Hey Robin,
It seems like we have so many fluff emergencies
right now; so many precious little ones needing
expensive vet care before they can find their
forever homes. I’d like to help by offering
some very special quilts for some very special
bichons! Check out the new samples!

Personalized birthday quilts are here, and
Bailey was MORE than glad to model for the
center square. These quilts feature “Happy
Birthday” fabric, multi-colored bones, a
plaid, and even a doggie print with leashes,
toys, and bowls. Very colorful and totally
unique for that special dog of yours. They
measure 32” square and are made of 100% cotton
fabrics. Please note: photo transfers to
fabric are not as “rugged” as regular rag
quilt squares. Although they are washable,
wash with care in cold water, and only when
necessary. The photos may fade with repeated
washings. Think what a wonderful wall hanging
these would be, or as a table topper.
I’m also offering a birthday quilt with our
favorite fluff puppy head in the center.
Here it is:

Like quilt #1, this quilt is 100% cotton
and 32” square. It features birthday fabrics
and candles, and can be machine washed and
dried as desired. For more pictures, please
visit my “Small Paws Quilt Shop” website
at: www.christinejohnson.org.
To order either quilt, just make a $50 donation on the secure Small
Paws credit card website.
Or you may send a check or money order to:
Small Paws Rescue Inc.
3316 S. 72nd. W. Ave.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74107
Specify quilt #1 or #2, and if ordering #1,
send me your fluff’s name and picture to
BR>
From: christinejohnson@alltel.net Please allow
three weeks for delivery. Each quilt will
be handmade for your fluff and it will take
the ’42 Singer some time (not to mention
the ’52 owner of said sewing machine!)
And just so you know….Bailey’s real birthday
is August 16th, when I picked him up from
a shelter in North Georgia as a FOSTER fluff.
Don’t tell him what he’s getting for a present.

This is an emergency communication of the
Small Paws Rescue Network. I'm writing this
from a hotel lobby, and Dale, my husband
will send it out to you from our home, as
soon as I can get it emailed to him.
I'm in Oklahoma City now, and from where
I'm seated it's not mighty pretty, I don't
care what that Route 66 song says.
As you know, yesterday I drove down to Duncan,
Ok. to pick up two 4 year old Bichon brothers
who were running out of time at a shelter
there.
They are siblings, and the note on the paperwork
from the breeder says they were born in the
same sac, which would make them identical
twins. They have been together since day
one, which was March 9, 2002. They are very
attached, and while riding in separate crates
placed next to each other, touched noses
the whole way.
Sadly, one of them was attacked in the shelter
Sunday night sometime, by another dog. This
shelter was so overcrowded, they had to keep
several dogs in each kennel.
Yet I have never seen two more compassionate
people as the two there who were trying to
get dogs to walk out the front door on their
own four feet, by either adoption or by rescue
taking them, as opposed to them leaving out
the back door, and if you don't understand
what that means, that may be a good thing.
Sometimes ignorance can be bliss.
I believe the twins names are Boo and Buzz
but the paperwork is up at the clinic in
OKC where I had to stop last night for emergency
medical care.
The wound from the dog attack was under the
belly, and the shelter really had no money
or resources with which to treat it.
Boo or Buzz, (who knows...they are identical
twins I tell you!) needed emergency medical
attention, and by the time I left the shelter,
every vet in the Duncan, OK area was closed.
This shelter was out in the country...dirt
roads and all.
Gracie, the official SPR GPS system had a
hard time finding her satellites, and kept
announcing this fact to me, over and over.
"Lost Satellite." Lost Satellite."
I heard her inference. She really wanted
to know what the heck we were doing way out
there.
When we finally got our bearings, I drove
like a Bichon Mom out of hell from the shelter,
knowing I knew I had a Bichon with a gut
injury in the back seat, to the most wonderful
vet clinic in OKC that you can imagine.
They are open 24 hours, and they already
knew who we are! They took care of everything
last night, which was a lot, and they gave
us a huge rescue discount to boot.
You have to check out their website. It's
unbelievable. I am still in disbelief that
we ended up at this amazing vet clinic during
this medical emergency.
You can tell by the forums and services they
offer on the website, that they are VERY
rescue friendly, even featuring pictures
of animals in the OKC shelter up for adoption.
I can not tell you what a blessing it was
to find these folks last night.
Neel Veterinary Hospital in OKC
While I was at the shelter, I pulled two
more dogs. One is a three year old male beeshey
poo, and one is a tiny red poodle for Tulsa
Poodle rescue.
I called Caren, who is also the SPR groomer
here in Tulsa, and asked her to take the
poodle and maybe the beeshey poo, because
the shelter was so overcrowded and difficult
decisions were having to be made THAT day.
Caren said yes, so all in all four dogs made
it out, still breathing and walking. Wait..three
were walking and we carried either Boo or
Buzz.
The red poodle was a tiny little bit of a
thing.. she was one large mat with toothpick
feet, who had been abandoned at the shelter
less than 30 minutes before I arrived, in
105 degree weather...just left outside the
shelter. No note..no nuttin'.
If you gross out easily, skip this paragraph.
This little poodle girl had worms and bugs
(ticks, fleas and one I have never seen before)
coming from every orifice of her tiny body.
So we loaded everyone up and I started speeding
toward this OKC clinic that was open 24 hours.
Emergency fees don't start until after 10
P.M. , and I was fortunate enough to arrive
there around 7:30 P.M. Last night.
By this time, ticks were already crawling
on the Glory's ceiling...(Glory, (as in Glory
to God) is the 1998 red Volvo wagon that
knows her way to every commercial kennel
in MO.) and even she was getting the heebee-jeebies.

The Loaves and Fishes Miracle.
Read about the day Glory delivered 28 puppy
mill dogs into the loving arms of waiting
rescue angels.
This has never happened to me on a rescue
but this time, I was bitten by one of the
ticks too. BLAHHHHHHHH!
So, either Boo or Buzz, whoever had been
attacked and had an open gaping wound on
his belly/back leg area, had to have anesthesia,
have the area be shaved, cleaned (the wound
was also infected, given IV antibiotics,
and stapled (they used staples instead of
sutures) through three layers of skin and
guts.
Last night, at the OKC clinic, everyone was
bathed, dipped, given Capstar (This is a
pill that causes fleas to drop off deader
than dead in 30 minutes), and wormed, just
so that I could transport them safely back
to Tulsa, without these things crawling all
over ME thank you very much. They also got
all of their shots, in order for them to
stay at the clinic last night.
They told me they would be finished with
everything at the clinic around 1:30 in the
morning, when I was 18, I may have been ble
to do that. Now, don't even ask.
At 9:30 P.M. I checked into a motel, showered
for what seemed for ever...(is that a bug
or a mole and why is that mole MOVING??)
and then I crashed until 7 this morning.
All together this emergency vet bill comes
up to $497.00. This was including a rescue
discount of $188.00, for which I know we
are all very grateful.
I have to go to pick these babies up this
afternoon, and we do NOT have the funds to
do so. After paying bills last night, we
are 1953.00 in the hole.

We need your help. These Bichons need you
help. We paid over $34,000.00 for vet bills
in July. Now we are into August, the month
from hell for all not for profits. People
are away, people are paying college tuition...August
is just a bad time for rescue and all charities.
If you can help us, (we do NOT want you to
send funds to SPR if it will run you short!
We know some of you are on fixed incomes.
We would like to designate you as our prayer
warriors...and without our prayer warriors,
there would be no Small Paws!) this is how
you can do that.

Hi Robin,
I've created a new section in our CafePress

might appeal to more of our members.
You might want to mention it in the next
newsletter you do - people getting ready
for Summer events might enjoy some new logo

Maybe it will help to raise some funds for

Ok, I have 156 emails yet to answer. I'm

Thank you so much for supporting this magnificant
obsession. Some days I wonder what in the
world I am doing, driving all over the countryside
in 105 degrees, with ticks crawling on Glory's
ceiling and on me.
And then on other days, I know exactly what
I am doing...driving all over the country
side in 105 degrees, with the blood and the
guts and the ticks, and with 6000 of my closest
friends who are riding along... from 20 countries...loving
and supporting this ministry...this thing
we lovingly call... Small Paws Rescue. All
My Love, Robin
P.S. Because we took four dogs from that
shelter, and an adopter came and took one,
that opened up some room so no one was euthanized
yesterday! They told us we have given them
enough room to buy some of the others some
time to be adopted.
There is a shih-tzu there with infected eyes
that needs rescue badly. This is in the Duncan
Humane Society in Duncan Oklahoma. We're
checking to see if Lonestar Shih Tzu Rescue
has anyone from Dallas Tx., who can go for
for that baby.
There are also two corgi mixes, a bloodhound
mix, a golden retriever mix and several pure
Rotties, and other large dogs there. Oops..and
there was one Jack Russell.
Always remember...
No matter what you have done, or where you
have been, God loves you more than anyone
else ever has and more than anyone else ever
will.
