When
you have this many Bichons in rescue, you are going to have emergencies. You
can expect the unexpected.
Some Bichons will become sick on any given weekend and need emergency care
which is always more expensive than the normal 9-5 veterinary care.
Some Bichons may be injured, and will need emergency care. One of our foster Bichons was attacked last week by a Mastiff who picked her up by the neck and shook her, and she nearly lost her life.

Sugar
went to TWO emergency hospitals, (One was MEDVET in

Some
puppy mill Bichons who came to us already in a family way, will have four
babies, of which two are premature, and those two tiny babies will need
emergency care.

Some
puppy mill moms, aren't good moms and try to hurt their remaining two babies,
and then, those 3 day old babies will need emergency round the clock care and
need to be hand bottle fed, preferably by a vet tech. Bonnie is going to take
them home and bottle feed them after they are a week old. Until then, we are
paying a vet tech to do this so they have 24 hour care with her at home during
the day and at the ER where she works at night.
I know this sounds like a crime drama from TV, but these are but some of the
ACTUAL emergencies that we have been dealing with the last four days.

Subj: Re: Update on Charlie
Date: 8/11/2006 11:20:12 AM Central Standard Time
From: rjpress@sbcglobal.net
Dear Robin and Jackie,

Charlie is only six and he does not feel one bit good. We MUST get him to a
dermatologist. It's not fair to him to keep him around if we can't help him.
Charlie is a sad mess and we are working very hard to put him back
together. Our vet prescribed 4 different medications and a medicated
shampoo to treat his SEVERE allergies and the resulting problems-ulcers,
infections, bald spots, etc. I have scheduled the earliest appt with
our veterinary dermatologist for next Thursday and I'll fax her the vet
letter to make sure that she understands and agrees to the terms of
treatment. Charlie constantly scratches himself bloody and needs to be
held all the time to prevent him from doing himself harm.
When
a preemie is born, we know you want us to do everything we can, to give them
the best chance of life. We don't use any heroic actions on preemies, because
their chances are slim to none to begin with. We do keep them warm, and fed,
and cuddled.
Little Solomon was one of these cases. He lived here on this earth for 77
hours, and we thought he might just make it.
There was a time on Friday night when he was blue as blue on blue, and they
called asking permission to euthanize him.
I asked if he was suffering, and they said they thought he was too young to
even know what was going on.
SO since he wasn't suffering, I told them to "STEP AWAY FROM THE
PUPPY."
They put oxygen on him, and he pinked right up, and started squirming again for
dinner.
This is a short video
of Baby Solomon, at around 4:00, last Sunday afternoon. He was vivacious and
hungry as a little horse.
for a free down load of Quick time Movie Player)
Solomon then unexpectedly went home to God at
around 10:00 that night. His tiny sister, Sarah, had preceded him, 48 hours
earlier. It just was not meant to be. They were both just too tiny.
Because of your support, we could at least TRY to see if he could make it with
warming help and feeding help. He wanted to live. He was just a little fighting
machine! His little mouse claws would just PUSH against my hand. (He didn't
have paws with fur yet and his little feet looked like that of a mouse. Bonnie
and I both fell completely in love with the little guy's fighting spirit.
Without your support, we would not have been able to take these preemie puppies
to the ER to be fed, and kept warm, 24 hours a day, in case there was a chance
we could pull them through. I believe that's what you all would have wanted us
to do.
Then, if those expenses weren't enough, in the last 24 hours we have had NINE owner
surrender forms come in. HUBBA-HUBBA, what in the world is going on out there?

one of those OTI's is 13 years old. :(
Your City and State?
Name of Bichon/Bichon Mix in need of rescue: Honey, Bichon Frise
is this dog a Bichon or Bichon Mix? Yes
Dog's age: 13 years
Sex of dog: Female
has this dog been Spayed or Neutered? Yes
can you tell us why this dogs needs to be rehomed? We have raised Honey since
she was 2 months old. Honey has been the love of our life. Unfortunately, I am
moving into a home with my friend and he is very allergic to dogs and cats. We
have tried to keep her but he gets really sick and can not be around her for
very long.
If we did have to slow down on taking in Bichons, it would have to be the Owner
Surrenders that we would have to look at first.
And the problem with that is that some owners would then take their fluffs and
drop them off at a shelter where they would be euthanized before the owners
ever left the parking lot, and no I am not kidding.
We believe that you all want us to keep going, to be able to make it through
August, the worst month for all not-for-profits.
After all, thanks to you, we have rescued Bichons from premature birth, to 18
years old.

Solomon
and Sarah: I got emotionally involved with little Solomon and dadgummit I know
better than that! I really thought he was going to make it! I do know EXACTLY
where they both are and they are 100% fine now. I believe with all of my heart
that they now know how much we loved them, and everything your support did for
them during their brief stay, here on earth.

Last
week we took in five

We
think this may be an ear.

Don't
ask. We dunno.

Afraid
to even guess. Looks like it came from the sea, to me.

A
precious face rests beneath all of that, bless his little heart.

Feet,
I think, this had to hurt. It looks like they haven't been touched by human
hands since birth.

Have
no idea not even maybe.

Getting
ready for spa treatment. They won't know how to act, shaved, fresh and clean!

Another
precious face. What if these babies had gone to another mill, instead of into
our loving arms? YOU rescued them from a fate worse than death, today. YOU all
saved these Bichons!

This
is a good sign. They are letting us touch them. This reminds me of a line from
"To Kill a Mockingbird".
[about her brother Jim]
Scout: "You can pet him, Mr. Arthur. He's asleep. Couldn't if he was
awake, though; he wouldn't let you. Go ahead."

And
they still seem to trust humans. I'll never understand this part of it.

This
must have felt like carrying rocks between your toes.

Ohio
Co-Team Leader, Linda Fausey, comforts our newest Bichons with the new last
name of Small Paws.

I
think this is a dread lock, but won't swear to it, looks like it is coming off,
one way or another.
Their vetting will be a minimum of $2000.00 for all, probably more like $2500.00 for all.
This is what Dave Hagadorn told us Monday night after paying vet bills. I cringe when it's Dave on the phone on a Monday night in August. SORRY DAVE!

You might want to mention it in the next newsletter you do - people getting

This was quite a way for him to drive! Kathy, his darling wife, was hosting a

head out for a Bichon Bash by himself is almost unheard of! Thank you Manny for

The first time I used them, (Constant Contact, not
men's pills,) I conveniently forgot to enclose the actual newsletter.
After I hit SEND I started screaming for it to come back and the screen just
sat there and looked at me. Dale was naked and in the bed trying to sleep and
he heard me screaming, "NOOOOOO! YOU COME BACK HERE!" Poor man, It's
a wonder he has stayed all of these almost 21 years, isn't it?
I turned on the light, and sat the laptop on his lap, and said, "DO
SOMETHING! I JUST SENT A BLANK EMAIL TO 6000 PLUS PEOPLE! RECALL IT! PAUSE IT!
STOP IT! DO SOMETHING!"
He informed me there was nothing that could be done, and that our Small Pawsers
won't be at all surprised that I did this because they know me. EXCUSE ME?!
I sent out another newsletter immediately, and that Constant Contact must
have a T-1 line because both messages got to you ALL in minutes.
It was taking an hour and 45 minutes to send one newsletter to all of
you, when we were doing it here at home.
The happiest thing was that people told us they hadn't heard from us in months,
and they got last night's newsletter! Yehaww! It seems to be working! (Ok, don’t
move. Don't turn your head, and don't breathe!)
