Six month old Carrie Small Paws.
Small Paws Volunteer Staffer, Stephanie Hunter,
is about to get on the plane from Atlanta
to Houston with our 40th Heart Murmur Puppy.
Steph was distressed when she called me this
morning. I knew something sounded wrong in
her voice.
Remember, Stephanie is the one who takes
your credit card donations by e-mail. You
just e-mail her at dancinblvd@sc.rr.com and tell her how much you want to send to
Small Paws for the Bichons, and she enters
it into the secure credit card bank site.
She was distressed because we haven't been
able yet to raise even half of what we need
for Carrie's heart surgery. She also said
Carrie is being still and quiet, and that
is worrying her as well.

Mikey being blessed by Stephanie's Priest
I think this may be why Stephanie wanted
to be the one to take this little girl to
Houston with her airline milage. Usually,
the pups are within driving distance. Steph
now lives only an hour's flight from Atlanta,
and Delta would let her use her mileage for
TODAY. It really was a God thing all around!
We are getting Carrie into A&M today
through their Emergency Room, as they have
instructed us to do.
Stephanie says she has been feeling her chest
and it's really whooshing. (Carrie's, not
Steph's)
She asked for me to tell you all that she
would love nothing more than to come home
this evening to a box full of emails, with
help for little Carrie's heart surgery.
We aren't authorizing any other surgeries
or treatments for any other of our Bichons,
until we can take care of this emergency
medical situation for Carrie.
The most critical have to be moved to the
front of the line. We believe this is what
you would want us to do.
We still have this matching donation challenge
for you. I know that Sue would want us to
leave it up!

Hi Robin, please share this with the list
if you would like to do so.
I would like to encourage those of you who
have a little or a lot
squirreled away in stocks to consider donating
some of your shares to
Small Paws. Maybe you have some that have
performed poorly and
mentally you've already written them off
as a money loser. Why not
transfer what you can to Small Paws where
it can still do so much
good? You can take the amount as a donation
and you KNOW the funds
will be put to a really good use. If you
have been lucky enough to
make a little money in stocks, why not share
in the profits? Its
still a donation, and your remaining shares
can continue on as
before. I want to let you know just how easy
this is. Back in
February with the flood of Valentines bichons,
I was motivated to see
what it took to donate some stocks. I didn't
have the "cash money" to
make that kind of donation, but the money
that was tied up in the
stocks I never really felt I "had",
so I knew I'd never really miss
it either. All it takes is a call to your
broker or an email to your
on-line trader. I had to sign a paper, tell
them how many shares of
what stock, and POOF on the day the broker
received my letter the
funds were magically transferred to Small
Paws' account. This is so
easy, its ridiculous! So drag out those statements
and see if there
is any house-cleaning you can do to help
out the fluffs!
Fondly,

Subj: Birthday Quilts

Hey Robin,
It seems like we have so many fluff emergencies
right now; so many precious little ones needing
expensive vet care before they can find their
forever homes. I’d like to help by offering
some very special quilts for some very special
bichons! Check out the new samples!

Personalized birthday quilts are here, and
Bailey was MORE than glad to model for the
center square. These quilts feature “Happy
Birthday” fabric, multi-colored bones, a
plaid, and even a doggie print with leashes,
toys, and bowls. Very colorful and totally
unique for that special dog of yours. They
measure 32” square and are made of 100% cotton
fabrics. Please note: photo transfers to
fabric are not as “rugged” as regular rag
quilt squares. Although they are washable,
wash with care in cold water, and only when
necessary. The photos may fade with repeated
washings. Think what a wonderful wall hanging
these would be, or as a table topper.
I’m also offering a birthday quilt with our
favorite fluff puppy head in the center.
Here it is:

Like quilt #1, this quilt is 100% cotton
and 32” square. It features birthday fabrics
and candles, and can be machine washed and
dried as desired. For more pictures, please
visit my “Small Paws Quilt Shop” website
at: www.christinejohnson.org.
To order either quilt, just make a $50 donation on the secure Small
Paws credit card website.
Or you may send a check or money order to:
Small Paws Rescue Inc.
3316 S. 72nd. W. Ave.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74107
Specify quilt #1 or #2, and if ordering #1,
send me your fluff’s name and picture to
BR> From: christinejohnson@alltel.net Please allow three weeks for delivery. Each
quilt will be handmade for your fluff and
it will take the ’42 Singer some time (not
to mention the ’52 owner of said sewing machine!)
And just so you know….Bailey’s real birthday
is August 16th, when I picked him up from
a shelter in North Georgia as a FOSTER fluff.
Don’t tell him what he’s getting for a present.

a Birthday or Anniversary gift, is to make
a donation in that person's name or honor.
Please be sure to include a note so that
person or family can be sent notification

Here's another way to help SPR....donate shares of stock! This is a win-win situation for everyone. No taxes on the donation (for either you or SPR) and no broker's fees. This is a great way to dispose of those miscellaneous shares of stock you've been holding on to and put them to good use!
And, if you can contribute to charities at
work, through United Way...how about choosing
Small Paws as your charity at your place
of employment?
Thank you all so much for your help for a
little Bichon that was born with a hole in
her heart. She doesn't know what that means.
She doesn't know why she was put here on
this earth by her "breeder", because
she doesn't understand greed. Our understanding is that the breeder had
a choice...surrender her dogs or face criminal
charges. Now we KNOW that wasn't a loving
environment.
Carrie only knows that she doesn't feel good
and that she is depending on us, her Small
Paws family to somehow help her.
I am praying that we can do that, and soon.

(Editor's Note: Di asked for my prayers for
Buddy Jay and their family. I don't believe
she will mind me sharing this with you, her
Small Paws family. Buddy Jay is their heart
dog...adopted from SPR. Any of us who have
been through a critical illness with these
precious little bundles of love, know what
Di and Howie are going through now. Please
keep them in your prayers. Buddy Jay is in
the end stage of congestive heart failure.)
In the past couple of years I managed to
do my job thru so many tragic events but
yesterday having to be at the Vet. Hospital
by 4:00 to hear what the Vets had to say
about this little boy made me tremble so
uncontrollably & cry so bitterly I gave
up trying to work & threw unfinished
work on one of my bosses desk, apologized
& ran out the door....
An equally shaken Howie & I were met
by the owner of the hospital who is also
BudJ's Internist along with another colleague.
We were told what we basically knew that
he is in the end stage of his disease. The
lasix was no longer doing the job and he
has been put on a heavy regime of many drugs
(you wouldn't believe how many) to help keep
the fluid out and help him breathe more comfortably.
They showed us the deep bluish red of his
tongue and explained about his need for oxygen.
Through it all, they (thank you God &
friends for your prayers) have been able
to get him in a more stable condition for
now and told us staying in this cage was
no way to live and surprised us by telling
us they were letting us take him home with
the condition that he is brought back in
to have his kidneys monitored frequently.
We've bought a small tank of oxygen to travel
with in an emergency are renting a larger
tank to use when he needs it. Through it
all our little trooper came home & is
eating and playing with his ball in between
long periods of napping. This evening when
it got a little cooler we took our boyz out
for a walk. We put Buddy Jay in a baby stroller.
(It was the same thing I did when Cody was
paralyzed) & let him look around &
periodically took him down to sniff a bit
& do his business. He had a good time
& so did we. He is so amazing I can't
stop looking at him. I stayed home today.
It was a gift to be with all three of them
again. So far our Buddy Jay is responding
to the medicine and the love. His color is
better and he has not needed any oxygen.
I don't know how long he has no one does
but whatever the time we are going to treasure
it. Miracles do happen, even if they are
little ones......like Buddy Jay & his
will to live.
Love, Di<

Robin,
Just when I thought all of the bad news was
behind me, I took Anya (formerly Clodagh)
to the vet this evening because her right
eye suddenly seemed to have clouded over.
My vet is fairly certain that she has a lens
subluxation which will require surgical removal
of the lens in that eye. I have to make an
appointment with an opthamologist ASAP, hopefully
I can get her in before Monday or Tuesday.
Unfortunately the opthamologists in this
area are very busy.
If that weren't enough, the vet detected
a heart murmer! Anya didn't have it 5 months
ago when she went for her annual checkup
and to have her teeth cleaned. It just suddenly
appeared between then (end of March) and
today. As you have probably guessed by now,
her eye surgery will have to be delayed until
we figure out what is going on with her heart.
She will be going back next week for an x-ray
and depending upon what that reveals, possibly
an ultrasound.
Anya is such a sweet, loving older girl.
She is the #1 "love puppy" in my
whole bunch of fluffs. I hate for all of
this to be happening to her all at once.
I'd like to ask the SPR prayer warriors to
please pray for her. That she has a speedy
recovery from her present situation and that
there are no additional complications on
top of what she already has.
Bichon Hugs,

Prayers for Gallant Sam
Small Pawser Montez Brown called me last
night. Her SPR adopted Bichon, Gallant Sam,
is very ill. His liver enzymes are through
the roof. Dr. Skip in OKC, went in yesterday
to look for a liver shunt, and there was
none.
Since Sam first came from the Florida Everglades,
I advised her to have him tested for the
tick born diseases, Erlichea, Lymes, and
then, since it is his liver, maybe even check
for hepatitis. His symptoms are vomiting,
lethargy, and high liver values.
Montez is in OKC now, with him at Dr. Skip's
hospital. This was a phone in prayer request.
Montez's email address is tez@mail.1starnet.com She loves this boy so much. And she loves
Small Paws with all of her heart. Robin
