Gem of the Day: Ah, summer, what power you
have to make us suffer and like it.

If you would enjoy forwarding our Small Paws
newsletters to friends or family, please
feel free to do so!
Our new friend, Anna, an emergency room vet
tech from Tulsa, Ok., saved these two baby
girls for Small Paws!
These baby girls were in danger after their
two siblings died from failure to thrive
due to low birth weights.
(Little Baby Solomon was one of them.)
And their puppy mill Mom just was done raisin'
babies and said NO MORE.
(That's probably why the mill gave her to
us, already pregnant. She was trying to hurt
her babies.)
The girls have to be bottle fed and needed
medical care for the first ten days of their
lives. Your support is what allowed us to
pay the emergency vet tech to keep the girls
alive. One of the girls tried to croak for
about 8 hours, but Anna's expertise saved
her. NO MORE CROAKING ALLOWED!
Now, Bonnie Ferguson, our Executive Assistant,
is taking over and will be bottle feeding
the girls, day and night. She picked them
up from Anna, on Monday night. We wrote a
check to her for $105.00 for 7 days and nights
of constant care, which was a great deal
if you ask me!:)

WILL ROBINSON.

SORRY FOR YOU BECAUSE IT MEANS YOU ARE PROBABLY

Seriously though, I'm getting to the point
where I don't know what to tell these owners,
as we are having difficulties raising funds
during the month of August to pay for the
vet bills we have for Bichons already in
rescue with Small Paws.
In August, people are on vacation. They're
getting ready for college and paying tuition.
August is the worst month for all not-for-profits
and I for one, can't wait for it to be over!
BLAH! PLEASE PLAY SEPTEMBER SONG FOR ME SOON!
Though funds are slow to come in, the Owner
surrender forms aren't. In fact, they are
picking up! They are now coming in THREE
Bichons at a time for heaven's sake! SKY
DIVERS!

Toby came in to foster care with us on 17th
of Aug 2006. His owner said he was just seen
by their Vet. I made an Appointment for this
Morning and Kept the Appointment.
Toby has and was Panting hard non stop. Has
a large TUMOR under on Chest as well as Fatty
one near leg underbelly. The Vet examined
him and is alarmed with this TUMOR. He does
not believe its a Fatty tumor. Because of
the panting 4 days he needed blood work to
check out the over all health of TOBY. The other Vet that saw Toby thru the OLD
OWNER never checked out the TUMOR issue because
the old owner DID NOT WANT TO. It can be a number of Problems we need to
look at. Cancer, Heart worm, other Diseases.
We need to know what we are dealing with
so MY babies do not get sick and we know
how to care for Toby. I paid the BILL for
Blood work,Exam, and Ear infection he found
that needed to be treated. Medication and
nail trim, but need to be reimbursed.
The bad news is the bill is $217.95 just
to find the over all health of TOBY. Then
you can decide what we need to do. If it
is CANCER and with age and other things It's
a HOSPICE I will keep him and just keep him
comfortable till the time comes. Please pray
with us This is a Benign thing and he is
all stressed out with no other Bad news.
Again the Bill was paid by me so Reimburse
when you can and I want to help with it as
well. I am also going to have him Groomed
when I can He's real Stinky but LOVABLE.

Now $217.95 may not sound like a lot, in
comparison with our other vet bills, but
multiply that ( at least) times 8 Bichons
coming into rescue in one day, and it really
does add up!
Here are just a few of the other cases we
are working on at this time. This just in.
I have asked her to get an estimate for us.
We have to get this taken care of as soon
as possible.

Hi Marti and Robin- Well I have some news....yesterday
as Scooter was
eating his dinner, we think we had a "seizure"
because the left side of him
became paralyzed, he was growling, he was
in a "pointer dog" position, his
eyes were glazed, etc. My mom went to pick
him up and hold him, he growled
and was still frozen. He was not responsive.
When she went to put him down,
he sort of fell back. There are many other
details but that is the short
version. Afterwards he was fine, but you
could tell he didn't know what to
do or how to make it stop. I called my vet
and they want to do a seizure
panel on him which includes 4 things, an
ekg, a blood chem test, a chest
x-ray and one other thing I can't remember.
Before I make such an appt. I
wanted to know what you two had to say and
if I should do it. As far as his
"taz-devil" episodes we are taking
him in tomorrow for them to observe it
and determine if it is seizure like episodes
. Let me know what
do to:)

Then this is is about a puppy mill Bichon
in Wisconsin. She will need to be vetted.
Spayed, Dental, Brucellosis Testing, Quarantine
Boarding for 16 days. This will run about $600.00 there in Wisconsin.
Right now we will have to pay the $18.00
a day for quarantine, unless we can miraculously
find another vet that will do it cheaper.
We can't leave her there to be killed. We
just can't. If that happened I would be unable
to function to be even able to write to tell
you about it.:(
We re picking her up tomorrow but do not
have funds to vet her yet.

Bonnie/Robin....incoming bichon that was
dropped off by XXXXX.
This is a kill shelter, and this pup has
been there almost a week already,
so her time is running out....we are scrambling
to find a vet that has a
quarantine facility and will give us a discount.
We were going to take her
to Two Rivers, but they were very expensive
last year ($18/day for
quarantine)
Next, we have this stray Bichon down in Florida.
His owner didn't want him back. He was microchipped
to a "breeder" in Iowa. Gee..think
he was maybe a PUPPY MILL BICHON? He has
a mass on his back that must be removed and
sent to pathology. I advised them to have
Brucillosis testing done and BACK before
doing any surgery. Iowa you know.:(

We have a new little guy who was brought
in by a woman who found him as a stray to
her vet.......Beltway Animal Hosptial Anyway
they did not want to send him to the shelter,
so they called me and I said yes we would
take him. He did have a micro chip, but they
called the information in Iowa and the breeder
said she did not want any dog back.........go
figure. So he is ours now. He is getting a work up now and a dental
on Friday and a small mass removed from his
back at the same time. He is heartworm negative and they have given
him his shots. I am gonna talk Karen into
grooming him for us (that is never hard for
me to do, she is always willing) so he will
be a pretty boy. Also she has agreed to keep
him with her until I can find a foster home
for him in the interim. Whew, cause we is
leaving on Sunday for Las Vegas in the RV
and then on to Tulsa for the Bash. Anyway,
will find a foster hopefully before we leave
on Sunday.
We have a new member...........Bingo is his
name ooooooooo.

This is what Dave Hagadorn told us after
paying our vet bills last Monday night. It's
getting a little better because August is
fleeting, I think.
Last week, we were $4,052.08 in the red after paying bills.
This week, we are only -746.78 in the red.
Thank God for Bonnie McGill and her committee
of wonderful volunteers who hosted the Sequim
WA. bash last weekend. They raised $3185.95 for Small Paws, and we are all thanking
God that they did!

This balance includes $3185.95 coming in
this week from the Sequim Wa. bash
$746.78 In the red.
Now, that was the bad news. The good news
is that if you hurry, you can still get one
of TWO remaining Bichon Birthday Quilts.

Hey Robin….
I’ve been voting every day and hope to see you in that new Volvo station
wagon, crammed full of crates and grateful
fluffs.
Due to a mixup in an order (OK, so *I* was
the one mixed up, yeesh!) I’ve got two quilts
left over just WAITING for a picture in the
center. Can you post in the newsletter that
the first TWO donations of $50 can have one
of these quilts? After that, the birthday
fabric is no more…and I can’t even order
it again.
Look how cute these two came out!

This quilt is going to the precious Ellie
Mae. I wish Bailey, official quilt inspector,
would quilt drooling on her picture though.
Sweet little Lacey will soon be the proud
owner of this new quilt.
I’d like to thank everyone who ordered a
birthday quilt, with a special thanks to
Pam Bach. She ordered a quilt for Baby Carrie
Small Paws, our latest heart baby. It will
be going to her foster home. J
