We are about half way there in raising what funds we need, and these Bichons can not thank you, who have responded, enough! SO I will thank you for them!

We have another challenge for Buttercup, from someone you will want to meet, the good Samaritans (they are now official SPR volunteers!) who saved little Buttercup and drove her all the way to Tulsa from Arkansas, but first, I need to tell you all what happened today in Irving Tx., regarding little Irving from Irving .

This is what we put in the last two newsletters about Irving.

Irving from Irving, Tx. He has been shaven down except for his head. He also appears to have a urinary tract problem as he drips. He is VERY skinny. He is scared and shaking like a leaf.

Irving was brought to the shelter by the city, when someone called them and asked them to come out to pick him up and they did.

When we heard about him, of course we wanted to get him out of there as soon as we could because he was dripping urine and shaking, which is a sign of pain, but the shelter was telling us that he couldn't be released to rescue until NEXT THURSDAY. HELLO?

I was certain that he had bladder stones, and needed immediate medical care.

We sent one of our volunteer's, Linda Kilbe, over there and they wouldn't release Irving to her, nor did they think he needed medical care while in the shelter. They said he was healthy and ready for adoption. :(

Then Vicki Furstenburg, the North Texas Co-Team Leader, tried to talk to the shelter. No go.

Finally, Marilyn Brewster, the other co-team leader just marched right on up there. I told Marilyn that if anyone could get Irving from Irving sprung, it was Marilyn Brewster!

If they had said no to Marilyn, today, Glory and I were going to be headed south for a road trip.

What Marilyn saw today sickened her and still, they were not going to release this dog until next Thursday.

If they had waited until Thursday, we wouldn't have had to worry about it because he would have most certainly assumed room temperature by then.

The clincher of the whole story is this. The shelter told us that their veterinarian examined Irving from Irving, yesterday, and deemed him to be healthy and ready for adoption!

Marilyn Brewster saw those vet records and what the vet had written on the back of the cage card. It said "HW neg. Given Vaccinations, applied flea treatment." (I still can't believe they vaccinated a dog that was this ill.)

On a separate card attached to his cage, it said something like (Marilyn is going from her memory here) "I'm ready for adoption. I've had my shots and am HW neg. I'm healthy and ready to go and have been checked out by the vet."

Marilyn said that this was the standard card on the cages of the dogs there.

You need to prepare yourselves. This is the condition we found Irving from Irving in today, at the Irving shelter. I know it's hard to see, but you need to know about little Irving. He is one of us now. His last name is Small Paws. He is only two years old.

Irving from Irving is nothing but skin and bones and is carrying around two HUGE bladder stones. No wonder he was dripping urine and shaking from pain. I asked if our volunteers were 100% sure this is the same dog in the first picture, and they assured me that they are 100% sure that it is.:(

This is a report on Irving from Irving now. He is now in ICU at OUR vet's office, and I assure you it is not because he is healthy and ready to be adopted. I am praying that funds come in for his care and upcoming bladder stone surgery because he is ours now!

Hi Robin and Bonnie,

Here is a photo of Irving.

As you can see, he’s extremely emaciated and barely weighs anything – 8.2 pounds to be exact. My vet examined him and took x-rays which revealed two VERY LARGE (each one is 2 ½ cm x 3 cm) stones (probably struvite) in Irving’s bladder, and they’ve been there for quite some time. I’d be willing to bet that most of Irving’s weight is coming from those horrible stones! Needless to say, he has a bladder infection, as well. The good news is that Irving tested negative for heartworms, ehrlichia, and lymes disease (which is no small miracle since he was covered with ticks). My vet estimated that he is about 2 years old.

Irving is anemic, malnourished and dehydrated, but they’ve already started working on stabilizing his condition. He is in the ICU ward with an IV for fluids, and they’ve added potassium, antibiotics, and buprenorphine (for pain) to his IV bag. They said the pain meds will take effect very quickly. They’re going to keep a close eye on him all weekend.

Since the stones are so large, there’s no chance of them moving into Irving’s urethra and causing blockage.
That will give him a couple of days to continue to stabilize before they operate to remove the stones (he also needs to be neutered and have his teeth cleaned while they’re at it). They have scheduled the surgery for Tuesday, August 29th.

Irving is a very, very sweet little guy! He never complained or snapped or even growled the whole time my vet was working on him. He is so grateful to be out of the shelter. The shelter workers wanted to KEEP HIM until next Thursday before letting rescue take him (and then they were going to euthanize him on Friday if no one came to get him)! I assured them that no one would possibly adopt a dog in that condition (emaciated and dribbling urine), and that he was obviously in pain and needed immediate medical attention.

(Editors Note: Marilyn told me to tell you that "I would be sure to let everyone know that the supervisor wasn’t going to let us have him today until the kind-hearted receptionist at the shelter called her and convinced her to do so! I don’t have that kid’s name, but he’s the real hero here!")

Irving is now in ICU at Cityview Animal Hospital, 6194 Overton Ridge Boulevard, Fort Worth, Texas, 76132. Their phone number is (817) 294-7733. He is resting as comfortably as possible, and they’re giving him the very best of care.

Marilyn>

Ok, I know you are upset and your hearts are racing, because ours have been since we learned of this. Donna Brown, one of our Board Members, thinks this is the worst case she has seen.

I am going to ask all of you to write a letter to the Irving City Counsel members, and tell them about this poor little guys story.

If this little guy was in this bad of condition, and the vet there said he was healthy and ready for adoption, well, something isn't right.

I realize they, like most shelters, are over crowded, over worked and under paid. But when a reputable national rescue organization offers to take a very sick dog to the hospital for immediate medical care, and are denied twice, and almost three times, well, something just isn't right.

If you can do so without sounding angry, (I know. I know. I am angry now too. I was so angry I could not even SPEAK when I first saw this picture if that tells you anything. Ok. I HEARD THAT! ) I'm going to ask you to write NICE LETTERS ONLY to the City of Irving City Counsel, the Mayor, and the Director of Health and Environmental Services.

Please just tell them who we are, that we offered our services to this very ill little dog, and were denied twice, almost three times.
If not for the kind receptionist kid, whose name we don't even know, this dog would have stayed there to die a slow and agonizing death.

Please tell them that we only want them to please check into the shelter's policies and procedures concerning extremely ill or injured dogs, when rescue is willing to come and get them, and what constitutes a dog being ready for adoption. Obviously, Irving wasn't ready to go anywhere but to the ICU.

Also please ask them what kind of medical care they are able to provide for seriously ill or injured dogs. We understand they have hired a veterinarian there, and that she did see Irving. We don't know how his case fell through the cracks.

You can show them the pictures of Irving, and the report of how ill he is now, and tell them that he is in ICU and will require bladder stone surgery as soon as we can get him stable enough to survive it.

Marilyn, you are our hero for saving Irving from Irving, today!

We must raise funds for Irving before we can do this surgery. Bladder surgery in this area of the country runs between $800-$1000.00. We do not have this raised for him, as we only knew today how serious his case was.

Next, we have more news about little Buttercup, our 41st Heart Murmur Baby.

Meet 7 week old "Buttercup". She is our 41st Heart Murmur Baby. She has a grade 6 heart murmur. Because she weighs only 2 pounds she is too small to be coiled at Texas A&M.

They can do the crack the chest open surgery. (ligation)
We also have to raise funds for her in full, before we can send her into a $2700.00 surgery.

The good Samaritan who saved her and contacted us, and whose husband drove this baby to Tulsa from Arkansas, is now, TADA, an official Small Paws Rescue Volunteer and a Bichon Mama!

Meet our newest family members, Jennifer and Marvin Shirley! They have a 13 year old Bichon named Miss Fiona! Jennifer has a challenge for all of you regarding baby Buttercup! This was Jennifer's FIRST rescue. KUDOS to Jennifer and Marvin Shirley!

Attached is a picture of Marvin with Buttercup and our 13 month old bichon Miss Fiona.

When I received an e-mail from a friend about a baby bichon with a heart problem, I went into action. The puppy was in the care of a vet in Bentonville, AR, placed there by NW Arkansas Humane Society. I knew the director as I had adopted a beagle mix from her about 18 months ago. I called her and got the scoop of Buttercup. The breeder had brought the puppies to the vet for their first immunizations and this Buttercup was sick. The breeder told to the vet to put her down. The vet didn't want to do that, so he contacted the NW Arkansas Humane Society. After hooking the director up with Cheri Sisco, I made my first rescue. This puppy is so lovable and full of energy. After a bath to wash the nasty stuff off her, she was so fluffy. She tossed rag toys, chased my 13 month old bichon, Miss Fiona, and waddled all over the kitchen. She slept in a laundry basket next to the bed. About 3 AM we were all awake and my husband took her into the den and they slept in the chair until dawn. She has the most playful and lovable disposition. I challenge all bichon lovers to make a donation today to save this baby. She will make someone a wonderful companion.
My husband Marvin transported the baby to the vet in Tulsa. He fell in love with her! She is the most adorable little baby! I'm praying for her and so are several others. PLEASE keep us posted.
She was my FIRST rescue!

I will authorize the bank to send an extra $50 this month.

Incidentally, for those who have on line banking available thru their banks, it is a wonderful way to have a regularly scheduled contribution from a checking account to Small Paws. Most of the major banks offer this "bill paying" benefit free. I have not seen this mentioned in your news letters. Perhaps others might be interested.

In case you need this info for your bookeeping, I have a $25 monthly contribution scheduled.

Dear Fellow Small Pawsers,

Yes, August is a popular vacation month, but come on - 5 responses out of
thousands of us? SPR has been so successful and able to save so many bichon
lives because of our strength in numbers and not having to rely on just a few
people giving extraordinary donations to stay afloat. The SPR newsletters
aren't written just for your entertainment (although it's wonderful when one IS
purely a happy update on a rescue story!) - they're written to inform you of
what's going on with the latest rescues and what the financial status is
relative to those latest rescue needs.

I know money is very tight for a lot of us (myself included) and gas prices are
taking their toll on most of our wallets, too, but easily a third or half of
our SPR list has $5 or $10 to spare or you wouldn't have PC's to be reading
these newsletters. 2000 people giving just $5 each in these crunch times is a
quick $10,000! As Robin always says, NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL, so PLEASE, let's
help out these precious bichons in desperate need!

Mary, Mom to SPR rescue Tanzi>

Buttercup is overnighting near Wichita Falls Tx. tonight. Tomorrow, our heart murmur relay team is carrying this precious cargo down towards Rosie Welch, who will try to get some weight on her in preparation for her surgery at Texas A&M.

Here's another way to help SPR,donate shares of stock! This is a win-win situation for everyone. No taxes on the donation (for either you or SPR) and no broker's fees. This is a great way to dispose of those miscellaneous shares of stock you've been holding on to and put them to good use!

I guess that's all for tonight. Oh wait! No it's not!

Our lost Ohio Foster Bichon was spotted today in a soy bean field, tangled up by her leash that she was wearing when she got away from her foster Mom's son, last Monday.

While a man was trying to untangle her in the soy bean field, she broke away, but we believe she is still in that soy bean field. The man delivered her leash to Julia, her foster mom for identification. It was her's and she is still alive! He did manage to give her water before trying to untangle her. Thank God it's not as hot up in Ohio as it has been down here.

Ohio Volunteers and team leaders have been out there all day, hot on her trail.

I told them that over the last 8 years, we have lost 23 SPR foster dogs, and we have recovered 23 SPR foster dogs, and this one is going to be number 24! Please keep praying!

Ok, you've heard from me a lot in the past 48 hours. I'm sorry so much has been going on, but it's my job to come and tell you about it and let you all decide how much we can do. I'm so thankful you want us to rescue the old, the sick, and the injured. We thank you for that, more than you can know. All My Love, Robin

Thank You's

Hey, Miss Bonnie,

We were just thinking of you again today -- Remember us? (how could you forget?)
We're Buster & Charlie Gordon -- you found us a nice home with Connie & Joe Gordon in Dallas, Texas -- they drove up to get us when we were just puppies -- around 11 weeks old when you finally approved them for adoption of darling us.

We're doing swell, and luckily, Mom & Dad have been fairly easily trained. We protect them from many dangers, such as the squirrels & and occasional o'possum who might come into OUR yard. Mom and Dad are understandably crazy about us, which you can understand from the attached recent photo.

Hope all goes well with Small Paws -- and we send love from all four of us.

Hello Robin
We adopted Bellaire Betty (now known as Bella) two years ago. She was a 5 1/2 year old puppy mill doggie.
She came to live with us and her two sisters. Muffin, a Lhaso mixed and Sassy , a schnauzer.
When she came to us she was a little zombie. No personality and the saddest eyes you can imagine. Well now she is a full doggie with laughing eyes and a "look at me, aren't I the cutest" personality.
She loves to go in the car and our motorhome and is happy, happy, happy. But two weeks ago she lost her oldest sister Muffin. I told her Muffin was on the rainbow bridge. And even though she is happy playing with Sassy and Sassy is happy with her, they are missing Muffin. Neither of them will go into Muffin's bed.
So mama and papa have agreed to try to adapt another little fluff and this time we have asked for a baby girl.
When we saw the article about Buttercup, we decided to donate $50.00 to her cause. Along with the money we are praying that she makes it. We live outside Houston Tx ., so along with our prayers we are hoping to be considered for her adoption.
I have enclose a picture of the 3 girlie girls in a field of blue bonnets and one of Bella on HER couch.
God bless you for all you do and if we ever come into some money, you are tops on our list. We are also praying for that much needed Volvo.

Thought I'd let you know this mornings newsletter did NOT come thru to me. I did not receive any mail until this afternoon. Netscape did another STUPID *Upgrade* to their mail system overnight. I couldn't get into my mail for quite some time this morning.

I found your newsletter like I always do. Open a newsletter, then go to the part of the newsletter with the link to the previous newsletter, then change the date. I just LOVE your newsletter system. Makes it easy to find the newsletters that I don't get!

Anyways, Netscape in their updated wisdom has put on a SPAM filter and the default is set to medium. I removed all filters. Don't know how many folks have Netscape for mail, but I hope they look to the NEW spam filters. We didn't have them before today! argggggggggggg.
