to be healthy enough to fight it off. Please
pray that my cats don't catch it and the
kitten gets well soon.
Oh, the two dogs are safe as it can't be
passed on to dogs or humans.
I guess getting a kitten was not such a good
idea. :(
P.S. Please put this in your next news letter
as I believe in the Power of Prayer.
Thanks, Linda.Kilby@comcast.net>

I hope I'm not out of line here but it seems
that so many on this list know the Lord Jesus
Christ as their Savior so I will take a chance
and ask if you will pray for a young woman
in our church named Cheryl. As I was typing
this a call came in that they are taking
her to the ER. She has a very rare cancer
that I can't even pronounce let alone spell.
She has two small boys (5th and 2nd grades
I think) and she is dying slowly and painfully.
While the boys do have a father he has another
family and will not take them when she goes.
Since there is no other family they will
end up in the system. Unfortunately often
the "system" is not as good for
children as it is for dogs. (Please do not
be offended if you are a social worker or
a foster parent. I am speaking in generalities
and do not mean that this criticism applies
to everyone!)
Thanks for your patience, understanding and
prayers.>
Always remember.
No matter what you have done, or where you
have been, God loves you more than anyone
else ever has and more than anyone else ever
will.
