Dear Robin
I wanted to thank everyone who responded
to Carrie’s need. After leaving SC to fly
Carrie from Atlanta to Houston today I don’t
think she could have waited much longer.
She was so lethargic on the plane and her
heart was whooshing like crazy. I took her
out of the carrier so I could check on her
I didn’t want anything happening to her on
the plane after losing Mikey. Carrie and SPR has made a lot of new friends
today. Several people wanted our website
so they could check up on her. Some woman
even shared with me about the hole her son
had in his heart. Another one shared about
the dog she had when she was a kid. It was
endless what this sweet baby did for people
today
Getting an airline tkt the night before and
being able to use my miles and pick out the
flight you want is unheard of! I was able
to get from SC to TX and back in one day.
And this was with a cancellation and delay!
Then I landed at the exact gate I was leaving
to go back home at.
I also want to thank Dana Perez, her dad
and Patty Shearer for being a part of this
very special day for me. I love you guys
! Please keep praying for baby Carrie.

Texas A&M has called me with an update.
They did a fine needle aspirate on those
swollen lymph nodes, and thank God it is
not lymphoma.
Dr. Kevin Hahn, one of the foremost canine
oncologist in the world told me that they
are seeing lymphoma in dogs as early as only
6 months old. SO we have passed THAT hurdle.
They think it is a reactive swelling of some
sort and the cardiologists are not too worried
about that part. They have her scheduled
for to be coiled, (the least invasive procedure)
on Wednesday.
For those of you who may be new to Small
Pawsing, here is more about the "coiling"
procedure that saves so many little lives
at Texas A&M.
This was written by the two main cardiologist
there...Dr. Matt Miller and Dr. Sonjia Gordon
Transarterial coil embolization for canine
patent ductus arteriosus occlusion.
Sometimes, if the Bichon is too small, under
3 pounds, they have to go in and do the crack
the chest open surgery which is called ligation.
So, they are going to attempt to coil this
little gal on Wednesday.
We will see where we are tonight in regard
to our general vetting fund, after paying
our bills tonight, and I will let you know
in the morning.
I know we have a little Bichon with several
mammary tumors, who is needing surgery to
the tune of $1500.00 out in Northern California.
She is coming to us via another rescue group
who would have no choice but to euthanize
her if we don't take her. As soon as she
is in our custody, I'll let you all know.
We have two Small Paws sponsored events coming
up soon!
Next weekend, August 12, we have our Bay Area Bichon Bash in San Leandro California.

Location: Washington Manor Park
14900 Zelma Ave., San Leandro, CA View Map
When: Saturday, August 12, 12:00pm

This year we have sooo many exciting things
planned for the day. The picnic starts at
high noon again at Washington Manor Park
in San Leandro. There is plenty of FREE parking
and a 1/4 mile loop around where you can
drop off your picnic stuff and where we are
having our rescue parade.

I'll be attending this Bay Area Bash, thanks
to the generosity of Brian and Lynda De Hart,
who donated a roundtrip airline ticket for
me to fly, and to the Martin Family who are
always so good to cover my hotel and meals.
The Martins support Small Paws as a family...and
I do mean as a FAMILY..the MOM the DAD the
SISTERS the AUNTS the UNCLES, the HUSBANDS...and
now Kathy's little baby boy! And we appreciate
them all so very much!
We desperately need more volunteers in the
Bay Area, so that will be one my main focuses
at this Bichon Bash!

Then, the next weekend, in Sequim, Washington,
we have this SPR Bichon Bash! This is a huge

Robin,
I finally had my hip replacement surgery.
After several days in the hospital, I moved
to a rehab facility. I missed my dogs sooooo
much. You can imagine what a boost I got
from a visit with a pink Bichon. When I was
showing the nurses pictures of my fluffs
and telling them about Small Paws they told
me about Spirit. I asked if I could meet
her. Spirit's mom works at the rehab and
brings her to work with her. Spirit has separation
anxiety and is very lucky that she can go
to work with mom, Delaine. Delaine adopted
her from her original owner who could no
longer care for her. Delaine plans to adopt
a companion for Spirit so she won't have
to be alone. Of course I have told her all
about Small Paws and she is now on the mailing
list and searching for the right match for
Spirit. Spirit is one girly girl. She has
a pink crystal studded collar and pink toenail
polish to match her lovely pink coat. Spirit
clearly knows she is a princess. What a treat
it was to visit with her.
If any Small Pawsers have considered sharing
their fluffs with hospital, rehab or nursing
home patients they should certainly follow
through and find out what is required to
share their dogs in local facilities. Even
though I knew my stay would be short I got
such a lift from Spirit's visits.
I'm healing at home now and you can be sure
that all five dogs are helping with my physical
therapy. When I have my other hip done I
hope to go back to rehab with Spirit.

OK, that's all for now. More as it happens!

On Saturday we had a booth at a Pet Education
Fair and raised a total of about $200 for
Small Paws! In attendance were Andy Chapman
(photo), Pamela Staveley, Cheryl Blaydon,
and Shirley Savage. In addition, Terry Broughton
donated beverages for us to sell. We sold
doggie treats as well and had a craft project
for the kids. There were well over 100 people
in attendance and we had many people stop
by to chat and see the fluffs. I want to
thank The Animal House (www.theanimalhouse.net)
for inviting Small Paws and for so generously
donating >$150 to Small Paws from the
proceeds of their silent auction! We had
a great day, and as always, enjoyed getting
the word out about SPR.
Sincerely,

Robin,
Please thank everyone who has kept my friend
Melissa in their prayers. She has Stage 3
ovarian cancer, which has attached itself
to her intestines and stomach. Luckily, it
is not in her bones or major organs. It's
a good thing she requested a C-section when
she had the baby, otherwise, it would have
gone undetected. The cancer is in its early
stages, but is a fast-growing one. Ovarian
cancer is very hard to detect. She had regular
tests for it right up until she became pregnant,
so the doctors think they caught it early
enough.
Melissa saw a female doctor in Syracuse this
past week, and she feels quite comfortable
with her. She will have survey on August
16, at which time parts of her intestines
will be removed and she will undergo a hysterectomy.
While the doctors aren't 100% sure, they
strongly believe Melissa's cancer may be
hereditary because her mom died from it at
a very early age. Thankfully, she had a boy
and not a girl, because she could have passed
on the gene if her baby was female. After
the surgery, she will have 8 months of intense
chemo, beginning with hot chemo. This is
going to be a very rough time for her, but
her doctor is optimistic that she can get
Melissa into remission.
She and her husband decided to baptize their
beautiful miracle son, Jake Richard today,
after which Melissa will be anointed by her
parish priest. Please keep her in your prayers.
Thank you and God Bless,
Roe Bonacci >

You all saved Max's life by providing liver
shunt repair surgery for him in OKC, with
surgeon, Dr. Skip Tanger! Click on his picture
to see a short video of how good he feels
NOW! (Max, not Dr. Skip)
Hey Robin -
It sounds like Small Pawsers need a little
sunshine right now, so I wanted to give y'all
a Max update.
I can't thank everyone enough for giving
to this boy for his surgery. As his foster
momma, before &after surgery, it's like
night &day!
Before, you could tell that he wasn't feeling
good. What a difference that surgery has
made!
Yesterday I took Max to work with me. He
went in all the offices and visited everyone!
His tail was just about to wag OFF!
What really made me just about cry was when
we went for a walk down "main street"
in front of my office. There was a little
boy sitting on the sidewalk playing in front
of his mom's business. Max just marched his
furry self right up to him, crawled into
his lap and started giving him puppy kisses!
The little boy laughed, and was petting Max,
and it was the sweetest thing y'all ever
saw.
This Miracle Max, who was supposed to be
"not with us" on more than one
occasion, was surely put here on this planet
for a reason. If only to make a little boy
laugh.
We're getting our bloodwork done in a week
(Max, not me) and then we'll get our teeth
cleaned and be one step closer do getting
a forever home.
PLEASE let all the Small Pawsers know how
much Max appreciates have a second chance
at life. He is truely a gift from God.....
Much love,
Lynne &The Bates Bichon Brigade!>
