If you missed our last newsletter, here it
is. http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/aug0808.html
It's August. Hot, inching towards the end
of summer, August.
A time when every not for profit in the country
prays for, well, for September.
The two worst months for any charity are
August and January. We survived January.
This August may be another story.
In the first 11 days we have paid $20, 839.45 in vet bills.
If we mail them all, we will be seriously
in the red.
More Bichons than normal for August are dropping
from the skies in ways that are heartbreaking
to say the least.
This was on one of our Owner Surrender Forms.
My heart just broke.
Dog's age:: 16 yrs
Sex of dog:: Female
Has this dog been Spayed or Neutered? : Yes
Can you tell us why this dogs needs to be
rehomed?: I am moving to NY and cannot accommodate
her in a new place. I got her from a shelter
in NY 15 years ago and have been her sole
caretaker all her life.
She follows me like a shadow, but she needs
more time and care than I can give her now.
Has cataracts, is somewhat hard of hearing--or
ignoring me. Early morning arthritis. Runs
around the neighborhood, up and down stairs.
Sweet temperament, barks at doorbell/garage
door opener and once at newcomer then walks
away. Sleeps anywhere I am.>
So it's been a bit difficult around the home
office this week. We're trying to keep our
chins up, but just when we get them up we
get news of another medical emergency.
I know that many of you are away on vacations.
We can tell by the percentage of you who
are opening our newsletters.
I don't know. I guess I'm just having a hard
time . We raised a total of only $120.00
dollars last week and paid out over $10,000.00
in vet bills.
That caused severe redness in our bank account.
Then to top all of that off, Small Pawsers
Sue and Ed Johnson in TN. (SueJohnsonRN@Comcast.Net)
just lost Smudge last night.
They tried so hard. I spoke with Sue a minimum
of four times a day since Sunday, getting
updates on his condition after he was discovered
almost dead with a huge abdominal mass, late
Saturday night.
They removed it surgically, but he just never
recovered.
I remember back when Small Paws first rescued
Smudge from a shelter.

See the smudge on his little head?
Click on his picture to see a slide show
of when we first rescued him.
It never gets any easier watching someone
you love, lose someone they love. We all
can relate to that feeling.
We just want them to be with us forever.
There's nothing more precious than these
Bichons that we love, so! There's just not!
I know everyone loves their breed. I've had
other breeds. I HAVE other breeds.
But, oh man, tears, there is something extra
special about a Bichon and the way they just
love you.
They love you when you are up. They love
you when you are down.
They can tell if you're sick or not feeling
well. They can tell if the slightest thing
is wrong.
They love you will all of their heart and
all of their soul, even if you're planning
to leave them with a stranger at age 16 because
you want to move to NYC.
I pray that Dale and I have the opportunity
and the HONOR of still having our precious,
precious Bichons, Spunky Monkey and Chipper
the Tall, when they are 16 years old, from
my mouth to God's ears.
Ok, I need to buckle up here and tell you
what's happened, and hope that there is someone
out there, somewhere, who can help Bella
and JayJay.

First, one of our many foster dogs, Jay Jay
Small Paws, had an accident and he's injured
and he is in pain. He's being fostered in
San Jose, California with Brenda and Jim
Swiney. See his back right leg being held
up in the air? That's the one he tore his
ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) on.
This is from Rebecca Roberts our Northern
California Team Leader.
Hi Robin,
Brenda Swiney just called and and reports
that Jay Jay jumped down from her deck yesterday
and tore his ACL. Remember this is San Jose
and the vet estimate for the repair is $4,000.00.
The vet drew lap work to see if his renal
function is ok for anti-inflammatory. Please
advise me on what you want us to do.>
Now do not worry. We are NOT paying $4000.00
for an ACL repair. That is about 4 times
what we usually pay. San Jose or no San Jose.
Rebecca and another SPR volunteer, Bate Zakrzewski,
found another Board Certified Surgeon near
Sacramento, who will do the ACL surgery for
us for $1100.00.
That's more like it.
This is more about the surgery which, unfortunately,
we have done many times in the past 10 years.
(Anterior Cruciate Ligament) (ACL) Repair
In The Dog

"Peoples, I didn't mean to do it. It
was an a'ssidental hurtin' of myself.
Ouch. I can't use my leg. Please help me?
Even in August?"
Then, Jan Crowl, the Team Leader for Nevada
wrote this to us last night.
It just gets better and better doesn't it?
I'm sorry you guys. You know I'm not usually
down like this. I just don't know what to
do if too many of you are away and we are
in the red as it is, and now we have two
Bichons in pain. I know He knows what He's
doing. I just wish He'd tell me!
Wait. He just did. He told me to tell you.
Ok. I can do this. Type Robin. Shut up and
type.

Look into her eyes. Not only did she lose
her home and her parents, and everything
that she knew and loved, she is carrying
ten pounds of potatoes in a five pound sack.
That's sort of the best way to describe what
a bladder stone feels like if you haven't
had the joy of experiencing it yourselves.
(Men. Think "giving birth" without
the equipment needed to do so. Yup. You got
it. That's a good analogy if I do say so
myself.)
Robin,
I received a phone call this afternoon regarding
an abandoned Bichon. Owners divorced, wife
moved to an apartment, no dogs allowed, husband
never liked the dog and wouldn't take her.
Gave her to elder neighbors who couldn't
keep her, they took her to the dog park and
asked if this couple would like her. They
took her and realized very quickly that something
was wrong. Took her to the vet and found
out it was bladder stones and they do not
have the funds to take of her. Said they
called the shelters and they are not accepting
dogs as they are overcrowded. If animal control
picked her up, and she has health issues
she would be put down. So they called me.
They met me at the vet hospital and I accepted
her.
She is there now being boarded, at no cost.
They can do the surgery if we can authorize.
They are giving us a really generous discount,
40%. The final charge will be between $900-$1000.
This will included fecal check, heartworm
and updating her on all her shots, as well
as today's visit, x-ray and bladder surgery,
with teeth cleaning.

I have attached pictures I took of her, as
well as a pictures of the x-ray showing the
bladder stones.
She is a very sweet little girl, five years
old and has been spayed. I have a foster
home waiting, Sandy and Manny Tortora.
Please let me know if I can tell them to
proceed.
Jan>
This is a fabulous price and a fabulous discount.
Unfortunately, due to it being AUGUST, we
can't authorize this surgery unless we raise
funds to do so.
It's been a tough week so far. Those of you
who have been up e-mailing me about this
or that know I've been working deep into
the early morning hours the past few nights.
This is because we have so many in rescue
right now.
But I'm here. I'm here to issue matching
challenges and Stephanie Hunter is here to
take your credit card donations if there
is anyone at all out there who can help either
Bella or Jay Jay.
If you have made a past donation using your
credit card, you may e-mail Stephanie Hunter,
at SPRfluff@aol.com and let her know the amount of your donation
to help these Bichons.
You may also call your credit card donation
in to Stephanie Hunter at her cell phone
number which is 508-801-3106.
She is on Eastern Standard Time! (Please
leave a message and she will return your
call if she is not available!)
Dear God. Ok. I'm typing like You told me.
Please let someone be touched to help these
two precious Bichons, who through no fault
of their own are in pain, and need our help,
as soon as possible.
This is how you can help.

The Small Paws Rescue Blanketeers are proud and happy to announce the
completion of the third annual raffle quilt
to benefit SPR.
These are some of the same generous souls
who send "love" blankies to the
adopted fluffs.
This beautiful effort is a generous queen
size quilt, it measures 107" x 107",
and has matching shams.
We named it on behalf of the many lucky Bichons
given a second chance at life in the ten
years of Small Paws Rescue efforts,
many of whom live in our own homes and are
part of our families.
Our raffle quilts are a collaborative effort,
with blocks pieced by Blanketeers across
the country,
then assembled in a weekend "Quiltfest"
at the home of a Midwest member.
Sue Halley, Helen Schultz, Linda Gonzales
and Diane Piskur put in a long weekend piecing
and adding the borders.
Quilting was done by Diane, a Longarm quilter,
in a random stippled design.

Then Diane also made the shams from some
of the border fabric, and displayed it
with the approval of her fluffs, Sparky and
SPR Lily.
(Brass bed and fluffs not included)
We will be offering tickets at $5 each again
this year,
with a limit of 1500 offered for sale!
The drawing will be held and quilt awarded
at the
10th Annual Okie Picnic in Tulsa, Oklahoma

"Trouble In Paradise"
The second Book in the Cassie Grimes Mystery
Series with a special acknowledgement to
Small Paws Rescue! In the book, under "Author's
Notes & Acknowledgements", this
paragraph appears:
A special thanks to Small Paws Rescue for their tireless devotion to rescuing Bichons from the most unspeakable circumstances. Robin Pressnall and her army of foster parents, volunteers and supporters are amazingly generous with their time and money on behalf of some of the most loving and trusting creatures on earth. They are the embodiment of the idea of "walking the walk."
Her business is in a lull, her husband’s
lost his job and her best friend is so depressed
she’s talking about suicide. Cassie Grimes
is sure that things can only get better as
she loads her dogs in the car and heads for
Florida to work things out.
Fat chance. Nothing’s ever that simple for
this dog-loving woman.Shortly after arriving
at the condo she’ll soon be forced to sell
in the name of solvency, her wealthy best
friend is arrested for the disappearance
of her much older husband.
What’s a woman to do? Jump into the middle of things, naturally. With the help of her Bichons, Maggie and A.J., her disgruntled hubby and a couple of gun-toting geriatric party girls, Cassie can’t resist being an amateur detective. She’s not making any friends in the local police department because she keeps turning up in the middle of crime scenes. While trying to help her trophy-wife friend, Cassie uncovers a web of fraud, murder and extortion that have the bad guys trying to beat her up or blow her up or just plain shoot her. It gets so bad that Gene even suggests she hire her former boyfriend as extra security. Yikes.
What Cassie goes through in the name of friendship will keep you on the edge of your seat. That is, of course, if you don’t fall off it while laughing out loud. Once again, Pearson proves that everyday life can be not only exciting, but hilarious.
Of course, they are signed from Maggie and
A.J. to the buyer's pooch, so please put
your fluff's name(s) in the Comments section
of the order form!

Hi Robin,
I've created a new section in our CafePress

You might want to mention it in the next

Then, if all of that isn't enough we need
to find a foster home for a bonded pair of
under one year old Bichon pups presently
located in North Carolina. This is urgent.
We will probably have to fly them to someone
but we also have an offer of ground transport
if it isn't cross country.
We have them in a foster home where there
is not room for them and they really MUST
must be moved.
We just can't afford one more boarding bill,
so we need a miracle foster home to fall
from the sky. ((Robin looks up.))
Oh. One more thing. THEY ARE BOTH SORT OF
CRIPPLED AND CAN'T BE HELPED SURGICALLY.
They have their legs on backwards and no
I am not kidding.
Wanna SEE??

See there. I told ya. Backwards legs. A fine
specimen of why not to breed when you don't
have a clue as to what you are doing.
Their family tree probably doesn't fork,
if you get my drift.
(I meant Fred and Lucy but now that you
mention it, maybe the "breeder"
too.)
This is from our Team Leader to the Carolina's,
Kathryn Smith, who has them now but must
have some relief. She really doesn't have
a place for them!

PLEASE Somebody!! offer to take these
two - I can transport a good ways --
They are fully vetted, fully ambulatory (
admittedly a bit wonky, but nothing slows
them down! ); If you want to see a video
I have one of MATTEO that looks just like
Lucy - 'cept he's a boy and she's not :)
If you didn't really look you couldn't tell
much was wrong with Fred; he just has a 'peg
leg' walk like 'Chester'; it's Lucy that
is like Matteo; I have her x-rays - amazing
that she can navigate at all!
They are not lion hunters, nor do they eat
kitties. If you have a cat, that's ok. These
guys are feline safe.
These are adorable, TINY, little fluffs -
both are less than 12#'s, and absolutely
precious. Lucy's not sure what to
think of my husband, but she'll get over
it -- he's BIG, has a beard, etc., doesn't
look much like the 'average Joe';
Both are cuddlers when you hold them, they're
'soft' when you pick them up; and their coats
are to die for!!
they aren't BALD anymore!! Dixie has done
a beautiful job on them - not a mat or tangle
anywhere and snow white - you'd never know
they were in 'Red Clay' country!
I picked them up from Dixie at noon Sunday
- she really needs our help right now - her
husband Stan has had a very dicey Prostate
biopsy, and they're both scared to death;
on top of that - her daughter's wedding is
looming in the near future and she has contractors,
landscapers, painters, etc., redoing the
house and garden. They can't possibly postpone
the wedding, and Dixie is a very strong woman
- both in her faith and in her personal life
-- but she and Stan could certainly use our
prayers right now.

Fred, who soon may be named "Chester".

Lucy, who soon may be named "Miss Kitty."
Back to Fred and Lucy ( I'll probably change
their names - just don't seem to quite 'fit'
right ), but no matter, you all are missing
out on two very very special fluffs; they're
probably a little less than a year old, well
along with their house training, but have
had free run of Dixie's large paddock, so
'leash work' is going to be a new venture
for them. They both can navigate stairs,
- and in fact Stan said that "Fred"
walks like "CHESTER" - so I may
call him Chester, and call her Miss Kitty
-- but they won't care as long as I call
them in time for dinner :).
They've been running with Dixie's personal
dogs - Bichons and Lakeland Terriers, so
we know they're well acclimated to other
dogs; also lots of 'coming and going' in
that household so they're very social;
Fred doesn't seem to be particularly attached
to Lucy; but she's very attached to him;
she's not as outgoing and needs more reassurance
than he does.
I've included some new pics; they really
are 'white' - but the terracotta floor reflects
and gives them a 'not white' look; I'll try
to get some outdoors - once it cools off
enough to venture out! we're 'dyin' here!
as my daddy used to say -- " The humidity
is high enough to drown a cow!." Must
be a really tall cow!! never did really understand
that! - he also said that the 'Wind was strong
enough to blow the hair off an onion."
-- must be -- onions don't have hair :)!
Seriously, hot weather is dangerous for us
and for our pets - be safe, stay in and stay
cool; if you walk your dogs, do it very very
early in the morning, or wait until at least
after 9 or 10 p.m. at night - we are 5+ feet
off the pavement/ground and don't feel the
radiating heat - our dogs are 10 INCHES!
off the ground and the earth / pavement holds
a ton of heat to release long after the sun
goes down. Pee Pee pads in the laundry room,
or just a quick 'in/out' for potty breaks
if you can't walk that late at night. Be
safe, be careful and stay cool.
Just had to share these pics - sorry if there
are too many - but how can you have too many
pics of just precious babies an if you're
wondering if they're 'cat' proof -- well
sort of kitten tested; actually they seemed
rather worried about her; I think they'd
be fine with kittens and cats once they got
used to them.
Best, stay cool, and I can make a transport
run the weekend of the 16th, or perhaps the
weekend of the 23rd, depending on where.
K- just in love w/ being a SPR'r and so proud

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
Godspeed Humphrey Sisco. Godspeed.
