Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our online mailing list, especially if you have seen us featured in one of our recently updated media articles , read about us in the best selling book "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul", or if you saw Small Paws on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams!

Small Pawsers everywhere welcome you with open arms! We sincerely hope that you enjoy "Small Pawsing and reading Small Paws!"

If you are new to Small Pawsing®, this may look as if it is coming only to you but really it is going out to fellow Small Pawsers all across our country and in 20 foreign countries as well!

Adoption information is posted below. Turn up your speakers!
We have music for you!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is. http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/august0806.html

You have overwhelmed us with your generosity. We thank God for each one of you today! We are now out of the red, and into the black by about $1000.00. This isn't enough yet to get us through half a day but...we are on the way!

We can't thank you each enough...also for your heartwarming stories of your own personal heart dogs, and how they have affected your very lives!

This is an update on yesterday's newsletter, http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/august0806.html , along with some matching donation challenges.

First of all, we did get the FIVE OHIO POUND BICHONS, thanks to our very capable Ohio Team Leaders, Linda Fausey and Sharon King, who were there when the doors opened, yesterday morning. This is the picture the shelter had.

And this is what they looked like, up close and personal. Be brave...and remember they are now safe in the arms of Small Paws, and will never see condtions such as these again.

We send out our thanks to every breed rescue, every individual rescuer... every member of a message board or Internet list who let us know about these baby 2 year old Bichons, who needed us today, like nobody's business.(

Someone better hold Small Pawser Bill Adam back, when he sees these pics... I know he is in New Jersey now, but Ohio isn't that far away...he loves these Bichons and is NOT happy when they have been treated this way. (I think his middle name might be "Guido", but I digress...)

Subject: Carroleton Co. 5 Bichons

Robin, here are the Carroleton Co. Pound Puppies. The box holds mats cut by
the female pound worker off of two of the dogs. She felt sorry for
them and was trying to clean them up a little. These are among the
worst matted and filthiest dogs I have seen. They are two years old,
all male. We think they may be littermates. They are very frightened
and shake when handled, but are docile. They will be beautiful dogs.
Some seem to have skin problems. No wonder, the condition they are in!
Since our Ohio State Fair is on, we named them State Fair Tyler,
State Fair Timmy, State Fair Tony, (shown in several pictures), State Fair Tippy, and State Fair Tuffy. They are
being quarantined at Dr. Tancred's and the vet techs were appalled and
shocked by their condition. The groomer was there and said she'd get
to work on them asap. They'll need a full spa treatment!! While
taking information the receptionist asked, "They are supposed to be
white, aren't they?"
Linda Fausey

We think this may be an ear.

Don't ask. We dunno.

Afraid to even guess. Looks like it came from the sea, to me.

A precious face rests beneath all of that...bless his little heart.

Feet, I think...this had to hurt. It looks like they haven't been touched by human hands since birth.

Have no idea not even maybe.

Getting ready for spa treatment. They won't know how to act, shaved, fresh and clean!

Another precious face. What if these babies had gone to another mill, instead of into our loving arms? YOU rescued them from a fate worse than death, today. YOU all saved these Bichons!

This is a good sign. They are letting us touch them. This reminds me of a line from "To Kill a Mockingbird"...
[about her brother Jem]
Scout: "You can pet him, Mr. Arthur. He's asleep. Couldn't if he was awake, though; he wouldn't let you. Go ahead."

And they still seem to trust humans. I'll never understand this part of it.

This must have felt like carrying rocks between your toes.

Ohio Co-Team Leader, Linda Fausey, comforts our newest Bichons with the new last name of Small Paws.

I think this is a dread lock, but won't swear to it...looks like it is coming off, one way or another.

Their vetting will be a minimum of $2000.00 for all...probably more like $2500.00 for all. I just hope they don't have something seriously wrong, and that they just look and smell awful. Looks and smells, we can deal with. GET OUT THE CLIPPERS, AND STAND BACK. BUCK NEKID BICHONS COMING SOON.

We also have great news about Muffin, who came from Stockton, Ca. where the heat was so bad last week.

Muffin has breast tumors. They think they can get the cancer but the cost would have been $1500.00. and that was with a 50% discount!

Lulu Zargus, in Vacaville, Ca., works as a vet tech, and talked her boss into removing these breast tumors for $1000.00 instead of what had been previously quoted by another vet, $1500.00...and that is a savings of another $500.00! Yes! Thank you Darlena and Lulu!

And about this little one...Darlina found a home for this one, who adopted him directly from the shelter...he walked out on two feet..and he is more like 15 years old, the vet said...not 10. But he is outta there! Yankey is alive and counted for!

Yankee, a senior Maltese-Bichon, was dumped at a Bay Area Shelter. He was very pathetic looking but he cleaned up well. His owners neglected Yankee and never took care of him. Yankee has a flea allergy which has caused loss of fur on his rear area and tail. Whoever takes Yankee with have some medical expenses. Yankee is a senior dog, about 10 years old and weighs 16 pounds. He needs a dental cleaning and should be neutered at the same time. Yankee only wants to be loved and return love. He is quite, gentle and loves nice slows short walks.>

And 4 year old Abe's eye doctor says he can possibly wait two months, but no more for this surgery to remove his juvenile cataracts. As soon as we have the funds, I'm going to authorize Lee Farrow (zoomommy22001@yahoo.com) to take him in and get-er-done!

And the final God Thing to happen yesterday is this...

Hello Robin, I talked with the owner of Ivy the 5 year old bichon that needs
immediate surgery for a large stone removal. Patty had talked with her
sister tonight and asked her to call me. The sister had indicated that her
sister Sara was going to surrender her dog to Maxfund. Sara (owner) had
taken Ivy to Maxfund for an exam. They can do the surgery for $250, I had 1
quote for $950 before discount. With the present situation with SPR funding
I talked with Sara about her surrendering Ivy to Maxfund. Maxfund is a no
kill shelter with a full veterinarian staff. They will most likely have Ivy
fostered while she recovers and should have no problem placing her. I have
worked with Maxfund on adoptions and have used their vet services on my
personal dogs and never had a problem. I assured Sara that Maxfund would not
put down this adoptable baby. I think Sara just has way to much on her plate
right now. She's a young mother with two small children (1 and 4). She
doesn't have time for her dogs. She also has a King Charles that's 2. If she
needs to place that dog as well she will call me. I also work with another
small dog rescue. Their money is tight and something has to give. I really
think Ivy will find a much better home and will get the medical attention
she needs. Sara is going to take Ivy to Maxfund in the morning so she get
treated right away.
I want to thank Pat Huber and Patty Neville for getting out the word about
Small Paws Rescue. i look forward to working with you again in the future.
Let's get some sleep...............good night!>

THANK YOU GOD for these many blessings!

called bichons can heal loneliness, sadness, and boredom---just ask anyone who's known
one! It's the gift that gives back tenfold, if you can help a bichon have a chance at life,
health, and affection. And these little guys are desperate.>

And from Nancy Archerd, we have a "Beloved Heart Dog Challenge"...oh Nancy...thank you so so much. I know we have so many Small Pawsers from around the globe who can relate to having had a beloved heart dog!

From: archerd@mind.net

Robin and Stephanie - Thanks for reminding me that I have been truly blessed in my life to have 3 heart dogs.
So I have indeed been very blessed. I am donating $10 for each of my beloved heart dogs out of
gratefulness that they were in my life and I challenge all Small Pawsers to do the same.
Windee was the love of my life - an Aussie who was fortunate enough to have kept her tail (and boy did it wag!)
lived to be two weeks shy of her 17 1/2 birthday. She went to college with me as a puppy and
saw me through my young adulthood and into marriage.

Brie was a Golden Retriever who I bought as a puppy when Windee was 13 to help me when the
time came for Windee to go to the Rainbow Bridge - ha ha ha - Windee fooled us all by living 4 more years!
Brie was brilliant, although it took 3 years to channel her energy (after chewing a hole in the kitchen floor and
other fun activities) she became high scoring obedience dog in our area.
Brie's nephew Max was sent from heaven.
He fell in love with our adopted daughter when she came home - she slept on his tummy, dressed him in doll
clothes and when I painted her toenails, I painted his. It broke our hearts when we lost him to cancer
when he was only 8. We still can't look at a photo of him without crying.
So I have indeed been very blessed. I am donating $10 for each of my beloved heart dogs out of
gratefulness that they were in my life and I challenge all Small Pawsers to do the same.>

I would like to challenge folks to slow
down and see how much they can save in gas (not to mention their nerves).
If they can donate the savings to Small Paws Rescue that's even better!

I've been quite surprised at how much money I save at the pump just by slowing
down. Be sure to check your tire pressure too.

These fluffs need us all.
Love and blitzes from the little white fluffs.>

And from Dana Perez, , our Ga. Team Leader...way to go Dana and thank you!!

Robin,
After reading your latest newsletter. I asked myself what more could I do to help? I decided to gather all of the loose change from around the house and cash it in. It was easy to take to my local grocery store where they had a machine that counts it and gives you a receipt for your coins. Well...after their percentage was taken out I had $98.27. I'm sending this money to SPR tonight! Maybe...if everyone that reads your newsletter does the same we can come up with some much needed cash.

Then from Marti Lindell, not really a challenge, but a love story about her husband Andy, who passed away suddenly from a stroke just barely over one year ago. I remember this rescue run...he called to tell me he was driving in the Hotter than Hell 100...after what else? A beloved Bichon who needed rescued, and to be brought on home to Small Paws.

Suzy-Q, owned and loved by Small Paws Volunteer, Tracy Russell at turtlewolves@insightbb.com

Robin,
I'm in the process of selling Andy's old pickup truck (Ole Blue). It was used a lot for rescue...he drove it all the way up to Elkhart IN to pick up Miss Stinky, now known as SuzyQ (adopted by Tracy Russell), who was so filthy, and he had no A/C and it was hot as hell that day, he never stopped talking about what an experience that was. He loved Small Paws Rescue, so if I close the deal tomorrow, I will send $100 for the 5 Ohio stinky bichons, in Andy's memory and SuzyQ's honor.

Love, :) Marti

Now, The Mad Quilter's Quilt Shoppe is still open and she has only sold 10 quilts this time, as opposed to something like 50 quilts all of the other times. If you want a quilt, now is the time to do it!

From: christinejohnson@alltel.net

Hey Robin,

It seems like we have so many fluff emergencies right now; so many precious little ones needing expensive vet care before they can find their forever homes. I’d like to help by offering some very special quilts for some very special bichons! Check out the new samples!

Personalized birthday quilts are here, and Bailey was MORE than glad to model for the center square. These quilts feature “Happy Birthday” fabric, multi-colored bones, a plaid, and even a doggie print with leashes, toys, and bowls. Very colorful and totally unique for that special dog of yours. They measure 32” square and are made of 100% cotton fabrics. Please note: photo transfers to fabric are not as “rugged” as regular rag quilt squares. Although they are washable, wash with care in cold water, and only when necessary. The photos may fade with repeated washings. Think what a wonderful wall hanging these would be, or as a table topper.

I’m also offering a birthday quilt with our favorite fluff puppy head in the center. Here it is:

Like quilt #1, this quilt is 100% cotton and 32” square. It features birthday fabrics and candles, and can be machine washed and dried as desired. For more pictures, please visit my “Small Paws Quilt Shop” website at: www.christinejohnson.org.

To order either quilt, just make a $50 donation on the secure Small Paws credit card website.

Or you may send a check or money order to:
Small Paws Rescue Inc.
3316 S. 72nd. W. Ave.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74107

Specify quilt #1 or #2, and if ordering #1, send me your fluff’s name and picture to BR> From: christinejohnson@alltel.net Please allow three weeks for delivery. Each quilt will be handmade for your fluff and it will take the ’42 Singer some time (not to mention the ’52 owner of said sewing machine!)

And just so you know….Bailey’s real birthday is August 16th, when I picked him up from a shelter in North Georgia as a FOSTER fluff. Don’t tell him what he’s getting for a present. J

I just wanted to let you know that Vinnie is doing very well. He is just a wonderful little guy. He must have been a baseball player in a previous life because he loves to catch the ball when my grandchildren (all in their teens) play ball. Vinnie plays shortstop!!

He is my little shadow and at night still prefers to sleep on top of my head. He still gets very upset when I leave him but my daughter who was in the house once when I left, says he cried a little and then settles right down. He has never had an accident in the house or been destructive of anything. The car is another issue with Vinnie but that is manageable.

I am so glad I adopted him. My sister says, I didn't choose Vinnie; Vinnie chose me!!

Thanks to SPR for blessing me with Vinnie.

Hello Bonnie,
Ann Fromm here, Just wanted to tell you that Joy is doing soooo well! She is the sweetest and most lovable little girl anyone would ever want. She plays with the pack on a regular basis(almost every day) and is having the time of her life. We laugh so hard at the way her short little legs carry her as she blitzes with great speed around the yard with all the other dogs, it is a sight to see! We absolutely LOVE her. She gets lots of love and kisses from all of us including the pack- They accepted her with out any hesitation from day 1. (Amber, Emma, Mickey and Windsor are the dogs she sees very regularly and some times she sees Max and Bella too) They are all Bichons except Amber the Poodle. She adores my mom and loves to be held a lot by her, which my Mom really enjoys doing. I can't imagine our lives without her. She is doing well in all areas and is very happy and healthy.
Thanks for being a part of bringing Joy into our lives,
All the best to you,
Ann Fromm>

Dear Robin
This is Bella. I was Belaire Betty when I came from my foster mom to my forever home. I have been here two years now and I wanted to let you know how happy I am.

When I arrived I found out that I have two sister. Sassy and Muffin. Sassy is about my age and I hang out with her a lot. She has taught me all kinds of cool things. My sister Muffin is older and I don't think she is feeling too well but she and Sassy have been very kind to me and I can't image being alone again. Mom is here most of the day and Papa travels a lot but it is very joyous when he comes home.
We do a lot of neat things together. Once a month we go camping and I get to visit with all the other doggies. Mom refers to us as her gaggle of girlies, and all the campers come over and visit with us.
We also go on vacations in our motorhome and it is my favorite thing to do. I love to sleep in the rocking chair as we go down the highway.-
I asked mom to send the pictures of us in the motorhome and also the picture of us in the bluebonnets. Thank you so much for providing me with my forever home

Despite having been on Enalapril for over a month and and Lasix (diuretic) for a month, and having it increased after the first week, Spike is still having long coughing spells and panting a lot, and having labored breathing when he sleeps. He has also stopped coming to the door to greet me when I come home from wherever I may have been (this probably worries me more than anything else; even if he's sleeping, Kimiko always alerts him to my arrival; he just lies still wherever he is and waits for me to come to him). He has also stopped begging for his evening walk, and instead is begging for me to go to bed -- with him, of course! I'm not sure he's peeing enough either, given the fact that he's on Lasix, and he has lost his appetite, letting Kimi finish his food if I'm not quick enough, and turning down even the treats I make for him. Please pray for him; I want as much time with him as possible, being a selfish human, but I also want him NOT to suffer. Whatever happens will be the right thing, I'm sure, but please ask, in whatever faith you have, that this sweet boy enjoys what life is left to him. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. (Poor Kimiko doesn't understand this; but she KNOWS something is wrong, and she doesn't pester him to play, or grab his tail, or try to steal his treats, even when he is not eating them; she just lies beside him and occasionally licks his face. It is sweet, but of course it just worries me more!)

Thank you again,
Lori Orser, Spike, and Kimiko>
