I'm typing this out as fast as I can to let
you know of a serious situation that we have
been working on with the Southwest Regional
Office of the HSUS.
This can not wait until morning. Dear Lord.
Ok. We can do this.
The Northern Texas Humane Society, along
with the HSUS, has asked Small Paws to come
for 10 Bichons that have been rescued from
horrid conditions in a puppy mill, in North
Texas. We've been waiting to hear that the
Humane Society actually had them in their
custody before we came to tell you all about
this. Sometimes these things can go south
on a dime and when they do, it isn't pretty.
They have them in their custody now, and
we are going after these 10 Bichons on Saturday.
Earlier in the week the owner of this "kennel"
had contacted SPR and made arrangements for
us to come to get these 10 Bichons directly
from her.
I had a bad feeling that something wasn't
right, and evidently, it all hit the non-existent
fan, late yesterday.
Thankfully, the Sheriff's office was called
and when they got out there to her place
and saw the horrid conditions, the lack of
food, water, and ventilation (much less air
conditioning) they contacted the Northern
Texas Humane Society, who, working in conjunction
with the Southwest Regional Office of the
HSUS, recovered the dogs in air-conditioned
vans today.
This really was a combined effort from several
of the North Texas animal rescue authorities
and they all are to be commended!
These 70 dogs are now safe at the North Texas
Humane Society, with food and water and air
conditioning and I understand that our Bichons
are VERY THANKFUL to be there. They are tail
waggers and are appreciative of the workers
who are helping them, as are we!
This is the news story about this situation.
We were told that these 70 plus dogs were
kept in metal buildings without windows or
ventilation in sweltering heat, with little
food or water. Many dogs were seen without
any water, in these Texas summer temps.
While the dogs were being rescued last night,
we understood that that some of them had
already died, evidently from the heat.
Thankfully, all of our Bichons survived.
We also understand there was an adult Rottie
tied up out front that weighed only 25-30
pounds. Someone on the site said that the
dogs all had mange and were matted to the
skin.
There reportedly is also a 15 year old blind
chihuahua, that may be, I don't know if I
can even type it. Pregnant.
We need your help to be able to provide emergency
medical care for these ten adult Bichons,
ranging in ages from 4-6 years old, both
males and females. We got every Bichon that
she had.
With the 17 Bichons that we have already
rescued from mills this month, and now adding
these additional 10, vetting is going to
be high. We haven't yet raised everything
we needed for the first 17, and now, ready
of not, here come 10 more!
It takes an average of $400.00 each to vet
and quarantine them, and that's if nothing
else is wrong.
I know one thing. These 10 needed us like
no Bichon has ever needed us before. You
can't imagine how hot it has been. Can you
imagine trying to breathe in a metal building
with no ventilation with 70 plus other dogs
in the same condition? Thank God they are
safe now in the Humane Society as they await
our arrival.
Add to that that this is a Holiday weekend
and I may well be sitting here typing to
myself as Small Pawsers all over the country
are probably out squeezing the last bit of
fun in the sun, celebrating Labor Day from
the summer of 2007.
The good news is that her timing is impeccable.

She and her 1942 Singer sewing machine have
been working overtime to give to you the

Hey Robin,
The fall quilts are here, and I know some
of us are more than ready for some cool weather
to go with them. There are five new ones
to choose from, for the still-low price of
$50 each. The quilts are 100% cotton, with
a flannel lining and batting, and measure
about 32” square. Perfect for naps, or wall
hangings, or even on top of a table. To order,
just visit the SPR website donation page, and make sure you specify which quilt you’d
like in the comments section as you check
out. Please remember to list a second choice,
because these quilts usually sell out fast.
You can see more pictures of the quilts on
my website, and I’ve added a new feature
as well. In the past three years, lots of
Small Pawsers have sent me pictures of their
fluffs enjoying their quilts. I’ve added
them to the website on the “satisfied customers”
pages. If you’d like to see your fluff added
to the group, just send me their name and

We have so many fluffs needing our help right
now. I have a special place in my heart,
and on my couch, for all of these mill dogs
who so desperately need our help. If you’ve
never fostered one, you just don’t know what
you’re missing. These dogs show their gratitude
in tiny steps every day, and it’s the most
rewarding thing I know.
OK, off the soap box and back to the sewing
machine!
Quilt #1: Candy corn Fluff
Nothing says fall like autumn leaves and
Halloween candy, and this quilt has both!
It also features a black and orange homespun
and some polka dots. I had some similar candy
corn fabric last year, and the quilts sold
out in two days. Don’t be left out this year!
Quilt #2: Harvest Fluff
The main print in this quilt is like fall
display, with pumpkins, gourds, and squash!
It is set off by a fall plaid, a rust floral,
and beige dots. Great for a fluff’s nap,
or a beautiful wall hanging for the season.
Quilt #3: Fall patchwork
I found this beautiful fall fabric last year,
and hid it away for this year’s quilts. The
patchwork is to die for, with fall flowers,
berries, and corn in a patchwork pattern.
The other fabrics are green and gold leaves,
and a homespun plaid. It belongs on your
couch or a comfy chair, wherever your fluff
likes to nap.
Quilt #4: Pumpkin patch
The favorite of the Mad Quilter, this quilt
features lots of pumpkins and golds! The
pumpkins are a beautiful shade, and the green
leaf fabric has gold highlights as well.
Order fast if you want this one. I don’t
think it will last long.
Quilt #5: Fall Flowers
This is a great fall patchwork print with
flowers in blue, rust, and beige. A reddish
floral surrounds the fluff, and there is
a beige plaid to go with them. Bailey has
already napped on this quilt, and pronounced
it “comfy.”

for the 2007 Blanketeers raffle quilt. Thank you to everybody who has purchased
them and helped us sell so many in such a
short time.
There are still a few tickets in the hands
of Blanketeers, and these will be available
- first come, first served - at bashes or
picnics we attend this Summer. (we will have
a very few at the NW bash Aug 27 in Arlington,
WA and there should be a few at Tulsa.)
The drawing will be held and the quilt awarded
at the Okie Picnic in October. You need not
be present to win. We'll get it to the winner
if they're not at the picnic.
Printing is limited to 1000 tickets, at $5
each, and we believe they will sell out well
before the drawing at the Oklahoma Picnic,
October 27, 2007.

I want to thank you Robin, and all the Small
Paws Prayer Warriors for your prayers and
email.
Heidi had the enhanced ultrasound yesterday
and the specialist said the baby is within
normal size ranges and looks fine!! Last
weeks regular ultrasound measured the baby's
neck at 7.5 mm, this ultra sound done 3 x
by the doctor, the technician and a trainee
all measured under 5 mm. 6 mm is the dividing
line for Down's and/or Turner's syndrome.

No time frame, they don't know that much
about length of time. I don't hurt its just
hard to breathe. It's a disease of the lungs
got it where I worked in California. Could
use a few prayers from the warriors if you
don't mind. I play your CD's to keep my spirits
up when I have a pity party. Try not to have
them very often, know there is a reason for
every thing.

When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.
