Gem of the Day:
The Today Show on NBC aired a news story
on puppy mills and PA. Governor Rendell’s
push to stop them. It is fantastic.

Meet 7 week old "Buttercup". She
is our 41st Heart Murmur Baby. I know, I
know. Her timing is not good, but then again,
is there ever a good time for these heart
murmur babies to come into rescue? I have
to think this is God's timing for this baby.
And His timing is a WHOLE lot better than
mine could ever even think of being. Trust
me on this one.

I never thought I would be coming to you
this soon after our 40th Heart murmur baby,
with news of our 41st.
Cheri Sisco, our AR. Team Leader got a call
from her veterinarian about little Buttercup,
who needed to come into rescue with Small
Paws ASAP.
Good Samaritans transported her here from
Little Rock, to Tulsa, today, where Dr. Russell
examined her. She weighs 2 pounds, is 7 weeks
old, and has a grade 6 heart murmur.
Doc Russell is always pretty conservative
on grading these, and if he says it is a
six, it's at least a six. They grade them
on a scale of 1-6, with 6 being the worst.
Because she weighs only 2 pounds she is too
small to be coiled at Texas A&M.
They can do the crack the chest open surgery
(ligation) on her if need be. It would be
nice to try to grow her just a little bit first, but we don't know how long she can
wait. We also have to raise funds for her
in full, before we can send her into a $2700.00
surgery.
She is acting ok now because she doesn't
need her heart to pump very hard, since she
is so small. This could change with a moment's
notice as we have seen before when one of
our heart murmur puppies died enroute to
Texas A&M.
I will never forget that day, that horrid
phone call when Small Pawser Terri Howard
called me crying, as the life drained out
of the Bichon baby that was lying in her
lap as John, her husband, sped ever closer
toward Texas A&M.
I vowed to remind us all of it each time
we were trying to save another heart murmur
baby. We just never know how much time we
have. Things can change in a heartbeat.

Last fall, we got word of a litter of four,
(there were five, one already died) who had
heart murmurs, in a commercial kennel in
Mo. Sadly, one of the quads died on the way
to Texas A&M.
Buttercup's surgury will cost about $2700.00.
We are planning to transport her down to
College Station Texas, home to Texas A&M
University, this SUnday IF we can raise funds
for her.
Right now, after almost a whole month of
August, the worst month for not-for-profits,
we have only $1048.18 in the bank. This isn't enough for
us to operate for even one whole normal day.
Many of our other Bichons need surgeries,
testing, and various treatments. I know they
aren't cute little puppies like Buttercup,
but they were at one time.
They need us just as badly as Buttercup needs
us. They didn't ask to be born and probably
never thought their families would have to
give them up, but yet, that is what has happened.
Whether they come to us as owner surrenders
or from kill shelters, they came to us with
nothing but love and hope for a better tomorrow.
We have established a stellar reputation
for the services we provide, and it is because
of your love and support through out these
past eight years.
Tonight, we learned of this precious little
boy in Northern, Texas. He is sick and in
pain and he is counting his minutes in a
kill shelter near Irving, Texas..

Irving from Irving, Tx.
Because of our strained funds, I had to ask
myself, "Do we even try to go after
him when our funds are so low, and we have
so many needs? Or do we have to choose to
leave him there, and pray he isn't, well,
killed dead.
Irving from Irving will be a blessing to
a human being if we can get him into rescue,
but we have to be able to pay for his medical
needs, and I wouldn't be a BIT surprised
if he has bladder stones.
Please don't fool yourselves thinking that
because he is cute they won't put him down,
and that someone will adopt him.
They go by the numbers of over crouded pens
in a kill shelter, not by the cuteness factor.
I've always loved this quote.
“Take the first step in faith. You don't
have to see the whole staircase, just take
the first step.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I know we are all stepping down the steps
of a staircase that isn't built yet. It's
dark and we can't see our hands in front
of our faces, but yet we continue to feel
for the step with our feet, in hopes that
we won't fall, because we carry in our arms
the souls of 250 Bichons, that have no one
else, but us.
We're all stepping out in faith here that
some of you somewhere in the country, have
been blessed enough so that you can help
Small Paws to save this little guy, Irving
from Irving, and to pay for the vet care
for the others we have in rescue now, including
little 2 pound, 7 week old, Buttercup.
See our 140 listings of 145 adoptable Bichons
(Some of these listings are of bonded pairs)
Read about him and tell me, how can we do
anything but go and bring him on home?

Irving from Irving, Tx.
Vicki, I know we are being bombarded with
incoming Bichons, but I have to tell you
about this little guy. He has been shaven
down except for his head. He also appears to have a urinary tract problem
as he drips. He is VERY skinny. He is scared
and shaking like a leaf.
He just arrived the Shelter today so their
"in house" vet has not checked
him out yet, but she will tomorrow. It is
possible that he will be available for "Rescue"
as early as tomorrow.
Is it possible to get this little guy into
Small Paws? I have attached some pictures
of him.
Sorry I have not been able to volunteer to
foster, but I now have 3 cats, 1 kitten,
and 2 dogs. I had made one too many visits
to the I.A.C. and last Thursday I could not
resist taking a little 5 wk old all white
kitten. I have to pray every time I go there
so I don't take anymore home with me. Snowball
loves the little kitten, every time the kitten
meows he runs to her to make sure she is
ok. If she is in the bathroom crying he will
run to the bathroom screaming for me to open
the door so he can check on her. He is the
sweetest dog ever!
I am still available to help with pulling
and transporting.
Hope to hear back from you soon.
Linda

You guys, most of you know me. I'm just a
plain ordinary middle aged blonde woman from
Tulsa, Oklahoma. I never dreamed this magnificent
obsession would happen to me, at this time
in my life, but it did, and this is that
story.
Finding Your Purpose in Life
Small Paws has happened to all of us who
have ever known the love of that special
dog in our lives. What a gift we have been
given to have known that love and to have
the opportunity to help others, like the
one we loved.
I really don't know what else to do but come
and tell you. Over and over you have asked
me not to stop telling you about their needs.
Sometimes, I wonder if the message is getting
old, if you are too tired to hear of one
more Bichon in need.
I always hope that if some of us can give
something one time, others of us can do it
another time, and no one is left to die in
a gas chamber, or by a needle in a kill shelter,
when a few dollars could have saved that
precious life, full of love and laughter,
waiting for a forever home.
That love is love waiting to be given to
a human being. A mirror reflection of God's
love for us all.
These Bichons need you. Buttercup needs you.
Irving in Irving needs you.
And, I'm going to be really honest with you
here. I need you.
When funds are this tight, and heart murmurs
and Bichons in kill shelters are coming in,
and we get diagnosis's of bladder stones
and diabetes, I just don't sleep very well.
We just learned of this 15 year old in Northern
California. She is listed as a poodle. Everyone
can see she is much Bichon as you and I,
and we need to go for her.
<Do you know any poodle rescues that may
take this girl. She is in a kill shelter.
She is 15 years old, I feel so bad for her.
thanks>

"HELLO! Do I LOOK like a poodle to you?
Look closer! See my short little legs? Look
at my other pictures! HELLO? See my tail?
I HAVE A BICHON TAIL THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
See my halos around my eyes! See my SMILE?
Help! I'm a Bichon, not a poodle! I need
a BICHON Mom or Dad to come for me! I'm not
a poodle! Look closer!"
I wonder what is was from the last newsletter
that caused only five of you to respond,
when thousands of us in 20 countries, share
this passion for helping Bichons who have
no other family but us.
I wonder if I am communicating it to you
well enough. I wonder if I am showing the
pictures you needs to see to understand the
medical issues with each Bichon.
I wonder if I make it clear enough about
how much the vet bills run by showing them
to you each week, and if I let you know how
hard I fight to keep them down. If you have
ever been a foster mom, you know how I nag
for you to try to find a better price, or
a vet who will give a larger discount.
All I can do is tell you about the need,
and pray that your heart is touched to help
them. I'll issue all matching donations that
come in, and I do hope that some come in.

Hi Robin,
I've created a new section in our CafePress
shop - The logo is different,
lighter, and might appeal to more of our
members.
You might want to mention it in the next
newsletter you do - people getting
ready for Summer events might enjoy some
new logo wear.
Also, Buckwheat and Tina are featured on
the first two SPR postage stamps, at
just $19.99 a sheet.

Maybe it will help to raise some funds for
when it's raining Bichons.

Next, this is posted by request of one of
our members. Maybe it would help to find
some new volunteers for Small Paws, and that
would be worth it but no, I don't think I
have a snowball's chance at this, so I am
humoring all of you ! (This still makes me
turn red even asking you to do this. Under
that bed is looking better all the time)

Dear Robin,
I am also praying for the thousands of dogs
in China who have been beaten to death, whether
or not they had rabies or were vaccinated
against it. These were pets, not strays,
often snatched from people who were walking
them on leashes. I can't even begin to imagine
what that would be like -- nor do I want
to. We can help focus international attention
on this horrible situation, besides with
our prayers, by going to the Care2 site (www.Care2.com
-- or maybe org) and signing a petition that
goes to the Chinese ambassador to the US.
The more signatures, the more impact. I'm
not affiliated with Care2, except for signing
some of their petitions to stop animal cruelty,
and a letter to the governor of PA thanking
him for signing a bill that will, we hope,
ban puppy mills in PA, and I don't get anything
from the site, except a little good feeling
when I put my name out there on letters and
petitions, but they can and do make a difference.
Can we add them to our list of good folks
to pray for? plus signing a petition there
does NOT put you on a list unless you ask
for it.
Love,
Lori Orser
